Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is notorious for his ability to say very little with a whole lot of words, but he doesn't bother mincing words when it comes to his feelings on social gaming giant Zynga. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, Fils-Aime answers a question regarding his thoughts on Zynga's recent IPO by saying, "What's the share price? It will be interesting when it breaks below $9." In case it isn't clear, that's the executive way of saying, "Your IPO ain't shit."
He continues by inferring that Zynga's creating the same titles over and over, presumably referring to the company's many "Ville" games, though he seems more than okay with his own company doing as much with its recent release of the seventh Mario Kart title.
As for the free-to-play business model, however, Fils-Aime is less pessimistic. While he says, "I would argue Facebook is a platform ... I wouldn't expect to see our franchises on other platforms [that aren't owned by Nintendo]," he admits that Nintendo will "certainly" be experimenting with "other forms of monetization." When we'll see that pricing experimentation remains to be seen, however, as Fils-Aime only reveals vaguely that said price "experimentation" is currently taking place across Nintendo's various internal studios.

Nine 'Ville games since 2009...
..versus seven console Mario Kart games since 1992.
Yep, legitimate criticism right there.

Not only that but the series has evolved quite abit over the years and Nintendo has nearly perfected the formula now.
The simple fact that each release for Mario Kart grows the franchise further while Zygna continues to see their numbers slip is proof of who delivers a quality product and who doesn't.

To add to that sarcasm...
All the ville games are literally the same game except it's just reskinned. This is not the reskinning of say... the Madden franchise, even though as gamers, we consider that basically reskinned. Madden at least changes player stats which alters the game play very very VERY slightly. All ville games are literally reskins where you can actually see every item corresponding to an item in each game and functioning exactly the same.

Not to mention that there's actually a demand for Mario titles, including Mario Kart. People would be pissed if they didn't make more. Plus, Nintendo only does one per console, so even though Mario Kart 7 is available, it is the only one on 3DS (minus Super Circuit for ambassadors)

It's ashame Joystiq writers like Ben Gilbert make comments like this - it's either he has a hate-on for Nintendo, or he's just ignorant.
His first comment in this piece doesn't make sense either - pointing out that Reggie usually says a lot by saying a little, except in this case. Then in the same paragraph, (since apparently his comments aren't obvious to everyone else, even though, they are), Ben decides to just reiterate Reggie's comments in his own words - and personally, I don't get the impression that's what Reggie "meant" either...
This is a great story (about Reggie commenting on Zynga, etc), just poorly written. Another case of Joystiq trying to be funny or clever when they should focus more on facts.

Double Ugh, indeed - but I would say if Nintendo made a social Facebook game, I probably would be inclined to give it a go.
Nintendo would definitely come up with something far better than Zynga could ever dream (and then Zynga would just copy and paste).
Best bet - An "Animal Crossing" game on Facebook, developed by Nintendo, that is compatible in some ways to the next Animal Crossing game. You could do some of your "chores" and such on Facebook (while at work, of course) - then when you get home and play on the Wii U - you can reap the benefits (I say "Wii U" as an assumption - and personally would prefer a console version over a handheld version in the future...)

The thing is that Zynga just isn't a game company.
They don't care at all about giving the player a good experience, instead they're obsessed with what psychological tricks they could pull this time to gouge out another buck from your hard-earned money.
Too bad you can't buy respect.

You just described half the games this generation, look at the XP/carrot on a stick system in Call of Duty,MMOs, achievements, DLC, preorder DLC, DLC achievements.
Animal Crossing is a few steps away from a Zynga game, AC would make a perfect Facebook game.

@Gmail Calendar Rep IT's sad, but you are right there.
I hate the new trend of carrot on a stick games.
I've literally seen people saying that the game doesn't "motivate them" enough to keep playing. As in, there's no prestige mode for game X! OMG OMG OMG!
I'm wondering if they ever played games to actually have fun, instead of obsessing over an arbitrary number.

I agree completely (which is odd, considering your ignorant comments earlier on this post).
Animal Crossing would make a great Facebook game. Especially if it's compatible with the next console version. Do some chores and stuff on Facebook (while at work, of course), then reap the benefits when you get home. Get your friends and family in the mix so they can help you out, even if they don't own the console version. It would be a great cross-platform experience that might boost Animal Crossing's popularity in North America (encourage Facebook users to purchase a Nintendo console and Animal Crossing).

Nintendo has no right to say S*** about another company creating the same game over and over.
May I present the Wii, and all 15 million games, which are really just the same 10 games with a couple of changed graphics now and then.
It's called shovelware or 'me, too' kind of of development, and Nintendo's lack of caring on third party titles has kept me from ever getting one.

@TaengtheHero The majority of that "shovelware" you refer to is 3rd party, if you even know what that means.

you seem to think Nintendo needs some kind of censorship plan to filter bad games on their console. It is not Nintendo's right to decide when a game is good or bad but rather simply whether a game works or doesn't. They don't allow games on their console that break it and that is all they are entitled to do.

They already have tried this with Nintendo coins.
Think of all the coins you have to spend on Mii Plaza for Puzzles and hats, and the amount of coins needed to unlock all features with their new messenger service.
Replace those coins with dollars or imagine if 5-10 coins cost a buck, then you have F2P software that's worse then most F2P games on IOS and Facebook.
Also if they can't even get digital right, I really doubt they'll ultimately get F2P right.
I mean they don't even have digital sales...I mean really? In this day and age you are expected to pay full price for digital games that are over a year old?
Also it's Reggie. He's an idiot and talks out his caboose.

@hami83 Except for the fact that the coins are free, and 5-10 coins costing a dollar is a figure you pulled completely out of your ass.
Also, if you're talking about the Virtual Console games, while I agree they're overpriced, a $4 Game Boy game is by no means "full price".

@Hinchy Yes I did pull the number out of my ass so people can see that the Nintendo coins on the 3DS is every bit the structure of F2P games, if not worse considering how much you need and how little you get.
Yes, they are free, THANKFULLY, but all I'm saying is Nintendo is probably trying out F2P structure without pissing anyone off buy actually charging money.
And by full price I mean, from time to time, digital platforms like PSN, Steam, XBL, Gog.com, Origin all have sales for their digital content. Nintendo's digital platforms never have sales, ever.
A game that was released over a year ago for $10 (World of Goo for example) is still $10 today and always will be. Not even a sale, for anything. It's pretty pathetic.

On the one hand, I find it hypocritical of Fils-Aime to be knocking another company for spamming iterations, since Nintendo was build upon that. On the other hand, I couldn't care less about Zynga. On the other hand again, does Nintendo have any real reason to make such bold statements against an upstart company if they're not really affected? Methinks Reggie doth protest too much. I think Reggie is lashing out at ALL of the companies making games for Apple, IOS, Social gaming etc that are incredibly popular, have revenue streams and retail for either nothing or 99 cents. If I was Nintendo, I'd be crapping in my pants too. The times they are a changing and the one thing that ain't changing? Nintendo.
Posted: Dec 27th 2011 8:32PM TaengtheHero said
Of course Nintendo didn't make all those games. That ridiculous to even say, let alone accuse me of not knowing. What I was commenting about was the fact that the Big N didn't care what kind of crap people made for their system, as long as they got the cash.
And That's what led to a LOT of Third-party games looking, sounding, and playing alike.
Exactly how many times do we need a "Family super fun party game night deluxe"?
That's where I feel like Nintendo should look in their own garden, before pointing out weeds in anothers.
