First screenshot of The Amazing Spider-Man is pretty boring
64
We're not sure the first screenshot for Activision and Beenox's The Amazing Spider-Man lives up to its name -- sure, Spidey's suit has a detailed, texturized-rubber look and he most certainly is perched very high up, on top of a skyscraper, but those details should be a given. We get it; he's Spider-Man. But how does he function in The Amazing Spider-Man? How do his maneuvers and attacks compare to the Hollywood film this game is tied to? Does his face resemble Andrew Garfield's?
We're able to glean more information from December's trailer, of course, but if the first screenshot wasn't going to be action-packed, at least it could have been artistic.

Agreed. Pretty vibrant visualization. Very Mirror's Edge, as said below.

i agree, but apparently the writer of this article wants it to be more like the impending movie...which is probably not a good thing.

@eat it I agree. I've read dozens of articles on this site about how the spiderman games all suck now because they don't have an open big city swinging through skyscrapers feeling. Now they complain when the first screen points to delivering just that. I think the writers of this site just like whining.

@Shadowbender Actually, Mirror's Edge was the first thing I thought of too, and I'm not sure if I like that. Feels a bit too stark or sterile for Spider-man. I would think that they would want to add some "pop" to the city's flavor, try to make it more vibrant. You know what I mean?

@eliteghost Aha, you thought when they said Spider-Man would clean up the city, they were speaking metaphorically! You'll be blown away by the scrubbing QTE missions.

I like the suit. Hopefully the game plays like the ps2 spider-man game that everybody seems to love.

Just wondering, is this the Wii version? The buildings are very bland and poorly detailed. Almost Prototype level of bland.

@KungFuChaosNinja No, it's the "oh shit Activision only gave us 9 months to create a scale version of New York" version.

I'm just glad everything looks properly open again for a spider-man game. Last ones felt way too claustrophobic for a character designed as he is.

Am I the only one not looking forward to this relaunch? As hit or miss as toby mcquires version was it satisfied my spiderman movie penchant. They should of focused on another hero instead of relaunching a franchise that was already huge in the last ten years.

I believe the reason for them doing a reboot has to do with the Avengers movie. The original Spidey movies weren't actually based in the "Marvel Universe" like the other hero movies were. This leads me to suspect that they are going to have him in the Avengers 2 whenever it comes out. Afterall Spiderman did join the Avengers kinda late in some of the comics as well.

@Adeio Unfortunately, that's not the case. Columbia still owns the film rights to Spider-Man, and Fox still owns the film rights for the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. Every time you hear a Fox announcement about a new Fantastic Four film (which happens every couple of years), it's just to renew their claim on the property. They're just sitting on it so no one else can have any success with it.

After hearing Raimi's plans for Spider-Man 4 (the boring and lame Vulture would have been the main villain, and Felicia Hardy would be in it as his daughter, the Vulturess, rather than the Black Cat), I'm really glad SM4 didn't get produced. I would say we dodged a bullet.
Plus, Raimi bastardized Venom. With the reboot, we have a chance to see Eddie done right.

such a shame. it would be great if Marvel were able to make movies with all their properties. i take it the new shitfest known as Ghostrider 2 is also not an official Marvel movie?

Dull screenshot for a dull character/game. Don't see the problem, it's not like this is Batman.

@Vic Fontaine imho Arkham City left me feeling unsatisfied. I'm not sure what it was missing, but it was something huge, because by the end credits I felt like I didn't have the best time of my life. I think I had more fun with Arkham Asylum.
Anyways, I don't think Spiderman is boring and as long as this is open world (like everyone's mentioned) and in the vein of Spiderman 2 then I'm all for it.

The real question is "Is it going to be open world?" These games are never *that* great but at least the open world ones are fun to web swing around.

Beat me to it, that's exactly what I was thinking. For a superhero who is supposed to make his clothes in his room in his mom's (or is it aunt?) basement, that doesn't look right at all.
Also the webbing on the suit is red, not black. Wow.

Does this even need to be said? You know they will, and you know that they'll be unlockable at only $4.99 apiece!
Pissed me off when Arkham City was like that, but at least that was a good game/character (though in some ways that makes it worse).

@Vic Fontaine I get *enjoying* Batman more than Spider-Man (I think I do, too), but Batman a better *character* than Spider-Man? At this point, "brooding vigilante" is as generic as a character can get. In fact, I'd argue that the shallowness of the Batman character is why he makes such a good video game avatar -- he's enough of a cipher that the player can project himself onto him.

Marvel might have a better grasp on the movie space (except the Batman movies which are the best overall) but DC totally has them beat in the gaming realm. DC got that comic book related gamesHAVE TO STOP BEING BASED ON MOVIES. This causes unecessary deadlines and poor final products. Also, they have to stop using Activision and Sega fro their games, as all the marvel games these guys produced have been failures. The best spiderman game of the last 5 years was worse that any mediocre action platformer.
DC already announced that going forward, all the studios will focus on comic based games (not movie) to ensure the best quality possible.

stop being Marvel fanboys, get your facts straight and don't rehash ages old game examples.
In case you don't know, WB opened a studio in Montreal (north America's gaming capital) with the sole purpose of developing AAA DC comics franchise games based on the comics, not the movies or animated series. This new studio, along with Rocksteady, will rock the comic based gaming space. Using superman 64 as an example of bad gaming is idiotic at this point. The game came out 2 generations ago!! Marvel's NEW games are utter thrash. I don't know what's worse between the horrible Spiderman, xmen, Thor or iron man games. the last OK game they released was xmen legends.
To be fair, i'm a huge fan of marvel vs capcom, but that game is an exception and marvel went out of their way to try and ruin it by including crap "current" characters instead of fan favorites like Venom and Cyclops.

X-Men Legends 1 and 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Spiderman-2, Web of Shadows, and to a lesser extent Shattered Dimensions, recent Captain America, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and X-men origins: Wolverine.
All pretty decent games.

xmen legends was good but it's last gen. DC also had a similar Justice League that was even better but once again, last gen. Lets try to stick to games from the last 5 years at least. The Ultimate alliance games rehashed last gen engines, the last 2 Spiderman games from Beenox were bad and worse (and i really wanted games featuring spidey 2099 to be good). Wolverine was ok but again, like Spiderman, these are low-end adventure games. if they weren't starring heroes you like, you'd never even consider playing them. Your low standards is what allows Marvel to get away with licensing garbage games

sure, i am a Marvel fanboy (did the icon give it away?) but it's not like i hate DC. to be honest, i have been falling in love with graphic novels all over again simply because of all the awesome stuff on Vertigo that i somehow missed out on. all i was trying to say is that, besides Batman: AA and AC, there is nothing that DC really has going for it in the gaming sector, and even their old games are exceptionally bad.
from what i've heard pretty much unanimously, DC Universe is a complete disaster of an MMO game, and sure i've heard talk of this new DC studio, but i'll believe the hype when i see the quality games. thus far, i'm just speaking about games on the whole, and in that regard, Marvel has a larger amount of decent to good games, while DC has two fantastic ones with the same hero. due to how much i enjoyed those two fantastic games, i'm willing to say that DC is doing better game-wise, but i'm not really willing to say that they have anything else going for them besides Batman, and pretty soon they're going to need it. in the meantime, i'll just be over here waiting for Marvel to put out something as good as the Batman games...
one can only hope, right?
