And so it begins! Happy New Year! Not surprised to see Mortal Kombat on the list. I'll pick this up eventually. Can't wait to see what other 8 games finish behind Skyrim.

@Pollockroc Um, actually, you misspelled it...

I don't think Modern Warfare 3 will even make Joystiq's top 10 though. Black Ops din't make it last year either. Not hating, I bought the game.

No, you aren't, I'd love to see animalities and ESPECIALLY friendships. Babalities are really cool but man do I miss friendships.

As someone who IS knee deep in the FGC I have to say I don't believe MK was the best fighting game of the year, but I will agree with you that how far this series has come is definitely laudable.

Sweetness. Begun, it has.

Didn't get around to MK, but gosh darn it I loced the demo. The presentation was just about perfect for the theme of Mortal Kombat.

I'm even more excited for the sequel to this game because I absolutely loved it! I loved all the little shout outs and Easter eggs that they put in as well that pay homage to the series roots!

I was so excited for MK9, but was so disappointed by it. They need to stop taking the story so seriously. They need to get James Gunn in on the writing or something. GO MORE CRAZY WITH IT!

Okay, as much as I dislike Jordan Mallory's writing, my heart really goes out to him this time. As a fellow fighting game player, I know how much this must have hurt him to write.

This rendition of Mortal Kombat happen to be the first one I have not bought on release in a long time. Its sorta simmering on the back burner for me. I am going to pick it up come 2012 even if I missed a huge online population it may have, I'm sure the single player and story will hold me for a good amount of time.

What? The online community is still thriving, the game's less than a year old. Hell there's still a decent community for MK vs DC Universe.

Mortal Kombat is definitely one of the best games, not only of 2011, but of this generation thus far. It is a great improvement over all the crap that came after MK4. This game would personally be somewhere in the top 5 for me, but glad to see it was loved by Joystiq as well.

THUNDER TAKE YOU!!!

I've seen these arguments floated for Mortal Kombat as a Game of the Year in a few places. Is it a fair criticism of these arguments to say MK is getting GotY nods because it has finally cleared the bar of being a tournament level fighting game? That seems like too low of a bar to me for GotY status.

I love fighting games but I'm not that tuned into what makes a superb tournament fighter. Also, I've always felt MK had amateur art direction, character design and costume design. I feel the same way about this newest edition. What does this game do exceptionally well? Is it the online mode?

@draffauf

nostalgia + history of broken gameplay + it didn't suck/wasn't broken = GOTY

Apparently.

Well, most people giving it goty didn't NOTICE it was broken. I guess I would make the equation something more like:

nostalgia + ignorance = goty

@draffauf Yeah, it seems like we've set our standards pretty low for GOTY nowadays. Whatever happened to GOTY actually breaking ground? This game is just a reboot.

It's pretty pathetic that when someone makes a good point over something that's admittedly not that important people just dismiss because it's a little pretentious. I mean why bother having these awards if they're not worth discussing?

I enjoyed MK, bout I wouldn't call it the best fighter of the year KoF13 is pretty good. MK just has the better production values. I really disliked that they kept the dial-a-combo system. They said they got rid of it, and then they backtracked and said they had them but only 3 buttons long. It's just not particularly intuitive. Still a good game, probably a better video game than KoF13, but not a better fighter if that makes any sense. Though one thing I want to point out in regards to balance in MK is that there isn't a lot of character variety. Every character is the same height with the same movement speed and they call have projectiles. Hit boxes don't really change for the playable characters either, which leads to some questionable stuff happening.

Eh, Arcana Heart 3 is a better fighting game technically.
What MK9 has going for it are perfectly orchestrated plays toward gamer nostalgia, an impeccable sense of presentation, and it handily drubs the competition in the realm of single player modes and activities. That's what makes MK9 such a hit with the general populace, despite the FGC being lukewarm on it.

I got it as part of that Toys R Us deal, and was really dissapointed with the combat.

I was hyped at E3 and everything, it looked like a good, if not great challenge to Capcom and Atlus's games. But I was really underwhelmed by the chunkiness and bleh story. The graphics were nice, and the damage models were amazing, but the fighting mechanics itself were bland. Plus the DLC was meh. Rain and Kenshi were great, but Freddy and Skarlet were bleh.

When the manager at my local EBGames said that Mortal Kombat was a better game than Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, I got so angry I was barely able to leave the store without yelling. "Well," I later thought, "At the very least, I don't think many other people will agree with him. Mortal Kombat started out as an unnecessarily violent copycat of Street Fighter that held the industry back ten years in the PR department, and today it's still just as similar to how Jack Thompson describes videogames. Well, before I go to bed, I'll just check Joystiq one last time."

After you guys put it on your list, I threw MK back in my 360 after not having played it since around May. It really is a blast. I used to like fighting games, but so many of them now are just incredibly inaccessible (looking at you, UMvC3). I love that there's so much singleplayer stuff to do, and the actual fighting is easily better than MK has ever been.
