Kaz Hirai, Sony's... um, let's just call him "Mega EXEC" for now, said the company will not announce the PlayStation 4 at this year's E3. The Wall Street Journal reports Hirai is sticking to the 10-year life cycle for the PlayStation 3 and currently sees no need to replace it.
"Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Hirai said at a CES roundtable with press, referring to statements made by Andrew House that there's no PS4 plan for E3.
Meanwhile, over at the other console manufacturers: Whispers of an Xbox tease at CES never occurred, with current chatter of the next console's details being "rumor and speculation." Nintendo will certainly go big at E3 this year with the Wii U, after revealing the hardware at the prior show, and getting ready for the console's launch later this year.

at this point, they are probably in full preproduction with beta kits all around.
The PSvita, for example, was in the hands of developers some two years before announcement.

Not really. Sony really screwed up when they developed a proprietary driven consul.
The system is based on a cell processor graphics generation that few companies want to deal with, and I guarantee the next generation is still going to be more popularly card based because thats what companies favor, on top of that they are now having to buy their cell processors from Toshiba because they dumped all their factories.
Their games are required to be on Blu ray, which costs the distributors more due to licensing and printing costs, and they have to eat it to keep their games competitively priced with the 360.
The launch was a complete botch up, most owners bought more Blu ray movies than games during the first year or so due to nothing good being on the consul, which did save Blu ray for all the good it did, seeing optical media is dying as quickly as predicted before the HD media war.
Launching last just meant they were behind the curve from the start, by the time they do catch up to the 360, because the Wii is right out, Microsoft will probably be geared up for the next consul, and they will be in the same place they are now.

Sounds good to me. Wait a couple of years, market the PS3 as the cheap alternative to Wii U and next Xbox, and then...BANG...release one console to rule them all.

I'm very doubtful of anything from either Sony or Microsoft at E3 other than new current system announcements. That doesn't mean they aren't working on a follow up consul, it just means they feel there is still more blood to be sapped from the current generation.

I got my 360 at launch in 2005. It will be 7 years this fall. If Sony doesn't launch something their going to miss out on a huge chunk of their target audience. 7 years is more than enough time for a hardware refresh. If not I'm done with consoles, I'll build a new PC for Windows 8 instead.

@Anticrawl 7 years on the 360...means 6 for the PS3....they will be fine for another year...especially with the PS3 soon hitting the $200 sweet spot...

I wasn't expecting it until next year anyways....so an announcement at E3 next year with a global launch next August would be possible. Tho When is the last time they announced a console at E3 and did a global release in the same year?

I feel as though my Xbox 360 and PS3 are just getting warmed up. For the first time in console history, I would be more than happy to wait another few years for new consoles. As for the Wii U, well, not a fan.

In my opinion yes and no. When the original XBOX launched late in the game, Sony's PS2 held the market. Admittedly this was later learned to be their Trojan horse to break the 360 into the market, but launching early was a necessity for the 360 in a market held by Sony and Nintendo. They could be seen as next gen while the others couldn't make that claim. However when the PS3 launched, although sporting nice next gen features it launched into the game far too late bringing nothing new to the game that the competition couldn't match in one way or another outside of their Blu-ray player. The fact that the 360 came out first, is showing it's age, and still manages to stay on top in sales (according to joystiq articles mind you) seems to indicate they are marketing better at every turn than Sony has in this gen. I honestly think that if Sony waits this next gen, and prepares a proper marketing onslaught aimed at the right people, they can match the competition at the least, and at their best innovate and trump everything they bring to the game. Let's face it, like it or not today's consoles have to do more than just game. They need to multiple-task. Be that playing music, watching movies, or surfing YouTube or Facebook. Hardcore gamers may have no use for these things, but hardcore gamers are no longer the only fish in this next gen ocean.

I can totally live with that. There is no need to run the next PS console to market. Only new console on the table is the Wii U, and lets be honest...that is basically Nintendo playing catch up to the current times. Even if the specs on paper edge out the PS3 and X360, the Wii U is just entering the league where the PS3 and X360 have being playing on from day one.

Couldn't agree more. I was once a Nintendo fan, still do root for them on the side, but their HD console is most definitely only playing catch up. The only thing they are innovating so far is that tablet controller and I am certain that anything MS or Sony brings next gen will without a doubt take that into account in some form or another should tablet controllers/gaming prove a battle ground next gen.

I think this is the best way for Sony to go, the Vita hasn't really taken off in Japan yet, and I honestly think with the current economic climate they'd have a similar situation on their hands were they to release the PS4 too soon. I say kick back and see how the Wii U does before doing anything drastic, Sony isn't exactly in a good place financially as it is, and I don't think they could really support both the Vita and a new console, at least until the Vita takes off, plus the Wii U will be a good measure of how new hardware will sell, especially if you take in to account a lot of the people who bought Wiis were casual gamers and I think you'll have a bit harder time convincing them that they need to upgrade their hardware to keep playing Wii Sports and Wii Fit.
Posted: Jan 11th 2012 10:58AM nerdydesi1 said
@Nionel Most consoles have a rough head-start. I give them at least a year before truly passing judgement. The PS2, 360 and PS3 didn't really start getting killer games until about a year after their launch, eg. Metal Gear Solid 2, Gears of War, Uncharted, etc.

I kind of expected this for Playstation. They don't need to announce PS4 yet. The potential of the PS3 hasn't even been completely realized yet.
As for Microsoft, I am interested in finding out more about the new system.
I'm hoping Wii-U blows me away. I want to proudly say "I play my Wii-U just as much as my PS3" or something like that. I don't want something subpar. I want something that is capable of making XBox's new console obsolete before it's even announced. (Hopes too high? probably). Anyway, yeah, I'm hoping Nintendo is not still two steps behind it's competitors. I hope it's either right up there with them, or a step ahead.

As awesome as that sounds and as much as I enjoy my ps3, I feel that would just end up like the current gen, where Microsoft jumps the gun as a business tactic and Sony gets left in the dust and bashed/scoffed at when it goes to release its system.
Thus we get left with the Xbox360 as an industry standard for consoles and multiplatform games will never reach the peak performance they can take if both systems were on the level of PS3.
For example when PS3 was released people had a fit to get comparison shots graphicswise and made such a big deal that the PS3 graphics were at most times worse on multiplatform games, when the simple fact was the PS3 architecture was totally different and developers were just getting to know it, so games stayed on initial xbox 360 level for a while.
I just feel a repeat of what happened this gen. Where the steep price of ps3 did not initially warrant its performance (of course now that has changed, in my opinion)
For the record I own both systems and love each one.

The PS3 came out 6 years into the PS2's life cycle but the PS2 stuck around for a lot longer (they're still selling them!). It is natural to assume that the same will be true of the PS3; I doubt we will have to wait until 2016 for the PS4 but the PS3 will likely still be supported at least partially until then.
Sony is probably waiting to see what Microsoft does at E3. If the next Xbox is announced Sony will start planning their own announcement; this might occur sometime later this year like at the TGS or more likely sometime a few months before the next Xbox actually comes out onto the market. Sony does still have the Vita to market and sell after all.
But it would be foolish to assume that Sony is not currently working on it's next-gen console like Microsoft is. It is very likely that some of the biggest developers like Naughty Dog already have some idea or prototype of this hardware to work with; how else do we see 3rd party launch titles?

You guys need to realize that that's the only thing he could have said. If he said anything different it would have amounted to an announcement.
As for me I hope that the next gen will come out too, and so should you. It will be a good year after coming out until the new consoles build up a library worth playing, and by that time there could be the first price cut.
Also, I'm sorry but 256 MB of RAM is laughable in this day and age. It handicaps AI, gameplay, number of enemies on screen, co-op features, multiplayer, etc. etc.

Is anyone honestly surprised by this? Both Sony and Microsoft are trying to make money off of their motion controllers right now, Microsoft is brokering new broadcast content deals for their current hardware, and Sony is just about to launch a new handheld; they're not going to mess with that by introducing a new console into the mix so soon.
My prediction? Maybe a preliminary announcement at E3 or TGS in 2013, a more tangible demo in 2014, followed by a launch either that year or the next year in 2015. Any sooner than that, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

Believe me...the current consoles are maxed out. There's only so much computing those hot, cramped 1 fan systems can do before they melt and break.
They're already breaking left and right as it is.
It's time for next gen and the modern chip manufacturing process that allows things to run much cooler and efficiently. Could Uncharted 4 look slightly better than anything else out there? Probably Should it? Probably not a good idea.

There is no reason for Sony or Microsoft to move to the next gen. Nintendo needed to join the current gen, while the first two are doing just fine in it. Graphics, power, net code are all getting better and evolving on the 360 and ps3 still, there is no need to waste millions on new hardware just to appease silly tech junkies.
