Yes, it makes no sense for Microsoft to adapt the strategy that allowed them to beat the Playstation brand this generation by beating Sony to market with a next-gen machine. That would be stoopid! I mean, it is not like Microsoft is run by extremely competent executives. Most dumb high schoolers realize that success now means success in the future.

/sarcasm (in case that was all way over your head)

Granted, but I don't think that people outside of hardcore fanboys pay as much attention to E3 as we think they do. Hell, outside of my gaming friends, no one I know even knows about the Vita yet. I just don't think a reveal would hurt them.

Any stock investor pays closer attention to technology trade shows than you could possibly imagine.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo make announcements based largely on stock price and market demands. Expect an announcement as beating your competitor to the punch is HUGE for MSFTs stock price. And Sony will announce too, or if they don't, expect to have another 50% shaved off their stock price.

I wouldn't be surprised if instead of announcing a next-gen console, they did another Xbox 360 revision. An even smaller, less power hungry revision with no "Core" model to really push the media aspect and help developers push games that may need installs (Forza 3 and 4 for instance). Maybe:

$229 - Xbox 360 (320 GB)
$299 - Xbox 360 (320 GB) + Kinect

I know I'd be looking at buying yet another Xbox if they did something like that.

It's definitely not as big as we think. but other news sites take notice of E3. CNN, BBC, Guardian, Yahoo, MSN. they always have reports on the new reveals at CES and E3 and the big conventions. that helps get the word out.

The lack of knowledge about the vita is probably because Sony is afraid to dump money into marketing until their backs are against the wall. Most of my friends still think the PS3 has no games. haha

Apple makes its money because people who buy their products have some weird fascination with seeing there is a new version and having to buy it even if the changes in it are marginal.

That and if you're charging extreme prices for things your going to make a profit if they sell.

They did last generation. Live is Live and nothing to do with what console it is on.

You must be thinking of Sony and how they wanted to charge you for games you already owned as a reward for upgrading you PSP to the new Go version. Great success!

I'm confused about how people suddenly thought that buying a UMD five years ago meant they were entitled to a lifetime supply of digital versions of that game as soon as the PSP Go was announced.

It's not really a crazy number when you consider all of the replacements people went through. I've owned two over the years but I only have one account. a friend of mine has bought 4 over the years.

and then you have to consider there are a quite a few people out there that have no internet.

Just because it is hard for you to believe something, doesn't make it so. I would think there a lot of people like Cap Morgan's son and my brother, 22 million to be f*cking exaxct, that bought a 360 and didn't sign up for Live.

@chrisredfield31 You guys are actually missing my point. What I'm trying to say is that the sales numbers are bogus. The 40 million number on XBL accounts is a lot closer to what the install base actually is. Microsoft had apparently sold 59 million at the end of November, and then claimed it sold 7 million more Xboxes up to January. Only 5 million actually went online with their consoles. I will not believe for one bit that 2 million people are naive to what XBL is, or what it offers.

In addition, the 'evidence' you guys are pointing at, are anecdotal evidence. It means that it is only a very small sample (in your cases, individual experience) and you can't actually PROVE your point beyond your own experience and some people around you. Let's get it out of the way, and say that I do understand that there are a lot of people who don't go online.

@eat it That's what I was trying to get at. The sales numbers are bogus. In the last thread, people were talking about how "a sale is a sale". In terms of $$$, that is true, MS made ALL that money. However in terms of actual install base? The numbers are all padded up and everyone knows it.

Yes, there are going to be quite a few that don't have internet, but in this generation, I cannot believe that there is 22 million installed base that don't. That's too large of a population to NOT know about online gaming or have access to it. It's unrealistic given the fact that MS only makes up a part of the entire gaming community. We also have PS3, Wii, PC with numbers well above 22 million combined WITH internet access.

I remember when I was like you. When I believed that everyone in the world was in the exact same situation as me. Oh yeah obviously I'm going to sign up for XBL, and everyone that frequents Joystiq and owns a 360 is, so obviously everyone else in the world is too.

It's time to come to grips with the idea that not everyone that buys these systems is a middle-class boy that has high-speed internet and wants to browse gaming blogs and play online with friends. There are still a huge number of people that don't have high speed internet. There are a huge number of people that buy the cheapest version of the 360 they can find for their 8 year old kid, stick it in the living room, and never give hooking it up to the internet a second thought. There are a huge number of people that live on college campuses that block access to networks like XBL and that makes up a big part of the Xbox demographic.

Buying an Xbox and not ever hooking it up to a network is just as stupid as buying an xbox with no hard drive or buying an HDTV without HD service. Yet when MS offered a version of the console without a hard drive tons of people bought it. When HD service used to cost extra there were still an exorbitant number of people that had HDTVs and still didn't pay extra for it. And yes, there are still a huge number of people that buy xboxes and never hook them up to the internet.

Also, 66 minus 40 is not 22, ffs.

@Vcize yeah okay, I fudged up the numbers but I couldn't edit it when I realized I made that mistake. It is early morning what can I say LOL

Anyways, like I said, it's anecdotal evidence. Not on my part, but on your part. YOU can't provide me with actual numbers and all you can really say is that "a huge number of so and so".

Meanwhile, what *I* was looking at, was the 26 million that was NOT online. That's quite an unrealistic number to me. The online gaming community dwarfs 26 million so to actually claim that, that many people don't have online is BS. I'll accept that 2 million people did not go online out of 7 million (that's actually rooted closer to fact), but 26 is quite ridiculous.

@eat it and those aren't actual customers either which further drives my point that the numbers are padded. From your own article "It stems from a Census Bureau survey of about 54,000 households conducted in October of last year." Current US population is 307,006,550.

@eat it The article says roughly 40% does not have broadband access. 40% of that is 122,802,620. But that also means that 184,203,930 DOES have internet. That number is well above 26 million. You have to think about the demographic, like what is the average gamer, what kind of games are popular these days (COD, Halo, etc) what they know about gaming and technology in general.

The burden of proof is on the accuser.

You're coming in here making accusations about padded numbers with your proof being "it just doesn't seem right".

Then when people explain it to you you just respond with "yeah but show me actual hard numbers". That's your job, you're the one making the accusation.

The bottom line is that you have a poor view of the world's demographics. If you want proof then look no further than HDTV.

http://www.myce.com/news/HDTV-owners-not-watching-in-HD-15452/

That states that as of 2009 43.6 percent of people that owned HDTVs did not have HD programming. It's utterly unfathomable that someone would buy an HDTV and not use it for HD, but that's exactly what an absurd number of people were doing.

If anything, someone buying a 360 and not hooking it up to the internet is much MORE reasonable than someone buying an HDTV and not using HD programming.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons that people would buy a 360 and not hook it up to the internet, but even beyond that the largest percentage likely comes from the simple fact that a huge number of the people that buy technology don't know anything about the technology they're buying (see: HDTV example among a billion others). I would guess that there are a ton of PS3 owners that also own a blu-ray player because they had no idea their PS3 played blu-rays.

@eat it But by your own numbers (which are outdated by the way) 60% DO have internet and that number dwarfs 26 million. By your own admission, your friend has internet access but chooses not to connect it to the internet. He still has internet access.

Also you people continue to ignore the fact that all the stuff you throw at me are anecdotal. What you see in your own personal lives does not apply to the general populace. Your experience does not explain why 26 million owners do not have their 360's connected. There is no way you can explain it. Not even I can explain it or even attempt to.

The fact is, there are 26 million out there that are not connected. What I was trying to get at, is that the numbers Microsoft threw out about 66 million consoles sold, is actually NOT sold, but numbers SHIPPED. These companies use this tactic as a way to pad their numbers and sites like Joystiq eat it up because they want to push the agenda since it's to their interests. I was using the online numbers to compare to the shipped numbers to see a more realistic number of how many people actually BOUGHT a console over the holiday. It's not entirely accurate, but it's a good observation.

But you know I don't expect you people to understand. After all, everyone downvoted the only intelligent person that seems to know wth is going on around here.

My kids don't go online, they are too young. Most of the people I play on XBL with, have 2 or more Xbox 360's in their household.

But go ahead and ramble on about your conspiracy theories, and when you can't prove something, jump to a completely different topic, like how you feel Pee See gaming is superior to consoles. My i7-3930k laughs in your face.

The reason why I'm tired of dealing with consoles has nothing to do with PC hardware being superior to console hardware or anything like that. I'm tired of this gaming community. Really tired.
