but that means that there isn't room for Uncharted 3, Skyrim, AND Skyward Sword, all 3 of which are deserving of this list, so we have a problem here.

There isn't a problem. These are thier top picks. If you don't like it make your own list. It will mean the same amount this one does.

Making our own lists won't mean the same thing.

This is a very popular gaming blog that gets a lot of attention and effects sales of games, the likelihood of getting sequels, etc. etc.

Somebodys opinion doesn't mean more because more people read it.

People get so crazy over lists. These are not offical, they are just the opinions of this site. People should realize that thier opinions means just as much and calm the F down.

You know what is really crazy, we did not see any of those games in people's "Other top picks". This means, that two of those three games were most likely not even in people's top 15.

To quote Joey Lawrence, "Whoa!"

The problem with your argument, though, is that publishers will put "Game of the Year" and "Top 10" stickers on their boxes, and list how many awards a game has won on the back. These sorts of GOTY and Top 10 lists on media sites definitely have an impact on the industry, far more than someone commenting on a web site has. To deny that is just ... denial.

@MisterEFQ Firstly, it's not true that all opinions (and therefore "Top 10" lists) mean as much as each other. Some opinions are far better justified than other. Or perhaps you think Hitler's opinion that the Jew's should be killed is worth as much as any other (actually, that's a trick question, but as long as it gets you thinking...)? For example, one factor that has affected this list is the number of Joystiq writers who have even played the games in question (how many played Skyrim? Compare that to how many played Skyward Sword), which takes away from the idea that this is a list of best games rather than most played.
Secondly, even if we leave aside how well justified the opinions are, there's the simple fact that some people's opinions will have a greater influence than others' (e.g. a major gaming blog's versus those of a poster on that blog). It's entirely rational to be agitated by an influential source not promoting something you like. It continues to amaze me that people can't see this.

How many Game of The Years have you seen within one gaming year? I'm guessing at least 5 if not more.

Also, how many games have you seen with a quote from Joystiq on it? Probably none.

Honestly, I think they might actually have some sort of tie with Skyrim and Skyward Sword. However, I personally don't have Uncharted 3 in my top 10. I'm not sure if they do either, though not having it in any of the 'Best of the Rest' picks does seem odd as I would have put it there.

I doubt that Skyward Sword is getting it.
At first, critics were loving it but then it set in with a few that the game does absolutely nothing but belittle the Zelda formula.
A lot of fans felt it too.

Hell, it was such as shock that not even GT - the console favoring and Nintendo biggots of them all - didn't even include it in their ~nominations~.

I think Uncharted 3 will get and deserves the award all things considered.
Skyrim deserves it too, don't get me wrong. Not sure why Portal 2 is THAT high on the list over Skyrim.

SO who wins between Uncharted 3, Zelda: Skyward Sword and Skyrim. The main vote would be Skyrim obviously, but how do you leave those other two out, especially Zelda out of any top 10?

I say we substitute the #9 and 10 games for the other two who aren't picked #1...

There seems to be a fair share of hate for this game from certain places, but I absolutely love this game. This is easily the funniest and best voiced game I've ever played and I've been gaming over 20 years. Some people complain about the length, but it's longer than the original and if it took 30+ hours I think the charm would begin to wear off. My only issue was the TF2-esque store, but since that was purely cosmetic it didn't really matter. The co-op was also extremely fun with friends. Is there anything more satisfying than getting a friend crushed or killed because you moved your portal? I think not. I'm Cave Johnson, we're done here. (Sorry I felt compelled to post that)

Well deserved, a masterpiece. Could have been #1 if it wasn't up against Skyrim (It can't be any other game at #1, surely?).

Also I'm sure that co-op tested more than a few friendships... especially when trying to get some of the trickier achievements. Great fun though.

I can't think of a video game in the history of the medium with such clever writing. The fact that it plays so well is icing on the...dare I say it...cake.

If every game had a subtle, nuanced story like Portal 2, then guys like me would have nothing to complain about!

I can't argue with this. Skyward Sword and Uncharted probably suffer from being too samey. I personally would have included Mario 3D Land, I think that game is terrificly addictive, but this is a solid list.

@Hoops Skyward Sword isn't just too samey. It's too samey with a belittle attached to it too. It condescends what Zelda normally is about.

At least Uncharted 3 had not only a very different story and pacing to it than previous games, but it had pretty different settings from the previous game that once again affects gameplay in very unique ways. What game developer seriously builds an entire ocean simulator for one part of their game? That's just how Naughty Dog rolls, and it shows immensely.

Another list with Skyrim at the top, huh? I guess its a result of me not being much of a fantasy fan, but seems like a lot of people REALLY like that game while I have little interest.

Unless Joystiq surprises everyone and puts "Ghost Trick" as number one. That's my favorite game of 2011.

Just checked and Skyward Sword was not even on any "Best of the rest lists" which is completely insane.

Maybe there will be a tie for number one between Skyward Sword and Skyrim.
