Myst 3D video shows off Myst, not so much 3D
29
Myst 3D is coming to the 3DS in March, and a video from publisher Maximum Family Games offers a glimpse into all of its dimensions -- and they're falling flat. Joystiqer Tom P. points out that the main action shown in the demo video takes place on the lower, non-3D screen. There is some discovery gameplay on the upper, 3D screen, but since Maximum Family Games is billing Myst 3D as a game with "sharp 3D environments," we were expecting a game with sharp 3D environments.
As the friendly warning at the beginning of the demonstration states, we aren't able to see the true 3D effects in the video, and it's possible that the Myst holding screen on the 3D panel looks utterly outstanding. We'll keep both eyes out for more Myst 3D gameplay videos -- mostly because you can't see 3D graphics with just one eye.

I think Riven holds up much better than Myst. I'd rather see that on the 3DS.

Graphically, yes. Try to get someone to play Riven nowadays, though and they will want to kill you. Some of those puzzles are downright SADISTIC.

@bigwhiteyeti I wouldn't call them sadistic, I'd call them ruthlessly logical. The game certainly requires a notepad to play.

Some of them require leaps of logic akin to jumping off a bridge. It is NOT an easy game. Nothing can be ignored, since it all ties to a greater puzzle.
I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying no one has made anything quite as challenging lately.

Ah, Maximum Family Games, publishers of Sniper Elite on the Wii.
Seriously though, this port looks TERRIBLE.

Can't wait to pay $30 bucks for a 20 year old game......
Or I can wait until Nintendo's next handheld release and buy that port instead.
Release original content Nintendo. You're kind of a joke among the older crowd.

Nintendo (and all other console owners) do not use 'this game is shit' as a reason to refuse licensing, and never have.
If the game is shit, it's up to publishers to decide whether or not to release it (i.e. if they think it will sell despite being shit, or not) and it's up to customers to not buy it. I don't see a problem with that; it works in every other creative industry (music, films, etc). Thankfully nobody is forcing us to buy mediocre products.
As for this one, I don't care about 3d, and I don't think I ever finished Myst, so maybe I'll consider it, but it doesn't sound especially promising.

@gamabunta You're a freaking idiot you know that. Do you know myst has been on the Mac OS, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, 3DO, Microsoft Windows, Atari Jaguar CD, CD-i, AmigaOS, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and iOS. This isn't the first time they're ported myst on to a console, blame the Cyan or the 20 publishers who ported it.

In this day and age. This is as about as interesting as watching paint dry. It's up there with announcing 1995's Ridge Racer on the PSP.

This is a ****ing joke, right?
Even walking from place to place is on the non-3d screen? The goddamn islands are what I wanted to see in 3D, not the pages of the damned books.
I swear Myst has had the laziest ports...

This should be ported and released on eshop for $9.99 (or even less). That would be perfect.
But I'll just find a pc version of it somewhere. I remember playing this when i was very young (actually one of my first videogames!) and being completely at a loss at what to do.

I would not be surprised to see this as a part of the one from the DS.... The problem here is where various media forms have been calling 3d over the past 10 or so years was nothing more than finer shading that provided the illusion of 3d. Whereas Lenticular 3d and Parallax 3d or even duo chrome-atic are more advadeced forms of de presentation. The sales media has tossed that word 3d around far to long with an inaccurate meaning just to sell more games. THIS, is what's wrong with people NOT correcting thier english, syntax, punctuation and just saying... 'well it's only the internet, I can get away with it here.. ' DUUUHHHHHHH. Laziness ALWAYS comes with a cost/price to pay...ALWAYS.
