We spent years carrying around cassette tapes, then another bunch of years carrying around compact discs, and most of that time said media formats were played through one of Sony's various Walkman devices. It looks like the Japanese hardware company is looking to recapture some of its past success by employing the man who designed the original Walkman to put together the company's latest handhled: the PlayStation Vita.
When the US PlayStation Blog descended upon Japan for the Vita's recent launch, the site found out that Tokashi Sogabe, a 27-year employee of Sony, was heading up the company's "corporate design center." That same team lead development of the Vita, which apparently went through a variety of different forms before the team decided on the current unit. "The team went through various designs, including one with a sliding back like PSPgo and a clamshell, before settling on the final model after discussion with developers," the post explains. Even weirder? Apparently, one of the prototype models had touch pads in place of the dual analog sticks like an Xperia Play -- we're pretty glad that Sogabe's team ended up cutting that bizarre choice.
Regardless, given Sogabe's past with Sony, we've got high hopes that the Sport and Mini versions of the Vita aren't far off.

Ah yeah. I remember being on field trips with my classmates having those Walkmans and me feeling jealous. I eventually got one and it was awesome back then! Especially with my cassette tapes with my recorded radio songs. Those where the days. :-)

Can't even imagine the storm of fury that would erupt from within my very body if the touch pads stay.
But everything worked out nicely in the end.

What with OS rooting being mighty popular these days, I literally thought someone rooted a PSV with a Walkman... somehow. I was surprised there was no exclamation point in the post title to accentuate this demonic wizardry.

Wait... I'm confused. To me the Vita just really looks like a PSP with an extra stick and the buttons moved about a bit. Did he just walk in and say "Don't do those stupid touch analogue sticks or the slidey screen again, because they didn't work, just do what you did the first time"

That's because they used two separate motors for fast forward and rewind. You couldn't simply have one that went both ways as you can't "push" the tape onto the other reel. By only having one, production costs and retail prices were cut significantly.

@BlazeKing i remember those, it got annoying as you had to take the tape out and rewind with your finger, my finger hurt after that lol or when the tape gets stuck and it makes that horrible sound in your headphones.

I would like to actually see any concept art they have for the other design ideas. Those are always interesting to see what was rejected on their way to the current design.

Interesting. That would explain why there were so many different rumors about the design of the Vita. Frankly, I would've liked to have seen it released with a clamshell design (like DS or GBA SP, to protect that big, nice screen and the analog sticks), or perhaps as a slider (for portability reasons). Oh, well.

If I am correct some 3DS' actually had one of their screens scratched due to the clamshell design, right? No irony intended, just stating the obvious, even a good idea can have a somewhat faulty execution. I would root for the slide design, because I love the looks of my PSP Go, but there is a major problem, as playing a lot of hours with a thin design device tends to strain my hands, a more thick grip on the sides is essential to me.

and a mic and camera, not to mention the motion control stuff. Oh, and one hell of a power boost.

@acme64 Sorry, but I find that comment very irritating. There's a lot more to design than making the device look different, you have to make it WORK. They took the basic design of the original, then added a touchscreen, touchpad, and two analog sticks in place of a single slider. Then there's the improved processing guts to consider - speed, power consumption, memory, board design, heat dissipation, etc. Then there's battery design, material selection, durability, ergonomics, and visual appeal. The result they got is more than a little impressive, and certainly NOT something "anyone could have done." To be clear, I'm probably not going to buy one due to Sony's incompetence im other areas, but the hardware is still impressive.

@maxwell97 you are absolutely right about the difficulties of design. however EVERYONE in that field has to deal with those challenges, this isn't unique to Sony. So to have someone like Sogabe working in your product it raises the bar on what's expected. what we got is a great piece of kit specification wise, but ultimately unimaginative design wise.

I definitely would have preferred a clamshell or slider design. I want my portable consoles to be more portable and pocketable.
Though I'm so glad they went with real analog sticks. The GO's touch pads are nice for a phone, but they won't cut it for the kind of games I want to play on the Vita.

Thank god they went for real analogs in the end. Although dual touch pads would be better that what we had on the PSP. *shakes fist at PSP nub*

This title seems grossly misleading. It's implying that the Vita's design is somehow based on the Walkman simply because a dude worked on both teams. There doesn't seem to be any actual fact that it is. Maybe it's in the blog post, but I'm not reading that.

@radioactivez0r i think it's a figure of speech or something, the vita design is not based on the original walkman (the vita would look very strange if that would be the case) but the man who designed it worked on the vita.
