This reminds me I need to finish XIII. As my first Final Fantasy game ever I was left... confused as to what the big deal is. Maybe it was just a bad Final Fantasy game to jump on board with.

@Alpha Rogue "everyones huge obsession with Tifa and Cloud that made people convinced that 7 was amazing."

I adore FFVII, but I have almost no opinion on the Cloud/Tifa thing.

What I DO love is the world-building, the music, all the secondary characters and locations...

It's hard to explain how impressive FF7 was when it was released. It really felt like something new, like something we had never seen before. And the very first time you left Midgar, not knowing what was beyond it's borders, that was incredible.

I don't think it holds up well at all, but my nostalgia for it is incredible. I think many of the older 16-bit games hold up better as far as games go.

Well, my first and favorite is V, it has easily one of the best level up systems, good music and decent story (not complex, but endearing characters).

Other good ones are IV and VI. VI and below are all actually good, I don't find VII as good as it is hyped, VIII is bad and IX is kind of nice if you like the old ones.

All final fantasy games are lame. Play some Bethesda games and don't look back. I have a friend who is a big final fantasy fan, he started playing Skyrim and he was like "oh my god this is the best rpg I have ever played" I was like, no shit. I have been playing Elder Scrolls Games for the last 10 years and compared to the Elder Scrolls, final fantasy is a joke. I think the only reason people started liking FF games is because when they first came out the girls were barely clothed for a video game. Gee let's play a game where you make no decisions and just wander around.

At the time of it's release, the game was phenomenal.

People remember it fondly.

While it's easy to get sick of FF7 because of everything that came out based on FF7 that wasn't FF7 (yeah, I wish they never made any of that crap, including the movie) that doesn't diminish its strong points.

One of my favorite aspects of it is the battle system. It feels so tight, not overly complicated... Materia is simple, and easy to understand. It just feels very satisfying.. And the battle theme is one of my favorites (tons of great music in there actually)

It's still one of my top FF games.

FFXIII is definitely down near the bottom.. It feels misdirected.. empty.. And the character design... mmeh... it's ten times worse in XIII-2 though.

7 was great from the huge world / narrative, interesting characters (Yuffie and Cid are two of my favorite from the entire series), the first permanent death of a player character in an FF series. Then the materia system was awesome, finding sweet combos and links. There was something amazing when you learned to link Final materia to Phoenix summon, or to mime KotR for free cheap casting. Plus it's story is pretty damn deep compared to the others of the series, there are so many layers of philosophy in that game that most people don't even realize.

And Sephiroth is awesome.

@Alpha Rogue what got me was how big the attacks were, the way you got your new characters and the summons. They made it fun, and awesome summons are something I miss in the FF games, which is hard w/ out it being turn based. I hope they can think of a way to get them in and make it exciting. The combat in xiii was too fast for something like a huge summons.

I'm really starting to thing those XIII haters are just the players that had a difficult time with the new battle system. The linear portions are to help you focus and understand the new commands and shifting. Its a step UP to previous FF's. Its all real time. No turn base Pokemon-ease. After platinuming XIII I decided to download VII and man what a disappoint. Everything is dumbed down. The only thing that was cool was Limit Break, but it was kinda uncontrollable. Once you earn it you had to use it or use a item or magic. I actually stopped playing VII and started a new play through on XIII.

Played 8 and thought it was alright...but as I coudln't figure how to beat one of the witch bosses, I gave up on the series. Lame-o, i know!

But yeah, Play 7 if you can.

If they re-released 7, I'd REALLY be back on it with all that Advent children Visuals!

First perma-death of a player character, huh? Tellah would like a word with you. As would the twins from the same game. And I do believe there was a death or two in FF3/6 also, but I don't remember the character's name since I renamed all of them back then.

Well said. I haven't played FFXIII, but based on that infamous map of the first part of the game, it seemed like its version of "linearity" stripped away all the excess of JRPGs but didn't restore any of the character that came with that.

@Bubbameister33 regardless of its straightforwardness and as disappointed as I was in that aspect. I still learned to enjoy it as a casual game. I can play it for an hour relax and then I'm done for awhile. that being said I still havent beat the game and still pop it in now and then.

I have been waiting for awhile now to play a game that has me immersed. Ironically the most immersive game Ive played for awhile to me was Dead Space Extraction and you cant get much linear than that.

There were just so many things wrong with FF13, not just the linearity although that was definitely the root. The editing was simply atrocious, the amount of time to get from point A to point B for practically 0 payoff was incredibly boring. The horrible horrible level design made playing the game unbearable, my god the crystal sea...... oh my god it was so damn bad.

Linear games MUST have good pace otherwise its torture, Uncharted 2 was linear as hell but its pace was masterful and that made the game a lot of fun.

The pacing and linearity of FF13 make its by far the worst game Ive played this generation and one of the worst games Ive ever played. Im sure youll make some shit up like Im exaggerating or I didnt like it because it wasnt as good as other FF's, thats bullshit, I genuinely hated that game.

I completely disagree with this article. I don't see how linearity breaks immersion. So many games have completely linear pathways and plots that you forced to follow, and it doesn't take away from the "immersion".

Personally, I had a great time with XIII, learning the excellent combat system. I would say the game's biggest fault is perhaps it's pacing, forcing you to use specific characters for a majority of the game, though even that was just a learning experience for the various nuances of each class combination ("ok, you've tried ravager/medic, now learn how to use ravager/saboteur").

I think the "cost of entry" into the game was terribly high.

Those who say they love it probably play other JRPGs or played all the previous ones etc. They have established expectations of the FF series and know how the JRPGs....deliver...in their own way.

For someone who hasn't played a JRPG, or played a previous FF, it was a tall order for them to think that we would jump into a linear "out of player control" story that would require us to "watch" 20 hours of gameplay before we became invested. (Loads of reviews/players said the game doesnt even really take off til the 25/hr mark etc)

I put in around 10 hours into 13 and promptly returned the game to Gamestop. I've even played other JRPGs from the PS1&2 eras, as well as a number of previous FF titles, yet I am still not a "fan" of the JRPG style per se, but I wanted to give this one a shot since it was sort of a "new era" of FF (being on the PS3) and was looking very...pretty. While ten hours is nothing compared to a tiny select number of games(and the overall length of 13), it IS a lot of time to spend watching a movie and not giving a damn about the characters or where the story was going.

While the full experience may have ended up being good, FFXIII expected me to wade through a prologue that was longer than the entire Harry Potter Film Franchise.

And you're entitled to your opinion. However, you don't speak for everyone. News stories act like they're speaking for the majority of the audience when they have no idea what that audience has to say about it. I think that was his aim to explain.

Personally I think linear games have more potential to "immerse" you in the game than open world games do. I'm under the strong impression that video game developers are *usually* more capable of making a good story than I am, and I think in order to do that they need to add linearity.

The gripe with FF13 isn't that it's linear, I played through FF7, FF7 Crisis Core and FF4 last year and all those games were all technically linear. You have something you have to do, and there's basically one way to do it. FF13 was the same way, but the only difference was that your environment was also linear. It got grating after a while, but I though travelling to pulse for the first time and all of a sudden having a "big" open world was perfectly timed with my patience running out.

Anyways, I loved FF13, and I'm quite excited for FF13-2!

Yes but those linear games have more compelling stories in a much shorter upswing time, with better pacing, and better acting.

I agree, saying linearity breaks immersion is saying that i can't get immersed into a great book or watch a suspenseful movie. Though I can say that FFXIII didn't meet any of my expectations of a good linear game and I'm not one to hype a non-sequel just because of the title or company.

Opinions Good: Lunar SSCS, Tales Series (*Destiny, Vesperia, Symphonia*), Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, Star Ocean Series

Bad: FFXIII, FFVIII, Saga Frontier 2, Grandia Xtreme, Last Remnant

Imagine playing Uncharted 2 or 3 in a giant hallway 60% of the time. Linear games can be great when the pacing and level design are tight and well thought out, FF13 did not have this.

The problem I have is that lately, it seems that every FF game is declared an affront to the series if it's not the _best_ FF game. XIII wasn't the best FF, but it sure as shit wasn't the worst. I'd call it right about in the middle, with 1 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,7 , and 10 being better, 9 being about the same, and the rest (2, 3, 8, 12) being not as good. Even then, those last four aren't necessarily bad games, excepting 8, which felt like a FF ripoff rather than a proper FF.

Games are allowed to be mediocre. I don't like feeling like I wasted money, but there's a difference between FFXIII and E.T.

The article doesn't say that linearity cannot make a good game, it says that no attempt at hiding the linearity by giving some freedom to the player is bad. Take shadow of the colossus, one of the most linear game possible as far as gameplay, you have to kill enemy in order, yet the world is open so you can go around whenever you want, there's nothing to do, but at least you're not on rail.

I've played on rail shooter where you had more movement freedom than FF13.

Also, I'd say the bigger problem of FF13 is the story, the initial setting had potential, but everything was handle essentially the worst possible way. And the ending was just insulting, I'd say the game was a 6/10 before the ending (great soundtrack and good battle system, if unrefined) but ending was so stupid and random that I'd lower my personal score to 4/10. I do agree that for good story, linearity is almost a must, but what's the point in being linear if the story is crap?
