YES YESSSS
Illusion of TIME was one of my favourite SNES games.
Soul Blazer I didn't like as much, but Terranigma was amazing.
These games need more recognition

@Helghast102 I had such a hard time trying to beat Illusion of Gaia in the end.

That game was one of the greatest games I've ever played.

I remember being sick as hell one march staying home from school back in 95. I felt like crap but dammit if I didn't try to jump for joy when I finally beat Illusion of Gaia.

Great game, one of those gems from the SNES days

I remember beating this game also. I had this, secret of mana, and some other rpgs. lol.

My favorite time was Mario Rpg when I had the Super jump skill and I figure out how to hit that button so many times to hit the enemy. That part was my favorite and the Final Fantasy 8 with squall and his 99 level breaker. woooooooo (I had to count the playstation button input without looking at the screen. lol)

I actually loved this trilogy... more Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma than Soul Blazer, but still; I never knew it was an underappreciated series. All my friends played the games when the SNES was around.

I own 2 out 3 of these games. They're not that great from a gameplay point of view. Interesting elements, but if you're looking for must-play jrpgs, then look further.

@Jpirme777 Totally disagree. I had a blast playing all 3 of them. It's one of those under-the-radar trilogies that everyone should check out.

Nice. This is one of my all time favorite series. Emulation gave me the chance to finally play Terranigma a few years ago, and it was like rediscovering an old favorite that you'd never played before. Great games. The SNES made Quintet one of my favorite developers ever. I really miss that studio.

I never really warmed up to Soul Blazer (despite pretty much STUDYING its Nintendo Power entry before playing it), but Illusion of Gaia is one of my favorite games of all-time. It always baffles me how, unlike Terranigma, you never see it listed among the best SNES games. It was wonderful.

Small clarification on the whole pig and spirit deal. Speaking as the person who did the script of the game for GameFAQs(I'm a huge Illusion of Gaia fan, so.... yeah), waned to note that the mother just manifested to explain why the pig jumped into the fire.

...Just a small nitpick.

Holy moley this was a sight for sore eyes. I loved those games, and they actually had pretty deep storylines for the time.

Played many games from Quintet - Actraiser, Robotrek (hard as heck), even the Granstream Saga (try and remember that one!). Ah - those were the days...

Now I just feel old. Meh.

Glad to know there are people in video games journalism that show an appreciation for the Soul Blazer trilogy. I started with Illusion of Gaia, which remains one of my favorite SNES games. Soul Blazer was great as well, and though I've gotten far in Terranigma I never finished it. Nintendo and Square-Enix's lack of recognition of this series and their reluctance to release this wonderful titles on the Virtual Console is such a shame.

Terranigma is a great game. I remember certain boss fights being tough; Bloody Mary coming to mind in particular. I loved how certain actions changed the landscape of the world and towns could be progressed. Very neat concept for its time.

@(Unverified) It should be noted that this boss fight is also terrifying. Even as a 16-bit battle, the set-up, music, and boss sprite all somehow colluded to create something I had nightmares about.

Actually, looking back on it, a lot of SNES RPGs didn't really pull any conceptual punches; most of the greats all tackled some pretty scary stuff that might have been made all the worse by the presentation (as your brain fills in the details). No movie postapocalypse has haunted me with true, unshakeable disturbing of Chrono Trigger's (it took a Harlan Elison book to do that).

Soul Blazer was my first intro to Epicness on the SNES. I borrowed it from a friend and soon became hooked. It has its issues but I have some very, very fond memories of it. Right down to the music.

Oh god, the music!!! All of Quintet's games were amazingly scored, quirky and somehow ephemeral even when it was attempting a 'lighter' feel. Haunting is another word that comes to mind. Though it wasn't just the music. There were scene where the combination of the dialogue, the background sound effects, and the somewhat unconventional visuals just burned right into your brain and not just invited you to think, but pretty much demanded it. So enchanting.

Some people mentioned The Grandstream Saga above. I remember seeing an article on the net, possible at Hardcore Gaming 101, that managed to link it thematically to the Qunitet SNES trilogy. It's not as good as its predecessors, but worth checking out if you love the original trilogy.

Thank god these titles are appreciated. They are seriously wonderful and super fleshed-out. Illusion of Gaia is a bloody pain! But I gotta add, Last Bible III for the Super Famicom/SNES. I think it's a spin-off from the Shin Megami Tensei series. Please play this game, don't be intimidated by the massive amounts of Japanese. Beautiful in graphics and sound, it is definitely one of my favourite JRPGs ever.

"Playing God" has gotta be the dumbest phrase people in the video game community use.

Minecraft... you build houses, make axes, plant torches around -- this is God? In ActRaiser you run around as a Japanese Conan and you're God? I don't get it.

Even with Universe Sandbox I wouldn't call that playing God.

Is it used that often? Honestly, this is the first time I've seen it in relation to video game news (see it all the time in science news, ugh). Then again, there's Populous and Black & White but I think that's the point of those games. It's a genre.
