@ColorblindMonk In 5 months, I'll be saying the opposite.

At least that's what Google's been saying.

Not really. You can grab the free game and play to your heart's content. There are no walls you have to pay to get around or level caps or anything like that. You can get the game, which includes the Council team, and play as much as you like. It is ad-supported, just so you know, but that's how the "FREE" bit works out. ;)

Of the items you can purchase, they're almost entirely cosmetic - team color changes, taunts, and avatars. You can buy additional Teams to play with. Think of them like little expansion packs. Right now, we've got the Dark Elves available for purchase. New teams have their own unique art and animations, abilities, and so on, but we do a lot of work to balance the teams so that you can't pay to win. It's just about offering up some new and interesting game mechanics for players who want more strategic options.

Agreed. I'm still gonna give this a shot.
But I'd rated pay $2-5 for a good iOS game as be done with it, rather than get it for free and then find out the parts that make it fun are a dollar a piece

Not only that, but you have to register just to play the damned game.

Disclaimer: I work for Robot Entertainment. I just wanted to jump in and clarify a few things.

The core Hero Academy game includes the Council team, and that's all you need to be competitive and have fun in the game. I'm playing against a ton of players right now who are only using the free version of the app. We do sell a handful of cosmetic items like avatars, animated taunts, and a team color-pallete, but none of those are required to play.

The gameplay elements we sell are Teams. Think of them like little expansion packs. The first one available is the Dark Elves, and that team has it's own unique look, spells, abilities, etc. They're a lot of fun if you're looking to mix up your play styles, but they're well-balanced with the Council, and we're working to ensure that any future teams we release will be similarly balanced. Buying even a single Team (beyond the Council) also gets rid of the ads in the app.

And that's it. We're not asking you to pay for a certain number of turns or secret advantages or anything like that. You can play completely free, or you can pick up some cool expansion teams to mix up the gameplay if you want.

I tried it out today... registration just means "put in an email address." You can do it in-app and you don't even have to "confirm" the registration via email.

Great game! Finally a good alternative to Words With Friends.

To everyone complaining about registration, it's literally just entering in your email/nickname so your friends know who to send game invites to. Quick and simple.

To everyone complaining about the in app purchases, you do realize game development takes a lot of time and money? God forbid you pay 99 cents to support the developer so they can continue to make games. Even if you can't afford that, you can play the game (which includes all of "the parts that make it fun") for free with occasional ads.

I hope it comes out for Android because all of my friends use Android devices except me, and I would like to play this game with them.

@iSamurai

We're looking into an Android version, but as usual with these type of things, we don't have anything to announce at the moment.

This game is amazing. It's like an asynchronous multiplayer version of Fire Emblem, where units, gear, and spells exist as tiles in your hand. You have 5 action points you can spend each turn, which you can use to deploy a unit, move, attack, cast a spell, or equip a unit.

The art style looks fantastic, the UI is slick (and familiar to anyone who's played words with friends), and the gameplay is incredibly engaging.

Given the entry price of free, this is a game everyone should own.

After starting about 12 random games, I cant seem to find anyone who will continue playing. It seems there might be a big learning curve or something where people start to play, have a few units die and then they quit. I wonder if there's a timeout for not playing a turn in so many days that it will stop the game and give the person who was waiting to play the win. By the way, my name in the game is the same that's on this site, so lets play?
