Starhawk dev rethinking DLC strategy: It 'might be surprising'
37
Starhawk will enter public beta soon in North America, Europe, Japan, Korea and Latin America, senior produer Harvard Bonin tells Respawn Action. The closed beta ended Jan. 3 and Bonin says the mix of veteran Warhawk and new players caught a lot of unsurprising bugs and balance issues, and that update 1.2 will fix a lot of these.
There are plans for "a bunch of" free DLC that "might be surprising," Bonin says, although he adds that he'd be "happy to take your money" for some of the planned content. "We rethought our DLC strategy and we'll reveal more about it as we get closer to release," he says.
More information on the Starhawk public beta will come "very soon," Bonin says, and the game will release "when it's damn good and ready."

Hope this game is good. I will try the public beta first. Transforming ships are always awesome.

I loved the way they supported Warhawk both paid and free DLC.
But I didn't enjoy the Starhawk Beta that much. I guess I was expecting more Warhawk but it's not Warhawk.
Not sure if I will buy it now. It is fun but it has a bunch of issues like the 5 ft knife lunge. Since it is a Beta and the Public Beta one is starting soon I hope it will get better and it will sway me to a purchase.

I enjoyed the beta, but I'll definitely concede the pre-canned knife lunge was ridiculous. The damage radius for running over players with the Razorback needs to be nerfed.
Other than that and a few other details, I really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how well and seamless the Build & Battle system was. I just hope that the 32-structure limit is more an arbitrary number that can be increased than some processing limitations, as creating (and destroying) structures was incredible.
Lastly, if you were in the private beta, don't delete the game off your HD, or else you will need to scrounge up a new beta invitation code to join the public beta. Otherwise, all private beta participants will automatically roll into the public beta.

@DustbinK The jet-pack felt off(and only went up fast), the Hawks were weak, and you couldn't jump out in mid air.
But that's what betas are for; to tweak

Off the top of my head, they did add add the wrench and healing gas mine thing for free, as well as a ton of plane skins. Nothing else comes to mind though.

@BlazeKing The one of the earlier patches added a lot of new layouts to existing maps and the 1.4 patch added two new game modes (Hero and Collection) and two new weapons (the wrench and biofield). It's free DLC, only they force you to download it via the patch. Honestly I don't understand why developers will create free DLC but place it on the store.

The knife lunge felt like what can only be described as dirty. I much prefer the stealth ability of the original knife. Also, for being a sequel to Warhawk the flight controls felt like a step back from Warhawk. I really miss the hover mode and the ridiculous agility of the planes. There just wasn't enough hawk in Starhawk. At least not the beta. I never got the feeling of awesome aerial combat that defined the original. The building aspect is well implemented and fun. The transforming hawks are a good addition. As someone who painfully earned the rank of general, I thankfully welcome the new scoring system. The ground game in Starhawk beta feels decent with a few tweaks needed like the jeep roadkill damage. I'm hoping for more weapons though.

It's a beta, sure, but the phrasing made me do a double-take for some reason. So I peeked at the article and found this:
"There was nothing that wasn't surprising and we've been able to address a lot of this stuff."
Surprise! I guess.

This game is really good! I was on the private beta, I didn't noticed any bugs, just had fun. ^^
Hope everyone has a chance to play it, it's very addictive. It improves from Warhawk, and it's really fun.

I tried the beta for a few days, but it just feels too dated and amateurish for me to get too much entertainment out of it. It feels a lot like the old CnC Renegade game for PC. Not a bad thing if I was playing it a decade ago.

Agreed. Starhawk beta was pretty crappy. Flop game

Funny because I thought Starhawk was one of the better games of the year. And it's not even finished. Here in the past couple years I have a hard time sitting and playing a game for more than a couple hours at a time. I played Starhawk for like 4 hours when I got it. I'm not going to sit and analyze all the good and bad things about it. All I know is that I really enjoyed it.

@HaVoK308 I see where you're coming from, but I believe that C&C Renegade was ahead of it's time, not that Starhawk is behind them. There aren't many games like this and I, for one, am very excited to purchase this arcade/strategy/action game. :D

Heres a dlc strategy: no dlc because you'll include everything on the disc. Just saying

I'm looking forward to this but I'm with the developer on one thing - I'll buy this when I'm damn good and ready to after I know it's bug free.

I loved the crap out of Warhawk. I feel bad that they stripped out so much of what made that game so great. Suppose I'll have to wait for Warhawk 2, if it ever comes.

Starhawk was weird just plain weird. Didn't have that same wanting to play it again and again like warhawk.

I wanted to like Warhawk. There seemed to be a fine line between those who could fly, and those who couldn't. And by fly, I mean stop and start erratically like a mosquito with missiles. I had these visions of flying around in VTOL aircraft that behaved semi-realistically, where there's an amount of inertia to your jet. What I experienced was a kind of FPS in the air that sorta felt like flying. I also got owned pretty badly on most servers. Even if I had managed to master the stop on a dime and go flight style, I wouldn't have cared for it.
I'm hoping that Starhawk doesn't tread down this same path, but figured it would. However, it seems like some Warhawk fans aren't happy with Starhawk, and I wonder if this has anything to do with changes (if any) in how fighters maneuver?
On the subject of DLC, if it's a multiplayer game, the DLC must be free if it affects gameplay at all, e.g. maps, expansions, etc. Otherwise I tend to play a game until paid DLC comes out and disrupts the community (I dropped Killzone 3 like a rock once map packs came out). DLC that affects things like how a player looks, sure, charge for that.
