My theory:

Ghost Recon Future Soldier on PC was never canceled. I think it was in development as a direct console port the whole time. Why? Because Ubisoft knew that, considering the previous Ghost Recon games on PC were first person and very slow-paced, unlike the third person and fast-paced Future Soldier. By saying the PC version was canceled and then put back into development at the last minute, they have provided themselves with an excuse for not following the tradition set by GRAW 1 and 2.

That's what this announcement makes me think. No corporation changes their standpoint from "95% of PC gamers are going to pirate our game so it's canceled for PC" to "We're releasing this game with no DRM" within two months.

I think it's more like one half of Ubisoft doesn't know what the other half is doing. One half is saying "PC gamers are a very important market," and the other half is saying "why would we put it out on PC if you're just going to steal it?"

And then there's the rest of them that are saying "Does this have enough DRM yet?" "No, not quite, throw in a condition that invalidates your activation if you plug in a USB stick."

@Co Yup been reading Joystiq since 2006. I am a hardcore gamer on PC and Steam has enough variety of games that will satisfy me in that I don't really need to go out and spend a few hundreds dollars, Plus my friends own those system so I just over to there place and play their games.

Surprise, There are PC-only gamers on joystiq, just as there are gamers that only play on Xbox or only play on PS3!

Just buy Xbox controller for your PC.
Its worth it.

Steam is very reasonable DRM.
Allows you to play offline, infinite installs, and a great security system developed by Valve. Steam is as much anti-DRM as it is DRM.

@Special Agent Steve

Steam has/is DRM, but occasionally a game will be available on Steam that stalls additonal DRM on your machine. Didn't From Dust initially include additional DRM, but Ubi stripped it out in an update?

I don't mind DRM as long as I get to pick which one I'm dealing with (Steam), and I don't have to wade through multiple flavors to play a single game.

no, the guy responsible for this game has his own semi-independently run studio within Ubi. his titles are relatively self funded with the income his studio generates on it's own.

since he's not indebted to their checkbook for every cup of coffee sipped, I'm guessing that he can ship games with whatever DRM he (does not) want.

You're welcome, JC. I saw that it was posted to their Facebook and immediately thought about Joystiq. I know I've been wanting a PC release, along with some friends, so I figured it'd be something the readers of Joystiq would be interested in as well.

But normally I agree with you, I hold out for PC for multiplats.

Despite not having interest in this game, I'm tempted to buy it just to show Ubisoft that DRM does nothing for them.

Someone's going to break your protection, don't punish your customers for that.

An ubisoft game without ridiculous DRM, is the world ending?

All kidding aside, I hope that this represents a new direction for the company as a whole. Tempted to get this, just to show them that this sort of thing pays. Don't screw your customers and they will do right by you.

This is probably a test since they don't expect high sales.... unfortunately like most single player pc games it will be pirated like crazy. See witcher 2, bulletstorm, etc. Its sad but its true. They will go back to old anti- pirating plans.

Thing is, depending on the part of the world where you happen to love, console games are pirated like crazy as well. Example: I know a very large pool of people who own an XBox in this corner of Europe simply because up until one year ago I used to work in a hardware shop. Our biggest moneymaker was modding XBox consoles. Everyone and their grandmother came in to have it modded as soon as they bought it, never mind that it voided the warranty.

Nowadays I make it a point to ask people if their console is modded or not when I learn they have one, simply because i get irrationally ticked-off when I see people saying 'oh, PC gamers are all dirty pirates and a PC game can never make a profit, unlike a console version.' I'll bet you anything that the vaunted, supposedly profitable console games make almost no profit in my country (and in fact in most of Eastern Europe) simply because the originals are gathering dust on the store shelves.

This game is so much fun. I am amazed at how well designed the levels are. Everything is timed just right. You know you've got it when you just flow though a level. Sweet gaming goodness.
