Think New Super Mario Bros., but newer. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata assured investors today that a new 2D Super Mario game is in the works for 3DS, this one distinguished by its "side-scrolling action."
Iwata offered no further information about the game in his presentation, but expects it to launch sometime within Nintendo's next fiscal year. That places the new Mario's debut sometime after March 2012 -- just far enough to complete Super Mario 3D Land and yearn for the days when things were nice and flat.

how about with sprite or pixel art

@Coldbrand - I can get behind this. Mutant Mudds looks pretty awesome in 3D. That being said, I'm guessing that if Nintendo were to do this they'd probably use higher quality sprites than Mutant Mudds (charm be damned!)

Wow. Yet another Mario game for 3DS. How original Nintendo. Be careful, or you will burn your mascot out before he reaches retirement.

Mario prints money, along with Pokemon and Smash Bros.
Every major game publisher has one main franchise that outsells the rest: Activision's pride and joy is Call of Duty, Microsoft's pride and joy is Halo, Rockstar's pride and joy is GTA, etc.
If you don't like Mario games, that's fine, but don't come here to be a buzzkill.

Yeah instead I'll just wait for "shooter war of duty", a totally new franchise, you shoot guns and stuff in a military setting from a first person perspective.
It must be innovative cuz it's not a sequel! Cuz we all know innovation equals new characters.

I really wish they'd make Wario Land 5 and a Drill Dozer sequel instead of cooking up more creatively bankrupt New Super Mario Bros stuff.

Wow a new Mario game. I did not see that coming. Nintendo you just continue to surprise. Next you're going to tell me there are new Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Mario Party games in development. One of these days I'm going to figure out your plan....one day.

At the risk of putting a downer on this news (and I'll probably get crucified), I worry that they're releasing too many Mario games of late. Super Mario is my favourite franchise, but I don't want them to churn out too many in quick succession and lead to overkill (Sonic...), burn-out is death for franchises. It seems to have become a yearly release of late (something that other franchises are always criticized for). Having to wait for a new game (like we have for a new main Mario entry in the past) is a good thing, it makes it all the more special when it arrives. I don't have 3D Land yet because I've played a Mario every year for the past four, I've only just played the last one and I haven't built up a hunger for a new one yet (and by the time I do, they'll be another 3DS one and a Wii U one). I could understand if 3D Land bombed, but it's selling really well, so I am surprised by this announcement, particularly so soon. 3D Land could very well sell throughout the 3DS' life like NSMB DS did, in which case I don't see why they need to rush out another on the console.

I see where you're coming from there. Mario's my favorite franchise as well (tied with Sonic). But what's the problem when the games are guaranteed to be great? Every big franchise like Mario will have a dark spot (Hotel Mario, Sunshine?) eventually, that's just how it goes. Hell, even Sonic's doing alright now. If the games are good, keep things fresh, and are most of all, fun. Why worry about how fast they come out?

Keep milking it, Nintendo. Mario games aren't derivative and old or anything.
