When Chris Covell went to a "local library" recently -- local for him being "in Japan" -- he didn't grab just any book. Instead, he grabbed a picture book made for children named "The Stars of Famicom Games: How Video Games Are Made," wherein legendary Japanese developers like Shigeru Miyamoto, Koji Kondo, and Takashi Tezuka are caught in revealing images, behind the scenes of Super Mario Bros. 3's development.
Beyond all the devs looking many, many years younger (the images were taken in summer 1989), the photos depict an all-star development team crafting one of the most beloved gaming experiences of all time. If your morning has been sadly devoid of EPROMs and late '80s Japanese haircuts, this conveniently translated feature is perfect for you.

Kind of blows my mind to see an adorable Miyamoto smoking a cigarette in a kids book.

If not wanting to get cancer makes you a pansy, then sure, I'm a pansy.

I'm pretty sure you can still find those in some novelty stores, but not in your local 7-11 anymore. I remember the candy ones that had a little hollow tube, when you puffed on them a "smoke" cloud of finely powdered sugar would puff out.
@UhMilhouse
Worse than cancer is how smoking makes you feel. After about 15 years of smoking, a short jog up a flight of steps would make me feel like I was going to have a coronary.

He looks adorable.
But in all seriousness, I'm sure that by then the man and the rest of the team knew that they were changing lives just about about every day, when a thoughtful parent, or really any kind of consumer, bought their games and drove it home.
These guys helped construct a wonderful childhood, as well as a happy, imaginative gaming life later on.

This made me well up a little. Also I found this comical.
"For example, he got the name "Koopa" from once when he was hungry (a Korean dish's name); and a mushroom he drew resembled more of a chestnut, so he named it "Kuribo" ("Goomba" in the west.) Even the name "Mario" and the idea for his moustache were borrowed from a man living in the same apartment as a Nintendo employee in the United States."
