Namco Bandai takes note of Dark Souls PC petition
60
We never thought we'd say this, but here goes: someone noticed an online petition. Namco Bandai threw down the gauntlet, tasking a masochistic PC audience with drumming up signatures for a potential PC port of Dark Souls. Over 64,000 of them responded.
Namco Bandai community manager Tony Shoupinou dropped into the forums to say that his bosses approached him after the news broke. "If you wanted to have the attention of Namco Bandai Games, now you have it," he wrote in a post. "The future is in your hands, and I hope you will keep supporting this. I make a personal objective to make sure every relevant people in Namco Bandai Games is in touch with this formidable effort."
It's hardly confirmation that a port is incoming, but at least you've gotten Namco-Bandai's attention -- and knowing is half the battle.

Excellent! I would love to play this on my PC.
I got it on my PS3 already, but why not buy it again? Maybe 3 more times?

I want it on PC badly since the PS3 version (not sure about 360) is SO laggy. I'm sure my PC could handle the game. But my god the framerate in the Forest of this game is atrocious! A few other areas too.
Plus...I imagine the mod community for this game would go NUTS!

I just hope that if they do i, they make a REAL pc version, not a cheap console port, and on Steam no stupid games for windows...... maybe it´s time to start a second petition.

@ovoon Yeah... so long as it's not "Games for Windows" I'll double dip. Higher resolutions and a smoother frame rate, please! :D Plus, if it's actually a good port, who knows what other goodies they'll add (c'mon 3D).

I was about to say, this is somewhat surprising and cool and all, but From has a say in this too, right? I don't really see why not, so I'd say let PC people have a chance to play this. It really is a great game. Reminds me of old school Castlevania difficulty. In fact, this game is akin to a perfect 3d Castlevania.

These assholes better actually buy the damn thing and not simply pirate it, because if Namco ends up being encouraged by the petition and the game ultimately fails to perform sales-wise, petitions will mean jack shit to publishers in the future.

Maybe that is less "most people steal it" and more "you surround yourself with selfish assholes." Steam is a huge success for a reason. People buy PC games. If 9 out of 10 people on PC pirated games, there would literally be no PC games. While it's more profitable to publish on consoles, there is still money to be made in PC. Otherwise the last "new" PC game would have been in 2001.

@Ovy I don't want to say this applies to only multiplayer games, but have a great game that encourages people to purchase the game and play it online legitimately is worth its weight in gold. Look at World of Warcraft, Left 4 Dead, League of Legends as successful examples. Sure, you can pirate your copy and rent your own private off-shore server to play these games, but you'd be missing out on an incredible gaming experience. I signed that petition ready to hand over my $50-60 to play this game because I know my friends will play it and we're ready to have damn good time. Make the game worth it and less practical to pirate it, and people will buy it.

Go look at Steam's user activity (hint: in the TENS of MILLIONS) then come back and say the same thing with a straight face so we can take you straight to the nuthouse.

@Vocality No offense mate, but as a die hard PC gamer myself, pretending like theft isn't an issue for PC games is just you sticking your head in the sand. I hate software thieves with a passion and they give us good PC gamers a bad name, but I don't fault non-PC gamers for thinking we're all like that.

Completely agree, these people can say all they want about "lots of people buy their games just look at steam sales" but just because the majority is honest in their gaming doesn't make piracy not an issue. The less people that pirate the more money devs make and the more incentive they have to make more great games. If ten million people buy a game and one million people steal it that's still one million people too many.

I already put seventy plus hours into the PS3 version. I'm not sure I'd be up to put more time into a PC version of the same game, even if it did look amazing. Having said that, if there are mods, or an expansion of some sort, I'd be all over it.
Don't get me wrong; I'd buy it (to support the next game being on PC), but I'm not sure if I'd actually have the time to play it.

@LarZen You're a jerk.
Just look at the incredible sales for Skyrim, the 100% Year over year increase of sales for Steam for the SEVENTH straight year for evidence,
A similar game to Darksouls, the Witcher 2 sold over a million copies in 6 months, over 30% of which are digital (giving them at least twice as much money as a console retail sale would have).
Pirates are pirates, on any platform, they aren't PC gamers, or console gamers. They are irrelevant to the market.

Funny you mention The Witcher 2, it sold over 1 million copies and is so far pirated over 4,5 million copies.
It's gonna be realy interesting to se how many copies The Witcher 2 wil sell on the X360 when it comes, with the right marketing I think it wil oblitirate the pc sales.
Pirates aint irrelevant to the market at all, they have more power over what is coming and what kind of insane copy protection it wil have for the pc community then you think.

That sort of logic was the one that Crytek used when Crysis 1 was PC exclusive. 3 Million copies sold later, they still though that the game would have sold more on consoles. Then came Crysis 2. 2 million copies over all 3 platforms. Less than Crysis 1 which was PC only. I guess all those xbox and PS3 players must have pirated the game!

@Kinthalis Calm down chief. Piracy is an undeniable problem for the industry for all platforms, but even more so for the pc. I'm not saying that every pc gamer pirates their games, but come on man, there is a reason a lot of companies don't go out of their way to support the pc. The rate of piracy is higher on pc than likely all the other platforms combined or close to it. The reason is simple, it's easier and there's a bigger market for it. Unfortunately denial won't make it go away. Just buy the game and keep supporting your favorite games, that way no one will ever to be able to claim you didn't do your part to help give companies a reason to keep trying.

Man, I'm not trying to offend anyone on here nor am I trying to start a fanboy flame war but some of these comments by people taking offense to anyone mentioning the word pirate or pirating is a little much. Look, piracy is a problem on all consoles but the pc gets the most attention and has the biggest issue with it. No bodies saying ever of gamer pirates their games. We all know steam is growing abd likely helpig stem the issue. And we all know that if youre on this site usually that means you aren't a major pirate. So calm down. I'm mainly a console gamer, but I've enjoyed a couple games on my pc. I sincerely hope the stigma of pc gaming changes in the future and I hope that people keep buying more of their games instead of stealing them so you guys dont get shut out in the cold for a crime you didn't take part in and can actually enjoy games on your preferred platform. But as of right now, piracy is an issue on the pc, and you guys need to grow some thicker skin and not assume that people are talking about all pc gamers or you specifically when they say pirates. They are talking about the people who are stealing stuff. If you aren't, don't assume they mean you.

"Growing a thicker skin" has nothing to do with what people are getting peeved about. There's quite a sect of loony gamers who are literally saying "DON'T PORT THIS TO PC. IT'LL GET PIRATED TO HELL AND BACK". They don't want ANYONE, even legit consumers, to play the game on the PC because of some incredibly idiotic notion that high piracy = no profit.
The reason the PC platform has higher piracy rates is due to it being that much easier, but that really doesn't significantly affect the publisher's bottom line since a very large amount of pirates inflate the piracy numbers by downloading simply because they can, not because they were actually potential consumers. If piracy was truly as bad as some people like to say, no company would ever make a game for the PC, and absolutely no one would make the PC their primary platform.
Unfortunately for the naysayers, neither of the above two statements are true. If companies can and continue to rake in the profit on PC gaming, piracy isn't really as big a detrimental issue as some people like to claim.

@PointlessPuppies First of all, rereading my comment makes me think commenting on my smart phone isn't such a good idea due to all the typo's.
Now, I've never heard of the people who are out and out calling for a boycott of the PC by game makers. If that really happens then, well, wow. If what you say is true, it seems to me like the people calling for that are doing it more so because they are fanboys and want to deprive their PC counterparts from enjoying a game to prove the superiority of their console, which means it has really nothing to do with piracy. But regardless, none of that disproves my point. Just because someone mentions piracy on the PC doesn't mean they are accusing you of piracy so you don't need to bring up you huge steam library or any of that as that doesn't do anything to disprove that piracy is a problem (i'm not speaking specifically when I say "you" of coarse). You may be right that people may download a game on the PC more because they can, but that still equates to someone stealing a product and not giving the dev and pub any money. Whether it actually equates to a loss of sales is secondary to the fact that their product is being stolen and used for free. Even if you weren't going to buy my game and you just downloaded it because you could, I wouldn't be ok with you stealing from me either way. Stealing is stealing.
