I liked the first Suikoden better. Must have played through it at least three times. Something about II just missed the mark for me, and I haven't played any of the series since then (aside from starting and not getting very far in Tactics, which still sits on my dusty shelf of unfinished JRPGs).

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. While I love Suikoden 2, it is hardly the greatest JRPG of all time. But since this is nothing more than a few paragraphs of opinion, it doesn't really matter.

@geniuswithagun

There is no legal gray area--this is straight up illegal. It sucks that there isn't a reasonable way to legitimately obtain this game now, but that doesn't mean pirating it is okay. I hate SOPA as much as anyone here, but piracy like this is the reason SOPA came into existence to begin with.

It's sad to see you go.

I saw the headline and immediately thought of MY series, Suikoden. I looked at the photo, and of course rightfully so, you named it! The series is the king of RPGs in my eyes, the best series I have ever played. Such an emotional ride for me when I was young, one of the best times of my life.

Does the main character actually qualify as a silent protagonist? You choose his actions in dialog, and they are written out like vocalized responses.

I can't say I will miss your articles too much. Most of them seemed like troll bait, some others were just not worth the read but there were maybe two that I felt were really good and had a point people could talk about without just getting into flame wars.

That said, I haven't played any of the games in this series, so I hope they're available on PSN so I can when I get my PSv

I thought 3 and 5 were better, but I also can't argue against anyone who thinks 2 was better.

Perhaps part of it is the timing - just a little bit after FF7 came out and we were drowning in horrible 3D rpgs - at that time Suikoden 2 was a godsend.

@Oldtaku

3 would have been better.. if the load times were not so so absolutely horrible. SKIII goes down as the only game I got bored with playing due to load times. For real.

5 was a lot of fun, but I honestly don't even remember what the story was about. They brought the gameplay back to it's roots, and I did enjoy the story it just wasn't that memorable for me.

I still hold out hope that Konami hasn't abandoned this series, but I'm also afraid the 'next' iteration needs to be much more than a straight up sequel but too much/too strange innovation might ruin it for me. I don't know.

Unfortunately, they haven't 'abandoned' it, but they've marginalized it to crappy handheld and web releases. These days Konami isn't doing anything for console that isn't Metal Gear or Zone of Enders.

What can I say? YOU Sir, YOU REALLY know about videogames. Genso Suikoden II is the deepest and most enjoyable JRPG ever. It's one of my three favorite videogames (Metal Gear Solid 4, Vagrant Story, Genso Suikoden II - in no order). It's very frustrating seeing this great jewel without the recognition it deserves. You made me very happy today. BEST WISHES.

By the way, check out my avatar :).

@James816

The legality here is clear, but the morality isn't. How immoral is it to download something like this if it is not reasonably obtainable by legal means? The main reason behind any gamer buying games should be to benefit the developer, but at this point any money spent on this game will never trickle down to the people who poured their soul into making it. Furthermore, when a law conflicts with common morality, then the law is failing in its purpose, no?

On the other hand, if I spent a lot of effort making something and 13 years later there were some people that wanted to enjoy my work but couldn't find a legitmate means to do so, then I would want them to by illegimate means.

This is also how I feel with anime. I hate going to fan subs, because I know the makers of the work don't get any money from those, but there are still a lot of series out there which you can't really watch any other way.
I support legal means 100%- I have subs to Netflix/Hulu Plus, I support CrunchyRoll, and I have like 180 games on Steam, but I still think there are times where stuff like this isn't morally apprehensible.

Don't misunderstand my position. Although I don't condone piracy, you could certainly say I understand it, at least after other options have been exhausted. What I absolutely cannot support, though, is someone to comment on Joystiq with a link to download the game, and to claim it's perfectly fine and good because SOPA has been defeated. This person is spreading misinformation and missing the point entirely.

Playing through Suikoden one and getting the best ending before playing Suikoden II (and loading the corresponding save) gives you access to the best sidequest/extra character in a videogame. Making the run to Gregminster every time was a pain in the ass, but so worth it.
