Square Enix has joined the ever-growing list of publishers to bring its classic titles to GOG.com. The first two Square-Enix titles to hit the service are Hitman: Codename 47 and Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition (2000 being the year in question). You can pick up either for $5.99 and $9.99 respectively.
GOG promises more Square Enix games to come. We'd expect most of those to come from Square's library of Eidos titles (Thief, anyone?), though the PC ports of Final Fantasy VII and VIII are a slim possibility. Slim.

You should buy Deus Ex, especially if you played Human Revolution without trying this one. It has its rough edges (particularly at the beginning, when you're just getting a feel for how things work), but it's probably the best game I played last year.
Also refer to the guide at http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/ for how to get it to work best on a modern computer. It might install Shifter, I don't really recall, but it definitely helps.

I wanted to love Deus Ex, but I couldn't stand the feel of the game. The guns felt like I was shooting laser tag guns; there was no (or poor) simulation of kickback, and the bad guys didn't react to damage until they fell over like mannequins.
I don't know. I loved the games that were similar to Deus Ex, and I loved the concept of Deus Ex, I love the influence Deus Ex had on the industry, but I just couldn't get into the actual game itself. A game can't only be good, it has to feel right.

*shrugs* I played it mostly using melee weapons, sneaking behind people to knock them out, honestly, so I didn't really experience the gunplay much. Sniper rifle works really well once you level up enough to minimize the swaying, though, so it's been getting a lot of use in my second playthrough.

It's not just you, actually. I have seen complaints that the gunplay is not the game's strongest suit, and they're not far off. I suppose the laser sight might help a bit, though. IIRC vanilla Deus Ex removes the sway outright if you have the laser sight enabled for a given gun, while Shifter lets you see precisely where a given shot will land (reimplementing the sway, so laser sights aren't hilariously overpowered, but still letting the laser sight be invaluably useful for lining up headshots).
But then, you can play the game without using guns at all, which is frankly quite awesome. I love how every situation in the game has at least two or three ways to approach it, all legitimate.

you have to remember that it's a fairly old game now, so animations aren't going to be top-notch. still, as i recall, the bodies falling over like that was made more plausible by the fact that you use non-lethal darts to tranquilize (read: shock) your targets. at least, that's how i always played. i wasn't really trying to go the run and gun approach.

This is neither here nor there, and it's barely a secret, but I was surprised to learn that gog.com is a Polish company operating in Warsaw. And it's because they're actually Polish (and not some kind of tax haven)! I'm even more impressed at the company's achievements now, as I'd expect it might be a little...challenging...for a company in eastern Europe to convince American companies to distribute their (albeit old) IP in a DRM-free format.

Ten dollars seems a bit high for DE1. I mean, I know it's CURRENTLY 10 on steam, but 10 for something that they gave out free on magazine demo discs, like, 10 years ago, seems high.

Considering that those FF games used pre-rendered backgrounds, blowing them up to a high resolution would be rather jarring, wouldn't it?
Unless they went out of their way to re-render every single pre-rendered background, which I kinda doubt.

Didn't Eidos handle the PC ports of Final Fantasy 7 and 8? It's a pretty real possibility we could see one of them show up soon if true.

Square released PC version of VII and VIII back when they were Squaresoft. A re-release of VII especially would make many fans happy, as VII had it's own bugs on that PC port. They both existed though, definitely not the same feel as on a console though.

But then George W. Bush will never let you hear the end of it :O
Although I can't disagree. I never did play Anachronox, but it sounded pretty fun, so I'd like to see it come over, too.

10 dollars for a digital download of a +10 year old game seems really steep. Mostly because the human revolution game was on sale on steam for a day at the price point of 15 dollars or something to that effect. 5 Seems a lot more reasonable, but I guess they're gunning on nostalgic people.

GOG has periodic sales, though, much like Steam does. If you don't like the price now, wait a little while and it'll probably go on sale for 30-50% off at least once before year's end. Managed to snag quite a few awesome games for cheap, that way.
