Great picks, especially Dead Space 2 & Warhammer 40K Space Marine. Two totally underappreciated games.

You Don't Know Jack was probably the most fun I've had in a trivia game ever. Well executed and modernized for current-gen consoles. Awesome game to play with friends and family.

Once you have purchased it in a speedy manner, you will probably end up playing through it very slowly indeed. I find myself making unnecessary cups of tea, sandwiches and taking a smoke break every checkpoint. Combined with the terror, a heart attack is surely not very far away.

I did the SAME thing. Took me a year to finish the 1st one. I quit playing at night in favor of well lit rooms and other people in that room. Stopped using my headset completely, was just way too much... That game left a permanent indention on the edge of my couch...

@Haggard Can't be serious, Dead Space 2 lacked any of the tension and atmosphere of the first game & went too Hollywood, even spamming the player with enemies on a few occasions.. the only "scary" moment was near the beginning when your in a lift, which I won't spoil.. the necro's even "announce" their entrance, it's like they couldn't be bothered with the horror angle... the Original Dead Space beats it hands down, even on 4 or 5 breakthroughs I still check the corners, & behind me just in case (even after beating DS2)

That's why I didn't like the 2nd one either...it was only terrifying in the sense of being like RE4 and feeling overwhelmed with enemies, and perhaps not being able to shoot them all without spamming the stasis button in return.

To be fair, the creepiness of the first game was slightly recaptured in those areas with the chicken-enemies. But overall, not as good as the first.

Great picks, I play YDKJ pretty often when I have company over (the Scene it big button controllers make it even better!), and I loved Space Marine. I completely forgot about Clash of Heroes, it might be my favorite XBLA game of 2011.

That said, I got pretty bored wtih Dead Space 2. I did make it all the way through, but it just didn't grip me like the first one did.

Well, at least this means DS2 didn't make the top 10. Aside from the gross-out moments, I found it utterly forgettable compared to the first one. I tried to get into M&M:CoH but I just can't for some reason. YDKJ is legitimately wonderful.

I completely agree that Dead Space 2 is a gaming accomplishment by EA that really disappoints me that it was overlooked. That opening scene was burned into my memory for weeks. The sheer terror I felt walking around every corner, or walking through every door.

The only gripe I have against it was the last level and the last boss. It felt lacking and it just didn't fit in with the rest of the game.

Dead Space 1 had serious control issues that didn't even make sense... but that was corrected in Dead Space 2...

If you're looking for a horror game to scare you, "pick up Amnesia" (I haven't played it myself.)

If you didn't find Dead Space scary, then Dead Space 2 won't be either. But it's more polished, it has better action, more environment variety, more enemy variety, better weapons, and a much better presentation and story.

Personally, I've never been scared by a videogame, so I find the complaint that a game isn't scary perplexing. I'm curious, what games do you find scary, if not Dead Space?

no it doesn't. what "control issues" are you talking about?

@ItsameMatt03

if you're anything like me, you'll wish Dead Space 2 was a lot better than it actually turned out to be. as has been said above, it's a completely forgettable experience that never really needed to happen...yet it did, because it's EA. oh, and for some reason Isaac decides to turn non-mute so he speaks nonsense all throughout DS2. i honestly can't think of a single thing that makes DS2 a better game than DS1, besides the obviously better graphics, of course.

i thought DS1 actually was a little frightening, whereas by the time i got to DS2, all the novelty of xenomorphs coming out of the floor and through grates had worn off. DS2 is full of cheap scares, like any shitty Hollywood horror flick these days. it's also way more action oriented. that whole outside the ship fighting a hulking xenomorph in space was cool and everything, but do you see where i'm going with this? they obviously catered DS2 to appeal to a more mainstream crowd. given where EA wants to take the series, it's not really surprising that DS2 is as underwhelming as it is.

lack of a stasis button on the controller; you had to go to inventory to refill. Broken mechanic, but I got around it by...not using stasis that much in the first game.

They screwed this up in DS2 by providing a stasis button, but then overcompensating by putting in too much enemy spamming. There. I said it 3x now. lol.

Dead space 2 is not scary. And for a horror game, that is enough to crucify it. Amnesia: the Dark Decent is how it is done. That game understood that if monsters can be dispatched easily from across the room by pointing at them and clicking, they stop being scary very quickly. In Amnesia, you are penalized for even looking directly at the monsters. Your character acts like one would if one were mortally terrified of something and because of that, you feel terrified as well.

Also great to see an early 2011 release like Dead Space 2 get some respect!

It is a shame BF3 will not be in the top 10 but I can't understand why, if MW3 makes it in however I will shit a brick. I played 10-15 mins of the campaign and had to turn it off and I am sick to death of the same old shit multiplayer! Sure kill confirmed might be a saving grace but it's the bull crap lone wolf style game play that is just the pits. I don't mean to upset anybody but those are my thoughts.

I don't think Joystiq has put a CoD in the top ten in awhile, maybe the original Modern Warfare? I don't see that trend changing.

I still have yet to beat Dead Space 2. I got to about level 7 and haven't continued since. I definitely don't agree with BF3 being there though. That's easily one of my top 5 this year. Just got an eyefinity setup for my computer and that game very quickly became my flagship "holy crap this is awesome" game.

I'm dissapointed that Dead Space didn't make Joystiq's top ten. It was easily one of the most well crafted, immersive, and fun experiences I had all year. Second on my personal top 10.

@CaramelZappa I think Amnesia ruined the Dead Space 2 immersion for me. Although the my biggest worry is how the devs took a F.E.A.R. in the sequel. I just hope they won't go further 'that' way in the third game.

Honestly I think mindset has to do with it a lot. A lot of people go into Dead Space expecting a horror game with shooting, but I'd classify it more as a shooter/action game with horror themes. Expecting it to be horror the way Amnesia is would probably be a let down for anyone.

Personally I haven't played Amnesia, because it doesn't look very fun, and I didn't find the Penumbra games either fun or scary.

And I disagree about them "pulling a F.E.A.R." in the sequel. F.E.A.R. 2 had dumbed down mechanics and weapons, Dead Space 2 build on what was already there and made it better.

I don't know about the top 3, but it definitely would have been on the list.

Looks like LittleBigPlanet 2 is going to get screwed as well because of its early release date.

Game journalists keep pleading with publishers to spread out their releases over the course of the year, and then they weight all of their awards toward games that were released in the holiday crunch.

I completely forgot that YDKJ and M&M:CoH were released this year. Jack was completely worth the purchase price to spend a few evenings introducing my teenage kid and her friends to it. It reminded me of how fresh and funny it was when I first discovered it. Clash of Heroes on the other hand was one of the best downloadable games of the year.

If anything, these lists are reminding me that there are entirely too many great games being made. I don't think there has ever been a year when there are so many games that I wanted to play, and simply don't have the time to even contemplate it. Dead Space 2 is still sitting on my shelf, waiting to be unwrapped.
