Even though i admit the game is fun, i don´t really think it ´s THAT good. Also i wish i could know how an idea that has been done before, (launching something to destroy X) could sell this crazy amount of copies.........

Doesn't mean every person who got a cell phone got angry birds. There's also tablets and ipods to account for.

It's generally speaking. Devices with smartphone capabilities and access to their respective markets just so happened to download Angry Birds. While they may phrase it as "smartphones", i'm sure they mean all devices with Angry Birds available. Android, iOS, etc.

I'd be more interested in how many new purchases were made as opposed to how many downloads and redownloads were made on a given day.

@Shadow Hog This. I know I got my fiance a iPad and she downloaded 3 separate free versions on Angry Birds on it to entertain some kids we had over for the holidays. I'm guessing a lot of those downloads weren't paid.

I'm not a hater of Angry birds being a popular trend, but I really hope they do not try to go public like Zynga. It's not necessary.

It's just natural human curiosity that leads people to this game. I asked myself a similar question: How is this game so popular? It must be fun. Indeed, it is a good example of controls for a game on a smart phone, but I quickly learned that it was disgustingly overrated. There's no strategy after the first five levels, just aimlesly throwing birds until you hit all the pigs. It's not fun, it's addicting, but not even a hybrid of the two like we see in Tetris or Picross, it's just addicting. Also, I worked at an amusement park this summer, and the amount of Angry Birds related shit there was so uncalled for. Call me a hipster, but this game sucks.

I'm not going to say it has SRPG or Tower Defense levels of strategy but if all you do is aimlessly fling the birds you won't come close to getti g all the stars or even finishing the game.

I don't understand all the hate & contempt for this game. Is it because of it's popularity? We have the ps3, ios & chrome app on our laptop and there isn't a day that goes by where either myself or my fiancé & two kids don't play it. It's just ... Fun.

It's just such a basic game, that has so much success compared to a masterpiece like Super Meat Boy, that it is upsetting for me. And there is very little strategy, unless you enjoy trial and error until you pinpoint a perfect shot.

And there aren't basic and simple console games that are lauded and praised?

Angry Birds is probably second only to Mario in terms of video game brand recognition. It'll probably surpass it eventually as the most recognizable IP globally in the video game arena. It's a powerful brand. I can only imagine how many angry bird phone cases, plushies & other memorabilia were given as gifts.

@Johnnynumber5 is powered by cell The people who play Angry Birds aren't the types who go to preorder games, read up on games they're excited about or even see them as a form of media. They're the type of market who will happily hop onto the next hot IP and would probably leave Angry Birds to the wayside. I don't know if it has the same longevity as other brands. Any attempt to make further Angry Birds games beyond making new levels would result in significantly less sales.

As Pachter said, Rovio need to prove there's more gas in the tank than one big hit before seriously thinking of going public, or at least communicate a credible growth plan and future products. Their big question mark is sustainability.

Angry Birds came up in conversation at every family gathering on Christmas. Some family members were treating it like a new thing. "OMG, I just got a smartphone! Have any of you heard of Angry Birds?"

I remember people going "holy crap this AYBABTU thing is hilarious" for years. Think positive, the brand has some legs.

Angry Birds is obviously the poster child of the smartphone gaming
"phenomenon." I really would like to know what else has made it big though. Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, that doodle platform game and sometimes Cut the Rope seems to be the only titles I ever hear about. If there are other titles what are they, and why haven't they gotten as much media coverage as the Birds?

Maybe I'm just in the minority, but it seems that retail presence goes a long way to make more than 1 or 2 smash hits relevant in a platform's ecosystem.

That "Where's My Water?" one is on the up n up. Doodle Jump has been around for a long while but nobody seems to notice it much.

I don't know. My Mother-In-Law knew about Doodle Jump and recommended it to me a while ago. I know in the App Store and WP Marketplace, its consistently a top seller. Not Angry Birds level. But it has it place in the mobile gaming psyche

Wow. Rovio really managed to hit a sweet spot with marketing and hype, didn't they? People get a smart device for Christmas, and one of their first purchases is this game.

Not a comment on the quality of the game in general; I have it myself, and it's an OK time-waster. But Rovio has managed to create a franchise that has Mario-like associations with its platform(s) of choice. That's damned impressive, whatever your take on casual smartphone gaming may be.
