Add me to the undecided list.

The games so far look amazing and I do want to play them, the bad part is the hassle and expense I must go in order to even play those games.

Plus, Sony left me with a bad taste with the PSP. I was a huge PSP supporter, hated how Sony just didn't give a big crap about it after they launched the PS3.

For now I guess I'll stay with my 3DS. Nintendo has already proven to me that they can support a home console and a handheld console just fine.

Yeah add me too. I was so on board when this thing was first announced but now with game prices, memory cards and whatnot I'm torn between the Vita and waiting for the iPad 3. Seriously.

Isn't the ipad 3 even more expensive, with weaker games? I mean ipads start at 500, and only go up from there.

Different markets as well. A tablet is a content consumption device, not really built with heavy gaming in mind. The PSV is a gaming machine with extras, like the 3ds or psp are.

I agree about the iPad. Having owned an Android tablet (bought it for gaming) I was largely pretty disappointed. With the Tegra chips, I was expecting, well, a Vita like experience. For me, the most important part of this review was this quote:

"The only consideration that really matters for a game system is its capacity to play games, and in that regard the PlayStation Vita is a resounding success"

Well, that's all I want in a gaming handheld. Browsers, GPS etc are all nice and dandy, but if it wasn't good enough for me to keep my Acer Iconia, it wouldn't be good enough for me to keep a dedicated gaming handheld.

It's always best to wait for them to iron out the kinks with handhelds if it's not immediately something you HAVE TO HAVE. Sony and Nintendo are both prone to releasing lots of different versions of their handhelds. It wouldn't be a shock to see firmware updates to allow multiple accounts, and new hardware with better battery life/better cameras.

I have a 3DS and I like it a lot, but I still wouldn't have bought one yet if I hadn't received it as a gift. I'm going to wait on this and see how it goes.

even as a fan of the Vita, I have to agree. Unless you absolutely have to have it, it's best to wait on handhelds. You'll get a better product in many ways by waiting a year or two.

My thoughts exactly, the Xoom/iPad/iPod touch/iPhone/Droids i have had, will not even remotely come near the experience you can get on a device such as this. I hadnt dont portable gaming in so long that i had forgot what it was really like, until i got my 3DS and PSP. Its shown me that while those idevices and android devices are great gap fillers, there is absolutely no way i would buy another tablet over this system, because honestly all i really wanted to do on a tablet is: PLAY GAMES!!!

It is my personal opinion that the rest of the world has taken such a liking to the whole "Apps" thing because now there is a professional excuse to own a toy.

As for me, i dont care i work hard for my money, and i will buy whatever toy i see fit!!!

I think that's exactly right, the success of the iPad, and to a lesser extent the android tablets, is that they give the illusion of somehow being a productivity device that will make your life easier, while in actuality it's just a toy for adults.

The fact that so many dedicated gamers are drawn to these types of devices confounds me, however. I get that tablets can do some pretty cool things, but getting one specifically for games just doesn't add up to me. The amount of money you end up spending to play what are essentially just dressed up Kongregate games does not seem like a great value to me.

I haven't bought a 3DS yet, but I do plan on picking one up eventually, same with the Vita. I'll wait for the inevitable price drops / redesigns, and pick one up along with a stack of backlogged games for super cheap.

The PSP never had a redesign...
Increased screen brightness and a slimming down do not a redesign make. More like a facelift. There's not a whole lot to take away here. They will eventually stop offering the 3G model (I'm just going to go out on a limb and guess no one is going to bother with the added cost just to mess with sub par social apps when any phone will do it better), but that's just not offering something.

Since everything is on proprietary carts instead of bothering with any sort of drive, there isn't much to strip from this one. There's no real point in taking out the cart drive, unlike the UMD (which actually weighed something and added quite a bit of heft to the system: see the PSP Go).

Basically, there's not going to be a redesign. There are no features missing from the PSV (unlike the 3DS). The only things to change would be placement of buttons (unlikely, simply due to Sony's convention when it comes to controllers), the finish (I'm sure a matte version will be released eventually), or perhaps removing features that aren't used, none of which would overtly affect that overall design.

That qualifies as a redesign as well. Redesigns don't have to add anything, they just change the console in question. Take the Gb to gb pocket for example. It was just reducing size and some minor screen improvements, but qualified as a redesign none the less.

I'd suspect a PSV redesign would add say, tv out, as well as die shrink the innards to save power and heat. Maybe a slider version if they can get the heat down enough.

@mrantimatter That's what I was hoping for... SOMETHING that's pocketable, and with features like TV-out (which I use a lot to watch PSN movies and shows on my TV through my PSPgo...)

I have been spoiled by the good looks and size of the PSPgo...

I would have pre-ordered a PSVita INSTANTLY if it looked more developed than it currently does... Maybe more like this: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/12/3/1623319/newpsp2white.png THAT mockup, (while based more on a current smartphone,) does have click-able analog sticks, and L2 + R2 buttons. (The L1 + R1 buttons are now more on the corner of the device and push in at a slight angle, and the tip of your finger rests on the smaller L2 + R2 buttons, It looks/sounds weird, but if you imagine actually holding it, then it makes sense.) Would have made it a complete portable system... Whilst NOT skimping on looking decent...

Anyway... I'm sure the Vita is currently great, but it will only get better in the future. Plus, I never like to own the first iteration of a product anyway...

Speaking as someone in a relationship where she keeps the cell phone as we do not want the added cost of keeping 2 cell phones; I'm getting the 3G model for the use of the internet while out and about.
So I'll be able to send people messages while in walmart, since walmart still doesn't have wifi, which is downright stupid when you consider the fact that most Home Depot stores have wifi.
But yeah, I'm getting the 3G, so clearly while it's not necessary for those of you wish cell phones; for those of us that share one, and aren't the person that actually carries it, the 3G is a great option.
Plus purchasing the number of hours i can have the 3G active, instead of the amount of data, is an amazing alternative, assuming that AT&T goes with the same method of 3G distribution that the Japanese provider did.

@APV A resdeign is not very likely and you can stop dreaming about a slider version since they went with the PSPish design to mirror the front and rear touch, so you'd have an idea of where you are when you touch the rear touch. TV out is possible, but I doubt that they would add the ability to click the sticks since that would alienate people who bought the original design much like if you added a second nub to the PSP.

However, you can probably bank on a much smaller screen for (better portability) and better battery life along with a matte finish. I don't think the 3DS is very portable either and I find myself either placing it in one of my jacket's big pockets or in a backpack. Also that with time those memory card prices will go down and thats why I am getting a 4GB until the 32 or 16 GB prices go down which I doubt will take long and eventually the price for the PS Vita will also go down.

@Mononon Not really true. There are MANY plastic capacitive displays. And, this IS plastic. Not gorilla glass. It's mentioned up in the review that it's a single piece along the face of the device LIKE those that have "gorilla glass," but it is itself just plastic, like the rest of the device.

I'm getting one the second Persona 4: The Golden has a US release date.

Combine that with Blazblue, new Yakuza game, a Disgaea game and the ability to hook it up to my PS3 with certain games, and I'm looking at the most promising handheld in the market.

I will certainly buy one but I would bet real money that the price is dropped by September at the latest. Parents are buying their kids smart phones in record numbers, I don't think handhelds that end up being over 320-340 dollars when you factor in a game and a memory card are going to go over so well. For people like us? Sure, I can't wait to get one.

Versus a cellphone that retails for $300 + a two year contract, at 60-120 a month?

The PSV would be far cheaper in the long run over that.

I'm with you here. I think the price of the system is fair, but the price of the memory cards should be at least 3/4 what they are now, and the system should come with something like Little Deviants, and no game should be over $40 (e.g. Uncharted: Golden Abyss).

No, I think Dusty is (mostly) right. Review scores are fine as long as they aren't used for comparison. You can't look at a couple of scores and automatically know that Child of Eden is a better/ worse game than Uncharted 3.

I'm not a massive fan of the concept of trophies/achievements but I'm still curious as to whether the Vita has its own trophy system, or it works in conjunction with the PS3. Do Vita trophies add to your overall list, and do trophies achieved on Vita transfer over if you play the same game on PS3 (WipEout, for instance, or Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock)?

@DustbinK Memory cards were the norm last console generation, and never for handhelds besides the PSP. That doesn't mean they're ok in 2011.

Also the idea that there's anyone in the world defending $100 for a memory card who isn't working for Sony is hilarious and sad.

@CARmakazie Considering you'll have to run games off of these things it makes sense that they're forcing speed on you. This is also one of the reasons why they didn't go with microSD. A Class-2 card just wouldn't cut it for the functionality they want and it would create a lot of problems for gamers.
