Ono: Fighting games should have more customization, user creation
25
Yoshinori Ono is the Grand Poobah of all things Street Fighter these days, and it would be hard to pinpoint a single person who currently has more of an impact on the direction of the fighting game genre than he does. That direction, it turns out, looks an awful lot like some of the changes implemented in Street Fighter X Tekken, namely the Gem system and everything it stands for.
"For future titles I want to keep having this concept of, my character is different than your character," Ono said during an interview with Eurogamer. "In fighting games, the only difference between me and you is how good I am. But what I want to do with fighting games from now on is add in that element of customisation [sic], where I can have a Ryu that's different than your Ryu, so we can compete on a different level than just our execution."
Ono envisions a future where players can modify their characters on a deeper level than SFxT's Gem system allows for. "It would be like, the Ryu that Yoshinori Ono made is the best, or the Ryu that other guy made sucks." Ono did not go into any specifics regarding future titles, but it's clear that he wants to steer the Street Fighter series away from the character selection screen and toward the stat tree.

Hmmmm. I was all against this as a concept initially but I realised it's already been done to a degree already. You can already choose your different ultras in SSFIV and in games like CvS1 and 2 you have different grooves. The issue I think depends on how you can customise the characters and the added issues of balance they bring along. It's hard enough balancing characters as it is without throwing player customisation into the mix (beyond superficial changes that is). Be interested to see how they take this.
It's all probably just an excuse to release another iteration though in reality :(.

Yeah that sounds awesome.. Just toss "balance" out the frigin window, that should make for and awesome and not-frustrating-at-all experience where absolutely nobody gravitates towards the commonly accepted uber-builds.. cuz no one abused Cable in MvC2.
...awesome. (sigh)

I personaly think this line of thinking is all thanks to Dissidia. Which is understandable, considering all the customization it allowed.
I may be a sucker for anything with RPG elements in them, but Dissidia was the only fighting game I cared about this last decade.
I'm not saying the big series like SF, Tekken, MvC and SC are bad in any way, but the latest releases are essentially tweeked versions of their predocessors.
I think Dissidia was really underappreciated for all the inovation it presented.

@DjiegoMoz Dissidia and Budokai are the only fighting games I've ever really cared about, because they are just pure fun with plenty to do.

Knowing Capcom, "customization room" will be a day-1 DLC.

The more that I hear from Ono the more I like him as a producer/developer. He's almost a Japanese version of Jaffe, at least in terms of accessibility and speaking his mind, which are both characteristics I greatly appreciate from a developer.
Now where's my SFXT Vita release date!

He should just make the next Super Smash Bros game at this rate. The hardcore fighting community seems to already despise him enough, especially after the extra character announcements yesterday. I'm totally on board for the completely inane-looking SFxT, though still on the board about the Vita.

The window dressing is all well and good, but what fighting games have needed for 20+ years is more intuitive controls -- period.

I like how King of Fighters XIII lets you customize the fighter's colors... And I like the idea of outfit swapping in this game... But that's as far as I would go with a fighting game.
I seriously don't want the ability to change a characters health, damage output, speed, or move set. Its all about creating balanced characters CAPCOM.

I only wish the GEM system added different visual effects, instead of gameplay changing effects.
It would be cool if you say had a "lightning gem" where you could replace Ken's flaming uppercut with lightning instead. I really don't like the sound of this gem system, and the fact that they are making it possible to buy gems. Shouldn't all of them just be an unlockable?
