It was a foregone conclusion that we'd never play the announced Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMOs from developer Multiverse, but the closure of the studio makes that all but certain.
The company actually ceased operations in early December, with a post on its website noting the studio closed due to a lack of funding after it was unable to achieve profitability with the Multiverse platform.
The Multiverse platform was used as "proof of concept" for Facebook titles Battle, Team Battle and Battle: Realms at War. The platform was also used for McDonalds and Coca-Cola web games.
Our condolences go out to Browncoats and followers of the Scooby Gang.

I love both series, but I'm not sure I'd play games in those universes.

Yeah I know what you mean. I never got into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I can see a rather large problem with any game based on the Firefly universe. The show was only on for a season and so it doesn't have a lot of lore associated with it. The movie added a little bit of lore but mostly it was meant to wrap up the loose ends of the tv show. Anyone trying to make a firefly mmo better have help from the original creator or the fans of the show will get pissed. Long story short, it's not worth it, people are too protective of the IP.
Regardless of whether I'd play it or not, it's always sad to see a studio close down.

Not a lot of lore? There was a Matrix MMO and that was just 3 films (with a combined run time less than Serenity+FireFly). EverQuest had zero lore before there was an MMO. The beauty of a game is you can make lore. Plus Firefly already has a tabletop RPG, series of comics, and an open world enough to create as much as you'd want. It's a blank slate ready to build. You have the history of China being the major superpower alongside the US prior to space exploration, terraformed planets without heavy discription, a general tone for the world (western in space), an evil empire for the bad guy, and the show's main focus is around being mercenaries. What about that DOESN'T translate into good MMO?

Did anyone actually expect either of these games to launch? While I'd love to see more ANYTHING in the Firefly universe I knew that game would never see the light of day.

Someone really thought a Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO was a good idea? All those 1 people?

I miss Buffy. I kept hoping they would make a movie based off the series (not the movie the series was based on, lol) but it just never happened :(

If the surprise is the one I'm thinking, it caused me to stop reading both characters' eponymous comics. So yeah, not for everyone.

"Continue the story" is a phrase I would use loosely. They take a drastic change in tone from the show and they felt way underproduced and thought out compared to the show. I'm sure it has Joss' official stamp of approval, but as someone who loved the show I had to force myself to read it. It had a few good issues (I liked the first Faith story)... The most of it was fanfic'y.

People need to stop trying to revive Firefly. Be glad you got a movie and move on.

I'm ok with Firefly being over if that makes sense?
I agree with the people that say it would have got worse (Like SCRUBS) and not been remembered as fondly.
Though more would be nice :p
Btw thanks for telling me the name of the song in that Transformers Trailer, brought it, thought about buying the EP but I had a listen and nothing else from it really caught me like that track.

I just think it's done. and It's just been too long and the only people that care have expectations that can't be reached. The same goes for Arrested development.
No problem. Maynard is a great singer but that band really only has a few good songs. Rev 22:20 is a good one

Now our only hope is that Netflix get hold of the license and help make Firefly series 2 a reality. Like Arrested Development.
While the budget would be much higher, it's still a (very, very slim) possibility.

Except Whedon retaining the rights and saying he would never continue the story through film or TV puts a giant stop to that. Nathan Fillion tried to buy the rights at one point but Whedon is pretty determined to not revive it at this point.

Wow, what's wrong with you? That's like saying that you don't like Frank Lloyd Wright and so you're happy the housing market has taken a huge hit which affects millions of people through the unemployment of contractors.
These people that were working on this project didn't choose to work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly mmos, they were just looking for work. So, congratulations on being a dick.

There is a fair amount of information out there about the 'Verse it could make for a compelling setting if done right. You could set it in the Indipendance War or in the frontier period afterwards both would work. In a way this is good it gets the product out of the hands of incompetents and maybe something good can come of it. (Man I would so elevator pitch Joss on this if I ever met him.)

This is great news, now the Firefly IP can go into the hands of a more capable studio. And skip the whole MMO crap - give us a brand new adventure in that universe with all the original cast members. You know all the cast will return for voice overs (some of them have said they'd return for another movie/show). An adventure post "Serenity" would be prime - complete with "flashbacks" to include some of the cast who died in Serenity.
I'm thinking Naughty Dog would probably be the best studio for this, imagine "Uncharted" with a "Firefly" coat of paint... works perfect :)

I would take a good quality S8-S9-comics Buffy mmorpg over 99% of mmos out there right now.
Hell the transition from S8 to S9 could begranded and more realistic than WoW:Cataclysm was considering the scale, not to mention gameplay changes and alterations that would happen(case in point: magic, vampires, etc)
Buffyverse has a HUGE amount of lore to incorporate and work upon and it would be a hell of amazing mmo or rpg, although Whedon should be involved in dialogue.
Firefly on other hand would make an awesome sandbox.

Makes me sad, but it's just as well. If I ever got the chance to play either of those MMOs, it would only end in bankruptcy, unemployment and divorce for me.
On the upshot, I'd be so jacked it, I probably wouldn't care. But still, it's probably for the best.

Firefly is one of the best sci-fi shows ever made..
That said, I'm happy this will never be an MMO..
Just stop with the movie to game remakes ffs.

Crisis Averted! The shows deserve to continue somehow, but the multiverse platform was never, sadly, impressive.
