Joystiq, what about this story?..

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-new-dash-borks-video-playback

You can't keep ignoring MS denial about this disturbing issue.

Most gamers would thank you. :-)

@southernpredator +1 I'm surprised that Kotaku has been the only one to post about this.

Because it isn't. There are few displays capable of displaying the "missing" RGB information as it is not present in the TV broadcast standards anyway.

@Ordeith He's right that you don't understand the issue. My display is calibrated with a colorimeter to very strict specs. The issue isn't "displaying the "missing" RGB information as it is not present in the TV broadcast standards anyway." That's EXACTLY our point! Video is encoded for digital 16-235. However, with the new dashboard, even if the dashboard itself is properly displaying at those levels, when you play a video, it doesn't play at the same levels (as the histograms in Digital Foundry's tests clearly show). So even if your display is calibrated so 16 = black like it should for broadcast standards, a black level test pattern played on the 360 will now show the information below 16 because it is altering the video levels (whereas it didn't with the NXE dashboard). It should NOT be showing that information, and shouldn't be showing video at a different level from the dashboard when set to Standard reference level in the system settings. Worse, if you set it to Intermediate or Extended, it throws away info above 16 and truncates white levels, making video look even worse. And because the video levels are now different than the dashboard/games with no consistency, you can't even adjust your TV around it.

Any other Canadians find any of these apps worth it? RoD is already a terribly poor and content devoid service in most iterations and the other apps are, again, so devoid of content that there's really zero reason to use them. I thought the Canadian version of Netflix was poor, but all of the new dash stuff is a pretty big waste of space.

@TehPeanut - The Canadian Netflix has gotten much better in the past four months or so.

The rest of the apps (outside of YouTube) I would agree with you on, except for the UFC app, which is excellent if you're a fan of the sport.

The youtube app seems to have some videos not showing on it as well.

I tried searching for a couple songs on the links which turned up on youtube.com didn't all turn up in the youtube app.

It could just be how it orders them though.

you know, same thing happens with the YouTube app on my phone. it doesn't turn up quite as many videos as doing a search on the full site with my phone.

Microsoft has treated the beta testers for the new Dashboard well. I've gotten the past two UFC PPV events in HD for Free. That's huge to a person like me. I buy just about one. The stream was flawless. Not a single issue to speak of.

The UFC and HBOGo apps are my only concern. I enjoy HBOGo on my iPad, but would much rather have the full experience on my HDTV. And it will be nice to be able to pay for my UFC events upfront. Comcast is shady with their billing when it comes to such things. I'm al ost certain I've paid for the same event twice before. And, Comcast does not yet have HD PPV in my area. So it's a double win for me.

Curious to see what the Xfinity app brings as well.

The Syfy app is pretty useless as far as I can tell. Nothing but movie and TV show clips and a few webisodes.

YouTube app is kinda stripped down. No real homepage where you can view new videos for you subscriptions.

Hate the new Netflix app. Especially since you can't see the year a movie or show was released u til you play it. Guess I will use this app on my PS3 from now on. I went from feeling the 360's Netflix app was vastly superior to now thinking the PS3 has the better app.

Meant to type that regarding UFC PPV. Thanks for the ability to edit my post Joystiq! Guess I should become a better proof-reader.

I agree the new Netflix for 360 is God awful...I mean the auto play crap...can not restart the episode from the beginning or skip chapters.

The UI is horrible and very slow as well. I wish they would have at least kept it the old way but since everything is Kinect mandatory now then we're screwed.

Yeah, I don't watch UFC, but for the preview I tried out that app, and I must agree, it is very well built. Seems like it could be very useful for someone like who actually likes to watch the sport.

I agree with the SyFy comment as well. I mean, really? What the heck is the point of that thing?

I personally wish they had more apps that didn't require a separate subscription from Gold (I don't have Netflix or Hulu Plus), but it's certainly not surprising that this is the case.

I agree with you very much on the netflix app for the 360. I use netflix pretty much everyday so my son can watch shows like shaun the sheep and sesame street but i really hate that they removed feature like "restart episode" or episode selection without having to actually load up the show first. Netflix and Xbox really need to fix this. ASAP

Heads up, YouTube on console is restricted just like YouTube for mobile phones are. Could be for legal reasons who knows, but don't expect alot of content (aka music) to show up like its Computer counterpart

I just hope the "UFC 141 sold out" thing only applies to the "free" streams that were given out earlier today. If it's actually sold out on xbox live come fight time, that's going to suck.

I was hoping this would replace my Roku box for that purpose....but if I have to worry about an online stream "selling out"....it won't be worth the hassle.

While it's nice of Microsoft to partner with so many providers (in some countries at least) they really should have exerted more pressure on them to up their picture quality. I suspect most of them still expect people to watch their on demand catch up services in a tiny video window inside Internet Explorer 6 on 10 year old laptop with a 10" screen. In other words - the picture quality is absolutely pathetic.

On a big HDTV their very sub SD level streams are just unwatchable. (I'm talking specifically about 4OD and Demand 5 here). Microsoft has great video streaming tech in Zune, which will automatically choose the best stream depending on the user's connection, and it goes up to 10mbit 1080p. Every provider on Xbox Live should be forced to use it.

Considering Channel 4 and Channel 5 don't record anything in 1080p and some shows are still recorded in SD, that's not going to happen.
