Okay.....and the WHOLE POINT of forcing people to upgrade and to make a console that is connected to internet is...........????????????????.......at least not to fix the bugs they left, i can see that.........

Yeah, when Maka Wuhu is selected I just switch off the wi-fi and join a new match. I don't want to cheat and be part of the problem, but I also don't want to get last place. Luckily this is the only track with such an obvious glitch (so far) and it seems that people have been choosing it less and less.

Nintendo doesn't build in the ability to patch games, which is what this would require. So what they're saying is "if we fix this problem in all cards we make from now on, it gives an unfair advantage to those who have the original non-fixed cards".

@(Unverified) Actually they can - they patched Zelda a few weeks ago. But maybe not on 3DS. So I get your point.

@briscott I'm guessing they don't have a method to check and validate the version of the game people are running online, and thus they wouldn't be able to enforce a patch. So patch distribution would be a separate problem in this case (although considering Nintendo's draconian way of distributing the Zelda patch, it would still be a problem).

A large majority of Wii games do not have a system in place to receive patches.

Zelda was patched because Nintendo released a tool that you downloaded off the wii shop channel and it altered your game save. The game does not have the ability to retrieve patches built in so they had to issue a workaround.

Before this Nintendo made you mail in your SD cards with the broken save and before that you basically had to deal with it and hope it doesn't happen the next time around.

@(Unverified) Not true since the recent 3DS update, actually. They could definitely patch it. Perhaps with enough fan pressure, they will.

@briscott Nintendo really doesn't "get it" if they still aren't allowing online games to be patched post release. It's such a joke. Even with single player games, their solutions for Metroid Prime Other M and Skyward Sword game breaking bugs is pathetic (mail in your SD card, really? Or a special Wii Channel to fix a game save?).

@briscott Here's how they could patch it:
1.) Firmware could check to see if a patch has been downloaded for a game inserted into the system.
2.) If the patch exists, it will run the patch instead of the card. The patch would act like an action replay or game genie except it would fix the bug rather than create more cheats.
3.) The patch could also advertise its version to the server. If the server does not get a version number, they know its an unpatched game and thus would reject the cart from connecting online.

So there doesn't have to be a system built into the game. The system only has to be built into the firmware and you could theoretically patch any game.

@JasonGW That's what I was thinking. Seemed like prior to the 3DS's release when it was first shown at E3, one of the features Nintendo made mention of (although I think only once during its reveal) was that the 3DS would be able to download and patch the games directly.

@briscott They actually did not PATCH Skyward Sword. They only released a utility to "un-glich" a save state. You can still glitch your game up.

A true PATCH would be actually removing the glitch from happening in the first place.

Nintendo does not patch in-game. They really need to start. I don't yet have the game, and because of this, I'm likely going to just pass on it all together. The "long-tail" sales that MK games usually grants Nintendo will not be around for this game because of this.

EVERYBODY LISTEN!!! HEY!!! HELLO!!!! TOSSERS!!!

Ok, sorry, but seriously, pay the hell attention.

On the 3DS you CAN patch games. It was made available after one of their recent, mandatory, updates. In fact, many of my GB games, pushmo, and 3D Golf were just "updated" last week.

It's still a crappy system, naturally, and I didn't see any info for any of the games about what the "updates" address. But it's doable.

This is just another case of Nintendo being run by complete freaks and idiots. Sorry, but it's getting pretty ridiculous on how they handle certain things. It's not like they'll break their budget or take away all their profit from the game by doing a simple update. They've updated games before through cart updates. So, this is just stupid when the 3DS was updated so the games could be updated.

Those are all download games, aren't they? Of course they can force you to re-download a game, but for a cartridge-based game, that's sort of equivalent to sending out new cartridges - not going to happen.

It might still be possible to fix it but they'd have to do it a different way. I'm not aware of any patches for Nintendo cartridge games.

You'd think they could do something on the server - make it disallow that track from the selection or something...

Funny thing. I actually received ghost data through spotpass of a player abusing the glitch to get a fast time.
Without even going on wifi play that would have exposed me to the glitch if I didn't find out about it elsewhere, which is everywhere.

You would think with Nintendo blazing the technological trail with such innovations like "the Wii-mote",3-D and the soon to be released screen controller thing that they would catch on to releasing and applying mandatory updates for games.Especially the ones that are playable and popular online enabled ones.

Another fine example of how Nintendo and online dont mix well.

I can't believe nintendo fans are making such a huge issue about the lack of online play in modnation. Mario kart never had online until now, yet no one ever held that against it. The important thing for me is being able to share tracks online, which we still can. I never play racers online anyway. And, you know, mario kart's online is broken (on this track at least) and nintendo refudse to patch,so it isn't much better.

By saying "Doing so would create an unfair advantage for the users of the original release of the game," they probably mean that they don't intend on fixing new copies of the game because they haven't figured out a way to fix the original ones... leave it to Nintendo to not understand how to make mandatory patches for online multiplayer games. They probably didn't leave room for that kind of support when designing it.

I read this response yesterday and I still don't know what the hell that e-mail is trying to say? Exactly what "unfair advantage" are they speaking of? The "unfair advantage" of NOT being able to exploit a glitch which actually DOES cause a real unfair advantage? Are they trying to say that updating a game means some people won't have the update, hence creating multiple versions of the game? Because they can't possibly adopt a "minimal amount of patches only" policy where they only fix the real problems so as to not ruin an entire track with one simple glitch?

It's obvious Nintendo just doesn't feel like patching the game, pure and simple. But honestly, if I were concerned enough to write an e-mail to Nintendo asking WTF about a bug in the game, if I got that nonsensical response back I would've been pretty offended that they're insulting my intelligence with those non-answers.

Because they aren't fixing a glitch? You realize that most developers have left games with their glitches, in fact, before online became a thing for games, MOST games had them and were never fixed.

I don't "get" Mario Kart. I don't see any appeal to playing a Mario Kart game. I don't see what Mario Kart has over 90% of any other racing games out there. I don't get why being bad at the game gets you rewards (blue shells). Am I the only one who doesn't "get" it?

@serialsleeper I understand your complaint about the blue shell and other overpowered power-ups, however, these only get given to bad players who are in 6-8th place. If these players are meant to be in the back of the pack then these players will actually find themselves at the back yet again. In this sense, an experienced player who made a mistake during a race is able to make up for lost time. So while I understand the concern most bad players get to next to no help, if any at all, from the overpowered power-ups
