Were you thoroughly enraged when 2K Games announced intentions to first-person shooter-ize your favorite strategy game series, XCOM? Here's some potentially good (and calming) news: Civilization developer Firaxis Games is currently working on another totally new XCOM game, called XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Unlike 2K Marin's game (simply called XCOM), this one falls under the strategy genre that popularized the franchise to begin with.
Despite the strategy angle, the game is planned for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC for this fall. More info will be revealed in this month's issue of Game Informer, per the cover reveal. We'd also like to bet right now that the Firaxis title arrives before the 2K Marin one. It's a race!
It's worth noting that the first XCOM was subtitled "Enemy Unknown," though no indication is given that it's a remake of the original title. We've reached out to Firaxis and 2K all the same, but for now we're presuming it's little more than a nod to the original title.

@TheChezDispenser Honestly, there's a lot of advancements and changes that can probably be made to the "build-up-and-army-and-take-it-on-missions" type of strategy game. The genre's just been dead to so long. It would be a shame if this was just a souped-up version of the original, but I'm hoping they take it in interesting new directions.

You know I'm actually kind of excited for the game? I just can't stand people who get pretentious about pressing ****ing buttons, like 90% of the people in this comment thread.

The FPS is a disgusting mess that has nothing to do with the X-Com universe.

@YouAintFatYouAintNotin As a serious answer, it looks like it's two separate reboots of the same series.

"Despite the strategy angle" ... Turn based strategy should work fine on consoles, RTSs are the problematic ones. Still, this news have me jumping outta joy! Hope to hear some of the Terror from the Deep tunes...they were genuinely creepy.

@baddates77 I'm on the same boat, I didn't even know UFO: Enemy Unknown was on 5.25.

Lets hope someone in game development takes note and whilst Starbreeze Studios is remaking Syndicate, someone remakes the original Bullfrog Syndicateor Syndicate Wars!

Sid has been great with remakes of classic games so there is cause for optimism. However, the console development wakes me wary.
If there is any semblance of tactical combat and base building like the original than it could be a lot of fun.
It really is unbelievable how many horrible X-Com games there have been since UFO Defense. They all flop commercially as well. This new FPS one will be in the bargain bin after two weeks.

Is there a particularly negative preview out there about XCOM's FPS game or something? Because otherwise an awful lot of people are judging the game exclusively because it's not what they want, which is downright bitchy.
