Mojang's Jens Bergensten apologized for the slur and encouraged fans to check the new translation via Crowdin -- the Afrikaans home screen now reads "enkelspeler," which translates to "single player," as it should.
Minecraft language update inadvertently contained racial slur (but it's fixed now)

Minecraft has demonstrated some magnificent feats of community creation, but now it's also offering a lesson in the volatile side of crowd-sourcing. Changing the language to Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa and Namibia, yesterday caused the title screen to display the phrase "You are a NIGGER." As Minecraft Forums user EgXPlayer commented, "Thats racist."

@Liquidfingers The world is full of people who are too busy adjusting the stick up their ass to sit properly than to take a joke and laugh and realize that the words aren't the problem, it's the people who abuse their use and just say them for the sake of saying it.

@drhitts you do realize that south Africa is pro dominantly white right? Hell a PERFECT example of his comment is the luddy the editor of this site. He lived in Africa up until a month or so ago and he's white so...

Maybe I dont get it because the first comment got deleted but... what do you mean by "pro dominantly white"?. At first I thought it meant that the majority of the population was white, but that seems not to be true.

South Africa demographics
79.4% black african
9.2% white

Where have you been since the apartheid? I mean even though that was ended at least 15 years ago, just like official segregation in America, once that ended, there's still an enormous amount of social and political segregation which leads in favor of the white people, such as the British or Afrikaners.

Not sure i follow. So "Crowd-Sourcing" means leaving it up to the community to do something? (In this case, translating) Then one user of said community went and inappropriately sabotaged this individual project?

What I don't understand is if this was EA, Activision, or any other large publisher, people would be having a field day with something like this, but with Minecraft people just "giggle."Tell me how that makes sense?

@thechaos you don't really need someone to explain the difference between a publicly-traded corporation that can staff whole teams for localization and a small collective of self-made programmers learning as they go, do you?

Because EA and Activision are large publishing houses that likely have more money in their QA departments than Mojang has in its entirety. Not to mention either one should have in theory more people working in said QA department than the whole of Mojangs 14 employees.
And lastly because Mojang still has a soul.
When they are a massive multibillion dollar company with a track record of being fairly anti consumer .... they won't be getting the same slack cut them as they are now.

@(Unverified) I am talking about fans and people who comment on forums and articles like this. You don't need me to explain to you the difference between Shareholders and Immature jackasses who let this get swept under the rug because of a biased double standard, do you?

I certainly wouldn't say hate large publishers but you did start by naming two of the biggest jerks in the industry so you really biased your own question there.
There are several publishers I have no problem with, I might even go as far as saying I like.
Simply put No I don't necessarily hold smaller indie developers to the same standards I would hold a large publisher. Because by in large they do not have the same scope of resources.
This was caused by one bad egg in a community driven effort to provide localized translations of the game for as many languages as possible (which right there is more than most publishers attempt) and caught by the community before it ever made a live update.
We aren't exactly talking "hot coffee" here where the content was intentionally added to the game then blocked, found, denied and then initially blamed on the person who found it... before finally admitted to.
And even after all that I forgave Rockstar.

@antv Let me know when you find a team of localization experts who know every language and can work for two grand.
