Assuming you actually played the game with Knuckles, then you coincidentally stopped right about the point where the games hit their peak.
Otherwise, go play Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Like, right now.

I like Sonic CD better, too, and I do enjoy a good deal of the post-S3&K games, but it's pretty much undeniable that that was their peak, and one they've never gotten as high as since.
