Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward's creative strategist and face of the Call of Duty series, is excellent at his job, in that he knows how not to answer questions directly. It's a skill set shared by all variety of politicians, and not one prized among journalists. Why bother explaining this? Because when I asked Bowling about holiday sales of his studio's latest game, Modern Warfare 3, I wasn't surprised when he gave the company line ("I don't have any numbers I can share with you"), though he did allow, "I'm happy." Presumably we'll find out just how happy Bowling is when last month's NPDs arrive in a couple weeks.
Rather than push the unspeakable, I turned my attention to more open topics, such as Modern Warfare 3's finale wrapping up the story of series leads John "Soap" MacTavish and Captain John Price. "Our goal with Modern Warfare 3 was definitely to get some closure on the story that we started with Call of Duty 4, and I think we've achieved that," Bowling said. While he wouldn't put a definitive end to their inclusion in the series, he did admit that MW3's campaign was intended as closure on the duo's story.
That said, Bowling doesn't want to say "never" to the concept of either character reappearing in future CoD entries. "I never like to speak in definites when it comes to story design, because you never wanna not have an opening or an out," he told me. And hey, if Danny Trejo can appear as a DLC character, anything could happen, right?

Here's an idea: can we get a post that's NOT about MW3? I think 3 in a row is far more than enough...

"...never wanna not have an opening or out,"
Seeing as speaking is his JOB, you figure he would have a decent grasp on grammar.

@CHEF BOYaR G Yeah, dude! You sure pointed out that double negative in what I'm sure was a formal statement, and not just a candid interview! His lack of proper grammar clearly demonstrates that CoD SUCKS! GO SKYRIM! WOO!

why do you assume that he's a fan of Skyrim? he didn't even say he dislikes Call of Duty, but was instead simply being a grammar Nazi. that sort of thing is commonplace on the internet.
i agree that the CoD hate bandwagon is a little annoying now, but the defenders of CoD are even more so. what are you defending? and why? it's like you've sworn your allegiance to a videogame franchise that is, for lack of a better word, being milked to death. that's not an opinion, it's a fact. how anyone can support such a tactic is beyond me. i mean, haven't we already seen how this turns out? does no one remember Guitar Hero? maybe not...

@Liquidfingers I haven't "sworn my allegiance" to anything. I'm just tired of how anything pro-Skyrim and/or anti-Call of Duty (see the comment below us) gets applauded. Or how further down there's a comment from eat it that basically just says, "Hey, Call of Duty's story may not be high art, but neither are most other games. At least it's engaging," which is a pretty spot-on assessment, and he gets downvoted. It's dumb. People just like to complain about popular things. Modern Warfare 3 isn't the most original game out there, but it's still really good.

@whatisdelicious Please explain what was anti cod or pro skyrim. Do you hate that game just because its popular? And no one likes eat its comment because everyone disagrees. Compared to other games it is confusing boring and linear. But hey thats my opinion, and thats what the like and dislikes are for, YOUR OPINION. Also people don't like to complain about popular things, cod 4 no one complained, cod 5 a few people complained of it being like a world war mod of cod 4. and after every cod it had more and more people complaining about how much the same it was until we got mw3 and everyone noticed.

I never thought I'd see the day where an Elder Scrolls game would outsell and CoD game... especially during the steam holiday sale.
Happy or not, CoD's inability to top Skyrim restores a little bit of my faith in the gaming community.

@PR0F3TA Don't bother questioning it. For them, Call of Duty is evil and represents all that is bad in the world, and Skyrim is amazing and humanitarian and benevolent. Must be nice living in a world like that.

@whatisdelicious Yes lets praise the cash cow instead of the game that seemed like it would never be popular 7-8 years ago

I was expecting Price to pass away, not Soap. Soap's death seemed stupid, considering all the work you had to go to save his life and get him safely extracted at the beginning of the game.

I agree, that pissed me off and kind of ruined it, considering in the previous games you played AS Soap the majority of the time.

I still believe call of duty 2 and cod4 had the best campain in the cod series, but i did enjoy the closure of soap and price in mw3.

You know what would have been awesome? If we could have closed Soap's story AS Soap! It would have had much more of an impact instead of forcing me to play as some random Russian asshole they managed to retcon into the timeline.
Then again, getting mad at Call of Duty for screwing up story beats is like complaining to McDonalds that your food was nasty. They know, they just don't give a shit.

@eat it
Maybe I'm just thick then because I played through the campaigns of the last 3 CoD games and could not tell you what in the hell happened other than, we are in (random location) and shit is blowing up so follow that guy with the big "FOLLOW" above his head and shoot things until you hit a load screen where something something Makarov (or Rheznov.) Also, turrets.
I play CoD games primarily for the ultra responsive shooting controls, the story is a distant 2nd. Multiplayer is a nonexistant 3rd at this point.

So what happens to Price at the end as the Dubai police are closing in on him? Hopefully Nikolai gets there in time.

I hope he realises that lag compensation sucks, and is killing this game.Being punished for having a good connection is total horses**t.And whoever designed the early multiplayer maps wants sacking as they suck apart from about five, and they are a campers paradise. And superquick scoping is a frigging joke, shame on you Bowling for not fixing that!

The "story" to MW3 was terrible....
The fact they put some random new character in who they reveal was at several of the important points of the Modern Warfare series just so you have some emotional connection to him was so blehch and then he dies at the end too just emphasize how worthless his addition was....
MODERN WARFARE SERIES = WATCH VIRTUAL PEOPLE DIE AND FEEL EMOTIONAL ABOUT IT

Count how many times they mention "Season of Content" and be afraid. Subscription-based gaming is coming, If you guys thought that some companies abused us in terms of what they consider to be DLC, just you wait until Black ops 2 comes out at the initial cost of $30 + $15 bucks a month. This is the direction in which things are heading, the games industry is preparing to screw over all of their customers.

While I am sure this sold really well over the holidays I have had a feeling (based on my previously CoD crazed friend's reactions) that this year was not as...well...crazed. It was my first year not going to a midnight release for a CoD game in a long time. While I am still a fan of the series, I think it might be fading a bit.
