Gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised, I was worried this game was gonna suck.

Looking forward to the review :)

"But part of Team Fortress 2's class based magic is the easily identifiable silhouettes, which let you know what you're dealing with. It's an important aspect of this kind of shooter, that expectation."

I'd say that surprise and uncertainty is more important, and challenging, than rote game expectations. If the TF2 mechanism is so important, there's a game you can play with exactly that kind of mechanism; it's called Team Fortress 2. Really, it's interesting how gamers clamor for fresh new games, with fresh new game play, and all they really seem to want up a re-skin of a game that is already out.

*sigh*

This is why we can't have nice things.

@Kresh You know, according to your logic, there are countless video games you could dismiss for sharing mechanics.

@Kresh There are countless games you could dismiss for sharing mechanics. Games in similar genres are influenced by others, and as result will play similarily, but by no means does that mean a game cant stand on its own.

@SomeRandomJrk
when games ARE in similar genres, they create expectations that they fail to meet, whether they intended to make those expectations or not, or even whether they set out to "beat" the other or not. the game's similarity to TF2 means that it can fail or succeed based on how much it does or doesn't resemble it, and in what ways.

besides that, I think the original post was more complaining that for all of the complaints of stagnancy, gamers really do want more of the same: hence the complaints that it's not enough like TF2.

I tried to get into the beta but I didn't have enough room left on my hard drive. So that's the end of that. Oh well.... Yes, I could buy another hard drive or move some save files that I'm not using to a USB key, but that would require time and effort. Will definitely attempt a demo at a later date.

@8bitartist - All I was attempting to do was save you guys time. I know if I posted that I didn't have enough HD space, someone would reply "Buy a new hard drive dude!" and "Move some files to a USB key dude!" I was actually just posting to stave off the inevitable, is all.

I've been playing the beta, and it's definitely a good game. The only real complaint I have is that the maps seem a bit too small (and there's no real map variety, but that's because the beta only includes two of them so I am withholding judgement on that until release - the ones that are there are good other than being small).

As far as telling what someone can do by looking at them, well, you can! It just takes a bit longer to figure everything out than in TF2. Most gadgets have a distinct effect on the player model - body armor is visible on your chest, you can see a glider strapped to your back, you visibly wear spring-boots, roller skates, and so on and so forth. And once you get out of the first 10 or so levels, where everyone will look the same for lack of costume slots/coins for costume parts, the high level of customization typically means that you can recognize players between conflicts, so even the abilities that you can't see right off will be obvious once you've seen the player use them once.

I can say this much, I certainly agree that the look and feel of the game is really tight. If they push this trend a bit more it can be a great downloadable shooter. I just hope people buy into it.

I know this is completely off this topic but does anyone think that Star Wars The Old Republic is just an MMO remake of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic?

This game has been surprisingly great so far. My major problem is the weapon balance. There's two shotguns and only one is strong enough to be viable; the other one is a peashooter. Same with the submachine guns. There seems to be one weapon in each category that's better than the rest.

I'm just hoping that'll be fixed in the final version, because the game's tons of fun besides that.

I hate most multiplayer FPSs exactly because the characters' silhouette look so samey. It's even worst in games like MAG, where even the difference in uniform between the teams are so small and friendly fire is enabled. That's why TF2 is my favourite game and anything that do not offer this kind of class and team differentiation will not cut it to me. This game looks awesome, but I hope they make the difference between classes and teams clear, so I can enjoy it.

I don't know about classes, but you know there are only two teams right? Batmen and Jokerz? Good luck telling those apart.

"The Batman references, the Joker allusions..."

Do you mean the visual aesthetic explicitly based around the iconic design of both characters? Not to mention how both words effectively mean the same (inaccurate) thing in context. This is incredibly lazy writing. Joystiq editorial has really gone downhill.

I am a huge batman fan. Making a shooter based on a hero who hates guns is an odd concept.

i kinda wish that this was a third person shooter, with all the customisations that could be made, you should be able see your own character in-game
