Glasses-free 3D is hardly anything new (how are you guys digging the 3DS?) but how about high-def 3D without the frames for your peepers? That's a bit more impressive, especially considering this isn't an expensive television set we're talking about. It's an expensive phone and tablet line from MasterImage 3D.
The company's 4.3 inch smartphone and 10.1 inch tablet will be on display at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a representative told Joystiq earlier today. Each device will showcase full 720p high definition in 3D and utilizes MasterImage 3D's Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier Technology to produce "brighter images, reduced moiré effects (or rippled appearance) and the ability to work in any orientation -- portrait or landscape." We imagine it'll also play Angry Birds.
We've contacted MasterImage 3d for more information on the company's new tablet and smartphone.

Angry Birds in 3D? I don't care about the cost, I want ten.

Based on the terrible battery life of the 3DS, I imagine this will be the Laserdisc player of tablets. You'll probably have to swap the battery out every 30 minutes to watch a movie.

A tablet battery can be bigger than the 3DS battery. If you saw the size of the battery in the 3DS, it would all make sense. Also, you can make them bigger when you don't have to worry about them being user replaceable, so instead of wrapping it in plastic it can just remain in its foil encasement. Extra millimeters of space is serious business in handhelds.

Can't wait until they debut the complete death of 3D for the next 30 years, it's going to be rad!

It will work horizontal and landscape, but I'll take it I still have to look at it straight, move slightly to the left and oops.. no more 3D.

Well, yeah, of course. There's not enough pixels to create the multitude of separate images needed to allow separate angle viewing. Toshiba has shown an autostereoscopic 3D TV with ultra-HD resolution that allows up to 9 people to view the 3D images, but that's a 55-inch TV that admittedly produces very shallow to near-indiscernible 3D effects.
On portable devices like the 3DS and smartphones (EVO 3D and Thrill 4G) I don't see it as a problem since it's a personal device that you will always be looking at head on.

@ItsameMatt03 i'm with the other guy,no one looks directly at thier phone/tablet,viewing it fromt he side is cool, ppl will be like "is he using his phone?" and you'd be like "yeah i am,but from slightly turned to the right so you think i'm hip"
haha having said that, really who doesnt look directly at their phone?
It's like saying the sound quality is bad when you have your phone in your pocket :/

I really want a tablet or laptop, and the ability to do autostereoscopic 3D would be icing on the cake for me.

Make a 7" version and we'll talk.
I like the 3D on the 3DS but it's so rarely done well. I found it quite intriguing that Mario Kart is what persuaded Nintendo to go 3D but yet Mario Kart 7's 3D effect was barely visible and hardly inspiring, to say the least.
Still, I want to watch 3D movies at home, (Haters be damned) glasses free and a tablet seems the logical way to go if it's 7". I can't imagine playing a 3D game on a tablet, though. No freaking way with the limited angles and general awkwardness of trying to keep the tablet perfectly aimed at your eyes while trying to much around with on-screen controls.

Really? I find Mario Kart's 3D visuals to be outstanding. I've been continually blow away by how infinite the depth is. It's positively gorgeous in 3D. The depth is what I love so much, because I can judge the distance between myself and kart's ahead of me.
I'm a big proponent of 3D having a 3D plasma and a decent-sized library of 3D blu-rays along with ESPN 3D and Xfinity 3D programming, not to mention I have been playing every compatible video game recently in 3D. I've seen enough that I think I'm a pretty good judge by now of what is good 3D and what's not.

@Mmmmz maybe it's you? not everyone has the same eyesight.
For me 3D doesnt work as well when i have my contacts in but with my glasses on it's a huge leap in depth.

Glasses free 3D at different viewing angles would be interesting. I'm guessing this would be the next tech. :) Looking forward to this. Also, hopefully this will be the future of 2nd generation 3DS plus the battery life of course.

Dear everybody:
Guess why the 3DS put it's 3D screen on a separate panel from it's touch interface? Protip: put your finger in front of the 3D screen.. note how your brain goes all ballssquirrelly? Yeah, now actually TOUCH the screen. Have fun with that fingerprint mind-fu. Wake me up when you've got the retina HUD up & runnin.

Their oem partners will be showing phones and tablets. I assure you it will be awesome. Weve seen demos. IP far better than the tech used by Sharp in 3ds. Zero impact on battery, issue will be what content available.
