Apple has officially pulled iMame, the free, ROM-playing arcade unit emulator, from its App Store, killing one of the very few venues for getting old arcade games onto your iOS device of choice. The move is presumably due to Apple's long-standing policy of not allowing applications running on its devices to play emulated software (despite a few exceptions in Capcom and Atari).
As with other emulators to have somehow sneaked past Apple's App approvals process, it wasn't long before Apple got wind of iMame's uses and shut it down. That said, if you already snagged yourself a copy of the free App, it can't be taken away, though it can't exactly receive updates either. Unfortunate, yes, but at least you've got a few months of unadulterated, portable, emulated gaming ahead of you!

It was matter of time, the app itself was legal, but there was tutorial to use it to run other mame games, like Metal Slug, without even jailbraking the device....

@Vidaluko You don't even have to look at illicit use of ROMs. Just the fact that you could load your own ROMs makes it a violation of the iOS agreement because you could write code to run on the emulator without being a licensed iPhone developer. In fact, this thing would have been less of a violation of the iOS rules if it only allowed you to play built-in, unlicensed MAME ROMs.
iOS is a really restrictive platform and people don't notice it as much because Apple let up on their most egregrious things (like trying to force everyone to program stuff in C to kill the headwind of Flash CS5). It's still restrictive for anything that isn't a single-purpose, self-contained workflow that does not need to interact with other applications or rely on long term data storage. It's still a freedom-hating platform, they just backed off enough for people to forget the days of banning Twitter clients because the trending topic had a curse word in it.

Yet another reason why the iPhone is not for me.

Knew this was going to get pulled. Glad I grabbed it when I did.
Incidentally, the old iDOS emulator for iOS was also recently re-released on the Apple App Store as "Aemula Oldies", apparently with no more command line, but again -- apparently -- there is a way to load your own DOS-based software, although it requires jumping through a few hoops. I recommend grabbing that one too if you're interested in playing classic DOS games on your iPad/iPhone.

Here's hoping the quality gap between Android and iOS's stores can decrease over time. : /

This has less to do with Apple hating emulators and more do to with the fact that these emulators allow users to violate copyright by playing ROMs, leaving Apple open to lawsuits. If you understand that, you see that the Capcom Arcade and Atari apps do not constitute exceptions as Capcom and Atari own the rights to the games that their emulators play.

Meanwhile the Android market has plenty of emulators and nothing comes of it ever. By your logic Apple should pull iTunes because it allows people to violate copyright by putting pirated mp3s on their ipod.

Just because no one has sued yet doesn't mean that it doesn't open them up for the liability of it. Also android is more open sourced. Meaning that there isn't someone presiding over what is and isn't aloud on the platform. While iOS is completely controlled by Apple and is only run on apple devices making them more subseptible to suits. They have to oversite and control that should reduce piracy on their platform, if they don't use it it only looks bad on them.

Well, we can still jailbreak our phones and enjoy the good old arcade challenge with new unusable touch controls all day long. Long live missing the jump button repeatedly in Metal Slug 3, yay.

@uncolober ah you see that is why android lets you have the choice to use a bluetooth controller so you don't have to put up with touchscreen controls ;)

Caught t in time, feels good to play Black Tiger & TMNT Turtles in Time on the train. Didn't realize how many quarters those games ate. Now I know why Capcom and Konami are all about the nickle n dime, they are just going back to their roots. Oh well I get to listen to the pizza power song through my headphones while on my way to work. PIZZA POWER!
