As promised, Rockstar's mobile version of its seminal open-world crime sim, Grand Theft Auto 3: 10 Year Anniversary Edition, has arrived on iOS and select Android platforms. The game will run you $5, a price point low enough to console you when the torment of virtual buttons becomes too painful.

I can't see myself happy using the touch controls. I might give it a chance.

It actually works very well. I got it this morning, and I am impressed. Plus, it looks very nice. I have a qHD screen, and it really pops with crispness.

@ItsameMatt03 Yeah, gonna go ahead and co-sign on this. I downloaded it for my HTC Inspire 4G and it works a lot better than I thought it would. Hasn't crashed yet...maybe some minor slow down. but in the games defense I did have a lot of shit running and was receiving a text at the moment...

If you look at the reviews, it looks like Rockstar didn't bother to limit the Android Market listing to compatible phones. I would definitely advise against getting it if your phone isn't explicitly supported unless you find evidence that someone else got it working first, as the post-purchase download will take longer than the fifteen minutes return period.

@Rollins Androids have a return period? I did not know that, that's kind of awesome.

If you got a tablet, I'd use a USB controller. I'm never gonna bother with virtual buttons.

They should port ChinaTown Wars for those of us who don't have a strong phones can play some GTA. I recall ChinaTown Wars graphics on the DS being birds-eye so the 3d models and whatnot don't have to be dazzling.
Also customizable controls. (support for Bluetooth controllers)
Add em, Rockstar.

I found it glitchy. On my 4S, I was never able to even complete the first mission. The driving was delayed / inputs would buffer up, and then get cleared all at once, creating an amusing, but awful combination of steer + gas + brake all in rapid succession. Steering was useless. It might be a product of me running 5.1, but I still found it unplayable.
Then on my iPad 1, it wouldn't load game.. it would just crash to springboard immediately. That is on 5.0.1.
I'm impressed by the fact it even exists, but I want it to be playable. :(

@Kaemon I've tried everything. I've rebooted my phone, closed all applications. It just runs like a dog. Which is a shame... I was looking forward to it (and still am really.. I just need it fixed). I also was hoping for some Bluetooth controller compatibility.. bu.. oh well :P

@Gu3st How many apps are enabled for notifications on your phone? I found more apps meant more memory and bandwidth usage.
I've also seen some people talking about the extreme step of turning Airplane Mode on with the original iPad. I'm not home so I can't test that.

I'm pretty disappointed they haven't made this rerelease for PSN/XBLA/future Vita download. I tried to play the iPhone version of Chinatown Wars and just ended up buying it on my PSP and playing it that way. I've all but given up on touch games, they don't hold my interest.

I can understand why they made this version - money/might as well. What I can't understand is why anyone would buy it. Playing GTAIII even with a gamepad is a painful experience these days when compared to GTAIV, and GTAIV is made to feel painful by... any other 3rd person game in the world.
But touch only?! Do you really hate your money so much you throw it away on everythign you've heard of before just to 'give it a shot'? Have some sense!

Bought it last night. Just really started playing it on my 3GS. And really, for a game like this, running on MY OLD IPHONE, it's a solid port. Is it perfect? Goodness, no. But just about everything is in place, the music, the dialogue and the fun. And at $5, you REALLY can't complain.
Posted: Dec 15th 2011 2:26PM StormEagle said
Something's wrong with your phone then dude. (Update it?) I'm running it on my 3Gs and I'm 4 missions in (It's crashed once tying to save.). Yeah it's clunky, but what did you REALLY expect from a game this scope running on a phone?

Crashes on startup on iPad 1, straight to springboard.... fail :(

I have no issues with it running on my iPhone 4S here. The textures look fantastic, far better than I remember on either the PS2 or PC versions. The polygon count seems really low, though, people are basically LEGO figures.
I'm surprised that people are having performance issues - I've seen far better looking games running well. Batman: Arkham City Lockdown and Infinity Blade II being the most recent examples.

Just another example of people being over eager and under informed, so they're willing to pay to beta test a product for a developer already fat with cash.
However, kudos to Rockstar for being perhaps the first AAA developer to attempt to push this kind of depth to a mobile platform. Gives me hope for the future.

Just went to check this out, it says it's available for my epic 4g so I bought it, but a neater surprise is my touch pad running cyanogen mod shows up now in the market, maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake, but, SWEET TOUCHPAD WITH GTA. I wonder how it'll run...

Have it on my 4S and IPad 2 works perfectly on both. Running iOS 5.0.1 I love it the controls work well and are customizable so that helps! Only thing I wish is gps way points I think I've grown accustom to them lately. Trying to find the little blip on the map is way harder now that we have turn by turn in all open world games now. Still I would give it a 10/10 because it is a perfect port!
