Been wanting to play this for a while but it is not accessible. This is the only other game I am waiting for on the virtual console.

Earthbound is the only one ever released in North America and it's currently not available anywhere unless you have a SNES. If you have a SNES or even if you intend on playing it via emulator, you probably don't need a beginner's guide to JRPGs.

That said, the entire series deserves to be available digitally on one Nintendo platform or another, legal entanglements be damned.

@pluupy I have to say this about some folks in the "inaccessible" label on EB.

Lololololol. Gamers really do get handed a ton these days.:P I beat that game when I was like, 11 or 12. It's not inaccessible in the least. No more inaccessible than older DQ/DW games.:P

@OrangeGamer Ah wait, as in "You can't get it" I'm just so used to people QQing about old JRPGs. There are ... ways. I still have my original SNES cart though. Earthbound needs to be on the Virtual Console.:/ Shoddy ninty and its Beatles copyright excuses.

Pssh Chrono got a perfect 10 on Gamespot back when they were harsher with their scores. Tis very essential.

@OGC I agree. It was a great game, just not exactly similar to Chrono Trigger(which isn't necessarily a bad thing). It had an innovative Battle System, and also pushed the limits on dialogue systems(though using 40+ characters to show that, uh.)

@OGC I really like Chrono Cross, but I'd hardly call it essential. At least, not as essential as Chrono Trigger.

Perfect list, I've played all of these barring Historia and I have to say they're amazing. I don't know if you've played Grandia II but that game is definitely really well made but perhaps an intermediate level challenge. The cancels/counters make battles into kind of a strategical bid for the upper hand as you figure out the best way to crush the opposition.

I would say, go read the character creation FAQs on Gamefaqs before you start, because some of them can be quite complicated.

@spekkio I think FF7 is more accessible than FF6 too.
I also think playing Radiant Historia before Chrono Trigger is getting things mixed up a bit.

Persona 4 is a little niche, but its something they should look at at least.

I would say FFIX is the best game to try out if youre interested in FF, since it blends the SNES and PS1 styles well. But that's me. VI is the only other great jumping point, lol.

I know everyone has different opinions, but to me, FFVIII was awful. I had to force myself to finish it just so I could feel better about spending 50 bucks on it instead of picking up Suikoden II...

@Dante G with you there, after the 2nd disc i really lost interest -_- i'm willing to stand behind the author's recommendation of starting with FF6,7, skipping 8 and playing 9 and 10. hang on to the good memories from those entries and forget the rest.

@tanooki equipped I have been on the second disk for years. I just can't seem to get into FF8. I have finished FF3, FF7, FF9, and FF10. FF10 is the easiest to get into if you are new to rpgs.

Super Mario RPG WAS my first RPG. I didn't even know what I was getting myself into with it.

But, I loved it and the very next RPG I played was FF VII.

I think Lost Odyssey is a better introduction to JRPGs than a Tales of title. You have to really like anime tropes and said art styles for Tales, however Lost Odyssey is FFX for the modern consoles.

Once FFX remake hits, that's still a go to. That got me into JRPGs in the modern era.

Plus, Namco Bandai can go... well, in spirit of the holidays, I'll save my bile spewing ways.

@TheKbob I definitely agree on Lost Odyssey! One of the best RPGs this gen. It really does feel like an FFX-level production with some very nice additions, and it's relatively cheap and easy to find for the 360.

There's already an FF game (+ recommendations) listed which use a turn based combat system like Lost Oddysey so it makes more sense to list a JRPG with a different style of combat then list one with the same style as one already listed.

@shankythestabber This is what I'm wondering. GS is basically a My First RPG that even veterans can enjoy. I'd choose it over an FF any day for a beginner, since it's got the most basic battle attempt you can find that is still balanced and competent, and avoids a lot of the pitfalls of earlier games (meatwalls, lost items, inordinate grinding, incomprehensible advancement requirements).

I'd say Eternal Sonata since it's short and has a lot simpler mechanics, but can still be really deep. It's the ultimate "beginner's RPG." Also, Persona 3 Portable is the best version of P3 and also a handheld game that is very fun, very fast and addictive.
