The Last of Us concept shots depict a game of sneaky survivalism
49
We don't know much about The Last of Us just yet, but the first several concept shots offer a sneak peek into what we can expect to learn in the coming months. Protagonist duo Joel and Ellie sneak their way past a mean-looking couple of gentlemen in a wrecked 7-11, hang out with deer on their way out of what looks to be San Francisco, and stop to rest by a fire while cracking jokes, all the while escaping from whatever those humanoid ... things were in the trailer.
The latest line from Naughty Dog on The Last of Us puts the duo in a world where the US population was "decimated by a modern plague," leaving only the most hardened survivors behind while nature reclaims man's crumbling structures. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is unclear, though Joel is only referred to as a "ruthless survivor" while Ellie is depicted as "a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years." The gameplay repercussions of those characterizations seem to put Joel in the aggressor role while Ellie handles strategy and puzzles -- we're still not sure how that will play out in terms of player control, unfortunately. Single-player with an NPC partner? Switching off between the two? Co-op? We'll have to wait and see.
And though we're not sure why the two are doing so, they'll be trekking "across what remains of the United States" throughout The Last of Us. Here's hoping they find a good shower somewhere in the process! Head over to OPM for all the (rather gorgeous) concept shots.

While youre probably right, They would probably do something new with an FPS, Thats not who they are. They are best off sticking to what they do now, Because its brilliant.

Cross country treks through the US will always be a cool thing to do, whether it's a time of plenty or the apocalypse! I bet you they're trying to find highway 66.

Reminds me of "I am Legend"
I can't wait for this game though Dead Island was a total let down that I wish I never paid $60 for. I also comes out with Co-op too.

Agree that it looks like I am Legend but I hope the story has more in line with The Road, grimy and hopeless for the win.

I hope the story is nothing like The Road (the movie at least; never read the book). That story bored me to tears. Whole lot of nothing happening.

@jadee You are probably right but what if ND figured out how to do it. If any studio can. It is them.

I like the idea of a linear road trip as opposed to an open world.
Maybe multiple routes across the country (Northern, Central and Southern) each with their own unique story arc, environments and enemies.

That would be an incredible undertaking if they pulled the latter idea off...a linear game that has all the appearances being non-linear.

That's what I always think, although it seems like they go out of their way to avoid mentioning it. Smart, sassy teenage girl and rough, strong older man travel across areas reclaimed by nature. Guy beats stuff up, girl solves puzzles. I'm still waiting for the part of this that supposed to be new.

Calm down. Innovation is less common than you think. I don't care how "new" a game is, as long as it is fun.

Enslaved was quite good, for the first half of the game. The second half seemed to be made in a hurry, or perhaps the budget was running out.

The creative director, Neil Druckmann, gave some pretty interesting information in a review with USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/story/2011-12-12/last-of-us-naughty-dog/51851164/1
"'Video game' is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It's an experience."
--exactly how I've felt about Uncharted also, for the most part.
On topic of the screen shots, I have a lot of faith in this game. I'm not a huge fan of the zombie genre, but this looks more like a post-apocalyptic story as a large element. Glad to see they went a greener route than the typical gray, and no doubt it will have an engaging story.

Imagine Skyrim openness but no clear path to where you are going, you just have a compass and you go "that way". Each time you played the game it would be a little, or a lot different depending on which paths (roads/highways/cities) you took.
Branching story with characters you meet or don't meet. It would be amazing!

Lies. I've played Fallout and the graphics were decent for such an open world game, but never really much more than that.
In Skyrim I sometimes find myself stopping my quests just to marvel at the landscape. It's probably the most beautiful looking game I've played.

I hope its a slow paced survival game and not a zombie horde game like L4D.
My guess is its going to be modeled after Walking Dead.

I guess I'm spoiled on Skyrim, nut I'm hoping that I will be able to hunt those deer for their meat and hide. I mean, a real survival simulation would have you thinking about basic needs like food and shelter. I know most game characters don't need to sleep or use the bathroom, but this game looks like it could be pushing new boundaries.
Btw, I can't imagine these two trekking across the country saving each other's lives, and not have some romantic situations, hm, arise. ;)
Not that this would really be a valid gameplay option, but it just gets in my head. The insinuation of an adult male "surviving" with a teenage girl...I can just see the FoxNews flamers drooling over this one.

I got the sense of the older gentleman being a father figure for the girl in the trailer, so I would expect romantic situations to arise in this game approximately never.
