@nerdydesi1 - Sure but we didn't know before launch that it would be such a flop... It was however announced that it would contain a similar single use code.

Online Passes really suck for someone like me who only plays console games thanks to GameFly and other rental services. :(

I don't want to rent a game for $20 a month and then pay $10-15 one time just to play it online for a bit. At least drastically reduce the online price for rentals to $5 at most.

You know, it's only a matter of time until everyone needs a constant connection and an activation code to actually PLAY the game.

Who the fuk decided that new game buyers should be punished this way?

If I buy this game used at $20 six months from now, I can tolerate not having this feature. I'll treat it like DLC I never cared to have.

New game buyers are getting anally fisted here. I will not buy games that follow this business model.

Most commentors on Joystiq seem to think that taking 20 to 30 seconds to type in a code is some kind of game breaking deal.

@Arcaria Many of these codes had issues on launch day. Misprinted codes, no code, wrong console oriented code, authentication server glitches, etc.

That's not being friendly towards the person who just spent $60 on your game. No codes, no issues.

Corporations, you push back customers far enough, they will revolt and push back. None of you are doing anything remotely friendly to customers, only for your pocketbooks. Its not only the gaming industry, look at NetFlix and cell phone carriers for instance. This madness has got to stop!

Has no-one noticed the third bullet on that card?

So, is this the armor that you would receive for free from the demo of ME3? If so, is this a second method to attain the armor?

Or is it that you need to activate the code for the game, then play the demo of ME3, THEN you get the armor in this game?

I believe it's bad for a journalist to report something w/out clarifying it with all the parties involved in the story. To tell us that it's an "online pass" when the developers release a statement saying it was the first DLC to be coming out after game release, but they're giving it free to gamers who buy new and not used is neglect on your part. Adding the update at the bottom doesn't seem to have made the case better seeing as how a lot who were anticipating this game are claiming they will now not support it. Probably they just read the headline and sounded off. Who knows?

Either way, I'm a little disappointed.

@blessrok Well, its a blog so often blogs post before hearing back from everyone just because it can take so long to get a point clarified. They updated it and that is good journalism/blogging.

Plus, if you read that, it doesn't saying anything about this being free DLC. If I had read that I wouldn't have had any reason to think it wasn't like the Catwoman lockout in Arkham City.

I read correct

first from big huge: "We wanted to post a quick clarification for something we've seen a few comments about. For what it's worth, the House of Valor content was not in the finished game/disc at one point, then removed. It isn't there and we're locking you out of it. The House of Valor was created as stand-alone content, and was always intended to be the first DLC. Instead of holding onto it and charging for it later, we opted to give it to everyone who purchases the game new, for free, on launch day. We hope that helps clarify that point, at least."

second from EA: "The House of Valor quest line is free bonus content available to those who purchase a new copy of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by entering the Online Pass included with the game. PC players who purchase Reckoning at one of the many digital retailers online including Origin, Steam and more, will also receive the House of Valor quest line at no cost."

@blessrok Right, I apologize for not clarifying. What I meant by "read that" was the game insert they posted a picture at the head of this article of that says "Online Pass." Nowhere in that does it say this a bonus DLC thing to thank purchasers. Online Pass is associated with locking out content, like multiplayer mode or the Catwoman content of Arkham City.

See this kind of thing I can actually get behind. I hate the online pass when used on MP games, but the way it's being used on SP games isn't so bad. They're offering an enticement rather than punishing you for not paying full price. People get special editions of games for the extra content all the time and a lot of people would jump at buying the normal edition and getting free DLC.

Thats the way MP games with the online pass should be handled as well. Something like you get double the weapons or more gadgets and more perks. At worst it should be something like you're limited to very few weapons, items, perks and etc. But under no circumstance should you be completely locked out of MP.

Wow. Talk about arguing semantics. You are shipping a game with content locked from people who buy it used. It doesn't matter how you try to sugar coat it.

Online passes reduce the resale value of a game. I'm buying this used and I'm personally happy they did this because now I can get it cheaper. With a game this large and repetitive, who cares about 7 quests? The funny thing is that the people this hurts the most are those who buy it new and want to sell it when done. These online passes generally lower the resale by $5 to $10.

In my opinion, this is a really stupid move on their part. They are trying to build a new franchise. The stupidest thing they can do is try some cheap BS to screw over their paying customers hoping to cash a few extra bucks on the front end. This irritates the hardcore gamers and creates a lot of negative press. Just dumb imo.

Can they at least change the name at this point, and call it something relevant? Online Pass for a game with no online to speak of is kind of dumb. Call it the Extra Content Pass and address the elephant.

And thats how they choose to justify themselves? Admitting that the project is done but holding it out to make it DLC?
OK.
My new hobby will be building miniature train sets. At least I wont have to buy a specific code in order to start my mini train engine if I get the set used.

#$%# you. No. Seriously. #$%# you. If you're going to call me a thief for disagreeing with you, then I can say #$%# you. I'm tired of you finger waggling folks telling me how wrong I am because of the way things used to be, much less calling me a thief because when I open the goddamn box, I expect a full #$%#ing game.

I come from a generation of games who bought their games on cartridges. Back then people had to CONSTANTLY test their games, and make sure they were ready. They had to be content rich, and long lasting. Word of mouth was the only way you sold games, rather than paying off reviewers for the holy 9 out of 10 grail.

Online Passes are also the best way to monopolize the Rental Industry. Yes, that's an ENTIRE industry gone to dog dingus. How about Used Game places? You seem to think all this money is rolling into the devs coffers! Take a look at the reports, IT GOES TO THE PUBLISHER, then the Devs get their cut and royalties. That's all, that's it. THE BULK. GOES. TO. THE. PUBLISHER.

To me the publishers are going about this backwards.

The quickest way to kill, or at least make it somewhat irrelevent, the used game market is to lower the price. If the price is reasonable enough that someone could go into a store and pickup a game without worrying about how I am going to pay for it then you'll get more new used sales. I'm constantly waiting to finish games so I can trade them in to defer some of the cost of the new game(s). It has nothing to do with truly being able to afford it (i.e. making enough money) it's simply maximizing the ability to reduce cost. Also, you'll probably get better sales on a lot different games as well. I know for me, there were more then a few games that I would have given a shot if the price was more reasonable. But when said price was actually more reasonable, many moons later, I was onto something else by then. This is known as and what they are losing is the impulse buy.

Them locking things away behind codes (especially parts of the real game) to try to entice used buyers to buy new isn't going to work in the long run. If anything, I think in the long run they'll alienate the new buyers more then they will defer the used. The used game stores will simply compensate to the extra charge either buy lowering their used prices, since they make quite the profit on them currently, or lower the amount of the trade in that people get. They will do everything they can not to inconveniece their real customer, the used buyer, as much as possible because that is where there money is. Whereas the publishers, at this point are are doing everything in their power to piss off their real customers, the new buyers. But I guess that is nothing new for them, see DRMs.

@(Unverified) - Lowering the price of new games isn't going to have a significant effect on the used game market because used game stores will just lower the price of used games to compensate.

Oh I get it now. All the hate for this game that joystiq has tried to spread makes sense now. Its EA published. It all makes sense. For those of you who hate EA and online passes, dont forget other companies do it too. Twisted Metal is going to have one as well, but just watch how joystiq gives it a perfect score. Kingdom will come out and joystiq will give it a meh score, based on the pass and EA, not actual game play.

They mentioned this pass will be in the PS3 version, 360 version, and the PC version if you ordered it through a digital distribution service like Steam or Origin. But what if you buy the PC version retail? Will this online pass still be included? If not then that blows because I was buying my copy retail.

But... but... isn't it a single player game? Oh, right... *looks at Batman: Arkham City*

I'm tellin' ya, mark my words... one of these days you're going to be playing a single player EA game, beat the final boss and, 'cuz you bought it used, you'll see a black screen that reads "Activate/Purchase Online Pass" instead of an ending cinematic.
