@Churrotastic I agree with both of you. I will be super pissed if Skyrimjob or MW3 appear on this list because they will undoubtedly be based solely on their sales numbers.

Dark Souls should be getting way more acknowledgement and praise than it has been and I appreciate Joystiq's stance on it, however I just feel that it should be higher on this opinionated list.

I agree, but we both know it will either be Skyrim, CoD, or Battlefield as #1.

Just the way places like this are I suppose :/.

Because Joystiq has such an extensive history of picking Battlefield and CoD games as their top game of the year right?

2010: Mass Effect 2
2009: Uncharted 2
2008: Fable 2
2007: Portal

Oh wait...

"solely on sales numbers" means a lot of people thought it looked really good and decided to buy it...so it is actually a pretty accurate stick to gauge a game's success....it's like saying that Michael Jordan should not be considered one of the greatest basketball players ever solely because he put up great stats.

well, i think it shouldnt get game of the year because, like all their games (Bethesda), it "breaks" after reaching a certain level. when you make a game thats all about dragons, yet allow the player to literally 1 shot them, that game stops being about dragons and just becomes a modern version of Duck Hunt. and while Duck Hunt was great at the time, at least it used a physical gun as its gimmick to make it cool. Skyrim fans out there: sorry, your game breaks easily and is not in my top 10 of this year. Dark souls for #1 all the way.

Not really. Ad populum or "many believe so, therefore it's true" can never be used to judge the quality of something. I know these are overused examples but Call of Duty, Angry Birds, Bayformers etc. are all extremely popular, I wouldn't call them the pinnacle of their respective genres.

I think most sites will put Skyrim on the top but for me, It's Skyward Sword and Dark Souls based on pure fun factor. 3rd is skyrim for me

I am over 30 hours in, I'm like level 23 or something. There are still plenty of enemies and quests that are difficult for me. If you play enough to get that powerful then maybe you should spend some time with other games or do something more productive. Besides, I'm going to assume you are probably nearing 100 hours based on what you're saying. You're saying that's not a lot of entertainment value?

@Golgo13 Sales numbers were greater because of multiplatform. I dont have (or want) a PS3, especially not this late in the generation of consoles, maybe I'll pick up a PS4 when it launches. Until then I'll play games that show up on PC.

Also, games aren't necessarily just based on gameplay, if availability is to be taken into account, then those 3 games are a lot better, I couldn't find skyrim at any gameshops in the area, so I got it from steam. Worked out great

Just b/c a game is extremely hard or challenging doesn't make it fun. It might be fun for 0.05% of the population, but with those types of numbers don't cry if the game doesn't make GOTY.

You're damn right playing Dark Souls wasn't a fun experience. But that's not why it's here. Not every game needs to give you a good time in order to make it a great game. Dark Souls is better than that.

@teeftwo It's not extremely hard, or hard at all, and the belief that people only like it for the difficulty is absurd.
It is a punishing game. If you screw up, you pay for it.

After finishing Rayman Origins I can safely say that it's a MUCH harder game than Dark Souls.

this video is pretty much what I mean, it applies to Dark too

Dark Souls is an extremely rewarding game, that occasionally has bursts of raw joy thrown in with the crushing horror of crawling through the darkness.

I'll take that over just fun pretty much any day.

I agree with the not being too hard point. It's challenging, but in a way that most games don't present their challenge. In Dark Souls, every enemy, every environment, and every environment+enemy type combination have their own difficulty curve, and they're sometimes fairly steep. What I mean by the environment is you have to learn where it is and isn't safe to fight, the game is notorious for pitfalls (and you have to memorize what you've just walked over so you can safely backstep in combat), and environment+enemy type meaning that enemy A might behave exactly the same in environments A & B, but you have to approach it differently in the 2 environments because the layout doesn't allow you the same strategy in both.

I platinumed Demon's Souls and am working on the one for Dark Souls right now. They were definitely challenging on their first run through each, even Dark Souls gave me a lot of deaths moving into it (I finished my Demon's Souls platinum literally the day before Dark Souls released, and had been playing it pretty constantly for the week leading up to it). I died a lot, simply because while the skills translated over, how to apply those skills was different.

The second runs through both of the games, though, freaking cakewalks. Several bosses haven't even touched me in Dark Souls, which I consider to be the harder of the two, though not necessarily by much (there are a couple difficult-for-the-wrong-reason sections in Dark Souls eg. Capra Demon's room size, Ceaseless Discharge's damage output and such [though Demon's Souls had a world design I felt was unfair too - easiest zones with hardest bosses, hardest zones with easiest bosses, which I bet contributed to its difficulty perception]). The game takes patience and dedication to learn the mechanics and AI behavior, but once you've got that down (not ridiculously easier said than done) the game isn't too bad to get through.

And yeah, it doesn't care that you screwed up. Your fault, deal with it. Better hope you can do what you did last time - and more - on this next attempt.

I also agree with the notion that people don't necessarily like it just because it's hard. It's not fun because it's hard, it's fun and hard. It's a great game. One of my favorites, and definitely among my picks for best of 2011. The soundtrack is amazing too, and fits the game perfectly. I love this team's sound direction.

I'll Gamefly this one, out of pure curiosity and cautiousness. The praise for the game has driven me over the edge with intrigue. It sounds amazing, quite simply. But it's so difficult to tolerate a game that taunts you with a fabulous story but seals that magic away from you--in this case, by difficulty.

The way Griffin poetically glorifies the game, and hearing of the spectacular feeling that you're on a journey is mighty enticing.

@Shadowbender It's a great game if you've got the time and stamina. The first playthrough for me was about 85 hours. There were nights where I played 3-4 hours and only beat a single boss. If you're going to rent it, you will have to invest and commit to this game.

If you're looking for a game with a fabulous story, don't look at Dark Souls.

Yes there's a story there but it will take you having to remember every single element thats even remotely related to anything that the game gives to you approach the depth that you get with most RPGs.

@ZexionArmando It's a difficult game in the sense that it makes you think and actually react; something that a lot of modern games don't do, hence why it's considered hard, at least by today's standards.

@Jenks No, however, people hyped up the difficulty of Dark and Demon's Soul, and the latter wasn't hard. So I fear these people don't know what a real hard game is. GnG is usually the front runner of hard games.

Dark Souls isn't even THAT difficult. I mean, it is difficult, but not to the point that that needs to be the first aspect of the game everyone talks about—I say this as someone who finished Dark Souls soloing every boss, but has never come close to beating a Grand Theft Auto. Dark Souls just doesn't hold your hand, and it takes time to get a feel for it—and it's totally worth the effort.

I'd call it the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night of this generation, except I think it's perhaps even better because the expansive yet cohesive game world and rewarding exploration are accompanied by a healthy challenge. You always want to know what's through that next door or down that next path, and there's a wonderful sense of tension as you know whatever it is can kill you and will if you're careless. It's not flawless (the level design isn't uniformly great, and I think the multiplayer aspect should have been canned entirely), but the end product is easily the best action RPG I've played in years, if not ever.

Thank you! I always said that the "Souls" series was the closest this generation has gotten to a true Castlevania game. Especially Dark Souls. You got a huge open world, stat leveling, breaking walls to reveal secrets, lots of skeletons, and it's more about gameplay than story telling. To me Lords of Shadow didn't feel nearly as close to a Castlevania game as Dark Souls did.
