CCP launching EVE character names and pictures into space via giant balloon
27
Well, it's not technically space, but it's as close as you can get without the help of some Russian rocketeers and their flying machines. As a token of gratitude, the Icelandic MMO moguls at CCP will be placing the names and pictures of every currently subscribed player character in EVE Online (as of 23:59 GMT tonight) into a capsule, which will then be sent into near-space via high-altitude balloon.
High-altitude balloons cannot actually leave the Earth's atmosphere and enter legit outer-space, but they are capable of traveling hundreds of thousands of feet into the air; high enough to see the curvature of the Earth against the blackness of space. The event will take place during CCP's own Fanfest 2012 in beautiful Reykjavik, Iceland.

Wow, that seems... completely stupid and pointless which, come to think of it, sounds a lot like eve online, so never mind.

I'm not the friendliest guy, I'll admit, but you should consider trolling less. There are probably articles about games you like, try posting in those.

@TheKbob They will all be stored on a USB flash drive, whoever finds it gets to keep the 32gb drive and delete all of the contents promptly.

Why? Unless they load this balloon up with lots and lots of fireworks as well, what's the point?

This is why people hate marketing departments.

@Zebra If I could design a program to continually refresh an article and upvote one comment, it would be set to this comment.

Well that's what the turtle gets for training his Industry skill to level 5 when all he does is PVP.

Hey, now. That's incredibly sad. Indeed, I should consider the consequences of such an act. Obviously, I was referring the "cool factor" to the fact the info is launched into near outer space.

It's because people think "Oh one balloon won't make a difference" or "Oh one soda can won't make a difference" that our world is still so shitty. The singular pieces of litter add up.

The only 'why' that's coming to mind is 'why are Joystiq commentors so boring?'
Pretty neat-o, if you ask me.

neat-o in a been there done that sorta way I guess. More interesting when its a project that say takes pictures on the ascent. This really does nothing.
I guess congratulations are in order for tying dead weight to a large balloon and watching it fly off into the distance.....yay.... *noisemaker noise*

It would be cool if each player had a tangible object going up, but it sounds like it's just... data. If it was an object with their names carved into it, even that'd be neat. But what's the point if a flash drive with a list of names on it goes into the upper atmosphere?

Where in the article does it say it's on a flash drive?

Really they shouls spend more time, money, and effort to make the user interface more friendly to new comers.
I don't care how much "fun" the game may be once learned. Only thing I remember from the trial was how horrendous the controls were, day two of my trial...

An actual time capsule would have been cooler, so in the year 3514 they dig it up and are all WTF?
