In terms of value, those numbers actually sound decent for the Apple-obsessed consumer who has to update with each new iteration of their devices.

That said, in my local mall, the GS is immediately next to the Apple Store. This arrangement has a very veterinarian-next-to-the-meat-shop vibe to it.

@RedRaptor82

Does GS sell any new devices? Because the people that like to upgrade every year generally use the money from selling the previous model to help fund the purchase of the new model. Can't do that with GS if they don't sell any of these new since all you get is credit.

Hopefully its not 180 for the 64GB iPod, or 400 for the 64GB or 32GB+3G iPad (let alone 64GB+3G)

I'd be shocked if $400 wasn't for the top of the line in pristine condition. This is game stop, they're out to screw everyone every way they can...

If you want to sell an apple device hit up Craigslist, if you are savvy enough (can use google basically) and jailbreak you can usually sell a generation old device for what you paid for it new. If you don't want to deal with CL hit up good ole` ebay, you'll get more than GS and won't even have to go out side to do it.

@Tiradyn Only if they want store credit do they get anything worth writing home about. Also if they want cash they have to give us ID with their photo, address, and birth date, per pawn shop laws. I'm sure people use fake ones that we wouldn't necessarily catch, though.

Every so often cops show up looking for stolen stuff. That's always exciting.

2nd gen iPods still sell for $100 on eBay. Gamestop declares possibilities all the time, they'll probably tell their employees to glance at the devices and offer $80 regardless of the gen. Or better yet, they'll try to convince the customer their device is older then they thought to offer even less

@Teeree At my store at least we have to turn them on and play with them, as we do with consoles and the like. I believe that is company policy, but having dealt with numerous egregious mistakes by the gamestop closest to us I know not all stores and employees act that way.

@Bielzer If they are selling it for cash they still have to give the store their driver's license and they record their license number and birth date in the computer system. Gamestop also keeps records on trade ins for store credit.

No extra 10% for Power Up members though. Oh well.

This is happening for one reason only. The only way a company like GameStop will turn a profit in the near future is hardware. Pretty much everything will be available via download on launch in the future! Better for publishers, better for game devs, also better for the planet in the long run. Plus it beats waiting outside a GameStop at midnight with the rest of the no hoper generation and 30 year old basement warriors when u want a game at launch.

@TenEightyPeewee Doubtful, majority of people like actual items. All digital would ruin holiday sales, where businesses make the most money. Gift givers don't want to buy codes, they want to buy things that can be wrapped.

@TenEightyPeewee If everything goes digital in the future, I'll just stop playing games. That's ridiculous. Game developers and companies need to look past their greed and realize that abolishing used game sales and going all digital is actually counter-productive and hurts the industry.

I just went to the site and read the thing, and it says "Customers can receive up to $180 for an iPod Touch®, up to $300 for an iPhone® and up to $400 for an iPad®."

So there goes my assumption, that "up to" thing meaning that you'll most likely get 180 tops for a 64GB iPod 4th Gen, 400 for a 64GB+3G iPad 2

Its like the time I wanted to sell them my old DS. They offered me 20 dollars and called it "a pretty good offer"

As much as I loathe, nay, hate Gamestop I did trade in my old 3GS for a pretty sweet discount on a limited edition Zelda 3DS (the 3DS cost me $75 with tax). So I've shopped with them twice the entire year of 2011, I'm definitely not the person keeping them in business.

except that $400 is going to be for a 64gb+3G iPad 2... which new costs almost 1k and you could ebay or craigs list for likely double what GS will give you.

Anyone else notice that they're offering less for the iPhone than they are for the iPad? iPhones cost more than iPads do, people just don't realize it because part of the cost is subsidized by your cell phone carrier. So they'll be making the most money from iPhones.

pretty sure 1st gen ipod touches would get like 10$ and 2nd would get maybe 50-75$ tops. wounder how much used ones go for , i'm pretty sure its easier buying one off of a friend doing it that way , then selling it buying it used at gamestop.

It's easy to hate on Gamestop (and rightfully so), but their initial trade-in value on these was actually somewhat decent. It was shocking. Yes, it was less money than you would get from Craigslist or eBay, but the disparity wasn't so great that a person is an "idiot" for opting for convenience in this case.

Of course I'm sure once they obtain a bit of stock, that'll quickly change.

I never understood why people have to point out that you'd get more on ebay or craigslist. Isn't this common with everything when it comes to trade in on any used product? Same with cars, you'd get more selling it privately but it would take more time.

For myself, I occasionally sell things on ebay and its a grueling process. Makes me curious how many people who say, "Use ebay! " have actually used ebay before.

@Roflrex

I hate eBay. Way too many fees these days. CL or listing in a buy/sell forum at a tech site is the way to go of you want to maximize profits. But, yes, something like GS can be more convenient. Just keep in mind you're only getting credit at GS. Which, in my case, is nearly useless since I buy all my gaming related items online.

In response to your points :

Trunas: I fall into the normal male demographic that enjoys playing games as much as a tv show or movie and believes they're an equal and often more enjoyable entertainment medium and yet still has time to maintain a full time job and take a shower regularly... Unlike 90-% of my midnight brethren. (my last experience was so bad I now wait for release day delivery instead)

Roflrex: True, the older generation do like physical media but that will only last as long as them or until they are forced to switch to the alternative/mainstream method which will be dictated by the publishers and developers. Distribution and physical media production costs would decrease extensively meaning more profit. Company's don't care if u can't wrap it. They'll sell a physical download voucher with a code in the interim.
The digital download model doesn't seem to hurt apple, people have adapted to their app stores pretty efficiently because they have to. There's no alternative. People will still buy and download the latest games even if they don't get a box with it. The latest call of duty title is an obvious indicator of where we're heading. no expensive prestige special edition they make hardly any money on, just a regular or hardened edition with a load of download cards inside for redeemable digital content, one of which being a digital subscription! Lobe it or hate it, it's where we're heading. If they can cut out the middle man, they will!

Churrotastic: Believe it or not the game industry is doing everything it can to stop consumers buying used games. (That brilliant online pass code u have to enter on the card that isn't inside your used copy of your 2nd hand game will tell u that).

Publishers and developers don't see a penny/cent for any used games sold, only the retailers.. and they don't make games. So none of that is going back into the industry, less money, less jobs, less games for you to buy! Want call of duty 23 and gears of war 9? Keep buying used!

Hobbit gamer: Yes, the high brow Joystiq editorial of video game journalism, how will people cope with my slack punctuation on a forum. How would the industry deal with this.. You're so right. I retract my comment and withdraw my offer of replacing a McElroy on a temporary basis..
