Yes, I have a question. Where ingame is that screenshot taken? I don't recall any part of La Valette castle being that open.

To be honest i saw this coming, We all knew this "100 % trusted method of knowing who got a pirate version" was crap, very likely they find out that the information was not 100% accurate ( as we all knew) and the results of starting a legal action with that "proof" will more likely end in problems at the court. Really, people just needs to relax and understand what we all know, piracy is going to stay for life.... but a good title and a good support and quality of the game pays off.... the witcher is the best example of this........

I immediately regretting purchasing The Witcher 2, since this crap came around a day after I got it. It's an alright game, but I will not be supporting this company any more, even now that they've switched their stance. It's the same as Go-Daddy, once they've made their mistake, don't go back to them.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies Just because you don't like the game, doesn't give anybody an excuse to pirate it. Regretting a purchase in no way justifies hurting a company.

I agree. Especially considering how this game was such a crusade for anti-DRM it was great to see CDP do well. This tarnished their reputation in my eyes.

are you dumb? What they were doing was minuscule to what EA, Actvision, and Blizzard do for their games.

The amount of people it effected = less than 300,000

It is completely different than SOPA and you should be ashamed for being so two faced

Am I missing something? Why is possible piracy an excuse for a company spying on users, determining home addresses and names of pirates, and sending letters to their home address?

This just in; Corporate spying is okay if you think the person might be stealing from you; more at 11.

I'm not quite sure I follow why everyone is so upset about this. They release a game with no DRM, which is what everyone wants. Then they try a new route to recoup losses, and there is no proof that this has hurt the innocent (that I've seen, I'd love to see some sources if you have them). Then, they release a letter that really plainly states what they are doing and why. Yet you still want them to go under? I wish all developers had the balls these guys do.

I don't care WHAT the company does, and WHAT they produce, if they are willing to spy on the people who use their product, and collect personal information without permission, to be able to send a letter to their house - Violating privacy rights; that's a problem. If they didn't live in Germany, there'd be a class action lawsuit against them.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies Is it really "spying" if these users put their information out in the open like that? Internet anonymity only exists if you take the precautions for it; if you torrent something you know there's the possibility you could get caught. Most people just ignore that.

It wasn't through a site, wasn't through any sort of torrent program watching their IP, it was through spyware built into the Witcher 2. Which means they also know your address as it stands.

Let's not cover up what pirates are doing with nice language; they aren't 'using their product,' they're illegally acquiring copies of the game. They are not paying customers.

Also, your IP address is not exactly private information, nor is the information gleaned from it. CDP has not done anything illegal. The method was flawed, yes. But it is exaggeration to call the process of finding a pirate's IP address, then real address, and then mailing a legal notice to them, 'corporate spying.'

"Sigh. All the people defending the game just because it had nudity, and not even caring that the company is breaking laws. Good show."

Ad hominem attacks are no way to argue.

Also, I'd like to see some proof behind the spyware accusation.

They're not spying on people who use their product. They're spying on people who went to Pirate Bay and stole it. There's a difference. They're not tracking you down if you bought it or played it at a friends house.

Also, completely ignore the fact that CDP has been a leader in trying to find non-DRM methods of thwarting pirates. Ignore that they run GoG, the best platform for purchasing classic games DRM free. They tried one new strategy briefly, decided it wasn't a good solution, and gave up on it. And they were open about what they were trying.

I will take companies like that any day versus the majority of other video game publishers, movie studios and music producers.

Legal punishment against pirates is insanely disproportionate to the crime they commit. If you walked into Best Buy and stole this game youd get hit with a very small fine, if you get caught pirating this game you can easily be hit for hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions.

It would be easier to support legal action against pirates if the punishments werent always cruel and unusual.

I don't feel they did anything wrong here. My guess as to how they got the information. Seed a torrent for your game, when you are torrenting you are providing at least your IP to the person that you are downloading so the users themselves provided the information to the company. I got this game after trying it but haven't put any time into it because I'm so backlogged on other games right now :(.

@singleandlovinit Heh I would like to see you film yourself shoplifting from Bestbuy and get caught.Make sure you hide the camera so we can see your trip to the to to county jail and try to get some footage while you are there waiting for court. And you might get lucky if it is a first offense but start compounding other offenses on it and and your misdemeanors start heading to being felonies.
Somehow I get the feeling you think pirating is ok and not the same thing as shoplifting.

Well said, that's the sad truth of it :/

There's always going to be that group of jerks who will pirate a game every time because they just straight up do not care.

I don't know what the solution is but I sure hope someone comes up with it before studios like this go under just because everyone plays their game... but barely anyone bought it.

Piracy isn't the only reason for weak or slacking sales. Killer games still make killer profits. Crap games don't.

Channel your resources into making better products that people are willing to pay for, not fighting a war you can't win.

@Apakal It would help if more PC games had demos like on consoles. Its a shame that even for many multiplatform games, the consoles get a demo but the PC does not.

The only reason I "pirate" a game is when I buy the game legally but want to get a cracked and clean version with not to deal with DRM, especially Securom such as with Borderlands and Dragon Age Origins: The Ultimate Edition. The DRM on the latter alone is an absolute nightmare I could write an essay about!

People also pirate if they have a collector's edition and don't want to open it. Some of the people who were hit by this attack from CD Project were collectors like that.

@Copybass Ah jeez zombies And those people are still pirates. You can justify it any which way you please, but if you download a video game without paying and through unofficial channels, even if you own the game in some other form, you are still pirating the game.

Buying the collector's edition and then downloading an illegal copy because you don't want to open it is the equivelent of having a mint Porsche 550 Spyder in your garage and then going out and jacking a dinged up one from a car lot because you don't want to drive yours.

They have your money for the copy of the game you bought. If you then go and pirate the game you're acquiring a second copy of the game that you have not paid for.
