DICE promises vigilance against Battlefield 3 cheaters

Finding out that cheating has apparently become rampant in Battlefield 3's online multiplayer is somewhat of a travesty, considering how much some members of our staff play it. Neither of our main combatants have ever actually spotted a cheater (at least not in any verifiable way) while playing on Xbox 360, but the game's developer is nonetheless tracking down these nefarious rogues, issuing stat resets and outright bans to offending players across 360, PS3, and PC. The Stockholm, Sweden-based devs at EA DICE "recently banned another batch of several hundred confirmed cheaters," and are only stepping up their efforts all the more as time goes on.

The first measure in this initiative will be an addition to Battlelog, one which allows players to report offenders via their online profiles, regardless of what platform they're playing on. With any luck, between the community and DICE, the contingent trying to ruin everyone's online experience will be stomped out quickly.

Cool, though I have not seen much cheating either. Unless you mean all those players that constantly have a better k/d ratio then I do... then yes. Ban them.

I've seen a couple of aimbotters on PC, but I wasn't sure how to report them. I'm glad they are implementing reports to the battlelog, it is a necessary addition.

Fix the Damned voice chat, why don't ya!!!! This is an awesome game that is taken down a whole 10 notches because of the quality (lack of) of the voice chat. This is THE thinking man's shooter, yet I can't strategize (is that even a word) with my peeps because of this hindrance...oh and the fact that my squad gets split up all the time!!!

Huh, never seen anyone cheat on 360. At least, I don't think I have.

I am pretty certain that the XBOX360 is full of cheaters who use their impressive skills and hand/eye coordination to slaughter me, which sends me into full nerd rage. My only explanation on how they are so good is obviously cheating and could in no part be associated to my lack of skill. Cheaters.....sheesh.

There are no hacks on the Xbox, get some friends to play with, work as a team, play for the objective, and get better.

Actually, there are hacks on the xbox. I've come across 2 players that were unkillable by any means (rockets, c4, knife, bullets, grenade launcher, grenades). This guy was just standing in the open, not even shooting, letting the entire server shoot at him. You could see bullets flying from across every direction hitting this guy, his body moving from side to side, but he never went down. Actually, a pretty hilarious cheater. I'm not totally sure if he even killed anybody. I've heard from some that this is a glitch and i've read reports that it's a full blown hack. So who knows?

I'm sure that there are more hacks out there, some probably undetectable to the naked eye. The server binaries were leaked for BF3 PC, making punkbuster and etc avoidable. In theory someone could just use those binaries to make 360 lobbies. Maybe that's why you see so many games with "P1231376761" as the title.

@Dreamscape this happened to my buddy. Was definitely a glitch. After he was downed and revived, his character had no name tag above him and the enemy team couldn't see him (they would d literally run through him). He also couldn't be damaged. But I've only seen this once.

That's a glitch, which was fixed with the B2K patch. Those other servers are bought by EA to increase the total server amount, there is a difference between how the xbox and pc file types are handled. You people just seriously suck for down voting me without providing any solid proof (Video) of someone using hacks on either the PS3 or the Xbox. If people were "hacking" you could go look them up on battlelog and see their recent games/stats and see how wrong you are.

Snipers head shotting me immediately as I spawn on a running squad mate, people one shot killing me at long range with medium range weapons that have nothing but a holo or a rds on them. Maybe they are just extremely gifted, but I smell something foul in the air. (Note, this is on 360, so we aren't talking about the simple swipe of a mouse).

No, I know a bad sniper when I play as one;) And I'd rule out bad luck because it happened multiple times in the same match. I am more than happy to legitimately get my but kicked, in fact I often find it amusing, but I call BS on certain activities.

its pretty easy to do. just go to battlelog k/d leaderboards. the cheaters are pretty obvious.

I hope the report system is followed by some type of investigation, or I could see sore losers misusing it.

Through Battlelog? That means it will go unused most of the time, and almost never while the suspected cheating is going on. A way needs to be added for in-match reporting.

I'm assuming you're a console gamer. If you were on a PC, you'd *wish* it was an unused feature.

When you see people with 120% accuracy it's a dead giveaway. The PC has thousands of cheaters.

I don't play on the PC, but 120%? Seriously? That's like every 5th bullet hitting two targets at once. Lol.

while i don't run into cheaters often (i stick to servers with active admins), i can verify they exist on PC.

glad to see they are trying to do something about it though.

also: being called a cheater, when in fact i'm just doing well is quite flattering to me.

Yeah, as long as you play on servers that are well administered, Cheating NEVER becomes an issue.

The only thing I've ever seen that made me cry foul is people sniping from the overpass on Tehran highway. True enough they are sitting ducks and you could just snipe them back but still I just don't find it necessary to get up there. Other than that I haven't noticed any cheating.

The way to fix that, is to remove the ability to use the MAV as an elevator. It's how snipers get in all sorts of (normally) unreachable spots.

I've been up on that overpass (didn't do any sniping!, just wanting to peek behind the curtain), and surprisingly, it's fully rendered out, with lane lines on the road, barricades, etc. It was kinda neat. Almost like they planned to have part of the map up there at one point.

I play on PS3 and once during a game of conquest in the Paris metro map at the C flag some fcuker got under the map somehow and was just killing everyone. you could see him on the map as the ememy, u could hear the bullets but you couldnt see him until he killed you in the killcam. here is one BF3 player hoping this arshole gets banned

Use the link to report him. I have not seen any cheaters in game. But in the Beta some guy had an aimbot EODbot. He had 120 Kills

On the 360, I was shot by a guy who was in an enclosed room on the other side of the map (Point E at Sharqi, I was at point A) with a pistol. It was obviously a cheat, and I was pissed.

But if the is a cheater, even if you ban him, he will evently came back and cheat again, Dice needs to do a game with cheat proof, that yes, will work!

As a PC player, I've seen tons of people getting kicked/banned from a server due to an aimbot hack, usually because Punkbuster picks it up and bans them which then gets displayed in the chat feed.

But I've come across cheaters that weren't being kicked/banned. Also, if you look at the global leaderboards, everyone on top of the list is a cheater because they have like 10 hours of playtime but a million points.

I've this glitch happen to me before. Hasn't happen since but it sure was funny. Practically everyone on the server messaged me asking me how to hack.

Haven't seen any cheaters on PS3. But I do wanna see that glitch or whatever people are talking about where a player can't die. Standing in the middle of the room being shot at by everybody sounds hilarious

I've encountered quite a few people on PC whom I suspected were cheaters, but one can never be too sure. 90% of the time if I suspect somebody is cheating they are only on the server for 1 round then they leave to find another server, so I'm assuming they are trying to reduce their chance at getting caught?

If only every developer would do this than I would be happy.

PS3 is full of boosters, little kids asking you to help them boost, so damn annoying.

I just tried to report a guy on PS3 and it says he doesn't exist. I'm guessing this is either because he has never used battlelog or that his name on battlelog is different to his psn ID like mine. Flaw in the system right there.

So I guess that means we can just report all the cod nerds that play and camp at the spawns yes finally justification ban them all but don't get me wrong mw3 ain't bad its just not battlefield 3 and u can tell when some one a cod player trying to play bf3 that's about the only cheating I ever see

They should do something about spawn camping. I don't like getting blown to bits when I just spawn into a chopper.

Also, this game promotes camping in general. I don't think "CoD players" are the problem when you are expected to sit on flag points and MCOMs.

I think it is the worst on PC. Some (not all) servers will kick players if it detects aimbots or hacks. However, in one server without the filter, a player started killing every person on the other side with a knife seconds after the game started. You spawned, you died mysteriously. Even people in TANKS were getting killed by him with a "knife". I quit that server and looked him up on battlelog and saw his overall accuracy was something like 95%. There is a way to report potential cheaters to Dice in battlelog browser, but it is indirect and does not automatically label them as a cheater. You have to explain the circumstances and server the cheating happened on, and than forward the message to Dice. It needs to be rectified.

I've seen some obvious cheaters like 1 hit kill guns and mass murder hacks. The rest are harder to tell...

Apparently Joystiq blocked my comment that was a bit salty with language. Here's a cleaner version:

1. Major flaw: the other player needs to actually sign up for Battlelog in order to be reported. I learned this while playing Tehran Highway and being unable to report people hanging out on the overpass. I just sent an Xbox complaint, so hopefully it gets resolved. Or maybe DICE will fix their game. Either works.

2. BF3 players need to stop complaining about "CoD players." It's unbelievable this is what gamers are having flame wars about: two veteran franchises that existed for many years and coexisted without anybody complaining. Thanks to EA's incitement by saying BF3 will beat MW3 and Activision's unfortunate milking of the IP, gamers got up in arms and started evangelizing BF3. Clealry its working out great for EA. Maybe it's because I've only played the console versions and only BF2 and BF1942 previously, but BF3 has been a shoddy port and still needs lots of patches. This hasn't been a game to get overly excited about from what I've played, and the support has been crap on EA/DICE's part.

@AGuyOnTheInternet actually i used to prefer cod over battlefield but that was until u have nothing but campers and boosters play in mw and black ops now I think they realize how much better bf3 is now they r slowly but surely pop in up every where doin the same crap and trying to ruin everyone else's expirince with bf3

I knew it! Myself and others repeatedly come across people that can take loads of hits at point blank / super close range. The inevitable kill cam that follows is the real teller at 100%. Seriously? I know I've unloaded a whole shotgun mag into someone like that more than once, they shoot me when I run out of ammo and they have 100%. No way. Also someone out in the open against maybe 4 people at close range. the individual survives and kills the opponents. How is that even possible? Even with lousy aim that person should be well and truly gone.
Can't forget being shot with a rifle through walls / solid shipping containers. Again, how?
