"We're almost done with Diablo 3 "

Nope, don't believe it for a second. XD Will only believe it when I am actually playing it.

A free copy of Diablo would be a fitting celebration of it's 15 year anniversary...

REMEMBER:
Dying to Duriel in Act 2?

YES. And I never want to do so again. Hated that guy so much.

They added a preload to his chamber because originally, the game would load it as soon as you entered it, and the loading, even on a fast machine, would usually be too long to actually be able to fight him. You were dead by the time it loaded.

When you played on the closed Battle.net servers, when you went into his chamber, the game was still technically running and he attacked you. By the time the load screen was over, you were dead.

Wow. I'm surprised Blizzard released it like that, what with their track record of testing and making sure a game works before it is released.
How did anyone manage to defeat him?

It's not that it always happened. It just happened A LOT.

Having played D2 through virtually every patching stage, it's fun for dorky me to scroll through the patch notes bottom to top and reminisce.

Like darkinchworm said you didn't always get killed before the game loaded, but it also helped to be playing co-op. My friends and I would always stagger our entry into the boss chamber. The first guy would sometimes die, but the guys after got a clean entry because Duriel would be busy with the first guy.

There was the time they decided to adjust the display of the health/mana globes. Potions show the globes filling slowly, but hits showed it emptying immediately. They decided to "make it look nicer" by making the globes drain slowly to the level. What ended up happening was several hits in a row could kill you, and there was still health showing on the globe. The next patch they changed it. The hits are now shown immediately, but the globe still shows the draining animation.

By golly its hard (at least for me) to believe it was just 15 years ago when I was in the 8th grade playing Diablo religiously when I got home from school. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays going to Illusions Games only to play my character I made in Diablo in AD&D.

*sighs* I miss those good ol days before damn jobs, cars, and responsibilities got in the way. Curses and drats *shakes his fist*

I spent entire summers farming for items and doing cow runs. Summers. And pretty much any time available outside of school, given that I grew up in a bottom-of-the-barrel community in which it wasn't tough at all to avoid homework at home (garbage education).

The best part is that 1996 was 16 years ago.

Well, the first game was released in December '96. New Year's Eve, even, if I'm not mistaken. So close enough.

15 year anniversaries usually involve looking back the the long history of the game. Now I'm all for quality over quantity but Blizzard. 2 games in 15 years is kind of sad.

Amazing they've only been able to release 1 further edition of Diablo in 15 years. I've decided that Blizzard are lazy, not talented.

@LordBlackass

Time for some history.

Blizzard used to be comprised of two companies. Blizzard, and Blizzard North. Blizzard did WarCraft and StarCraft. Blizzard North did Diablo.

After the v1.11 patch for Diablo 2, Blizzard decided to consolidate the two companies. A good number of the employees were let go. The remaining ones had the option to join Blizzard.

When they eventually decided to make another Diablo, they had an entire prototype built, but scratched it, because it wasn't fun.

They did this a few times. Had entire concepts of games built up, a few even went to the prototype stage, but they just didn't feel fun, so they scrapped it, and started over again.

Now, any other company would have said !@#$ it, and gone with the first thing, and released it anyway, Blizzard isn't like that. They wanted a game that was worth making.

So next time some halfassed sequel gets released where they change the number on the box, change the names, and slightly change the storyline, remember there is still real talent in the world, and that those halfassed sequels are the real lazy people.
