I really hope theres some kind of update for the console Kinect. i have a decent sized space in my apartment, but it still has trouble tracking my daughter and myself when we play some of the games together.

That near mode and improved tracking would do wonders for many users that have tight living quarters as well.

@KiDPANDA - There's probably very little that they can do short of new (and likely more expensive) hardware, which if the rumours are true and a new console is less than two years away, wouldn't make sense to do this generation.

I think the best way to solve this mystery is to crack one open and compare the internal hardware with that of the Xbox version of Kinect. If they're both the same, it could be upgraded with a firmware update, or software. if they're drastically different we'll have to wait till next generation.

Why not? They can just take the Windows version and have a firmware patch so it's compatible with the Xbox 360.

All they need to do is release a firmware patch that makes the Xbox 360 recognize the Windows Kinect.

I don't think they'll do anything with the current console version of Kinect. But I think the XBox 720 will come standard with an upraded Kinect 2.0 of sorts.

My theory right now is that the new 720 will be launch with a new version of Kinect but also have a compatibility with current Kinect hardware. So that current owners of the hardware could save money and buy just the 720, while new customers could buy the 720 and Kinect 2.0 bundle together.
Functionality would remain largely the same, and wouldn't necessarily split the user base between 2.0 and 1.0 users.

Yeah, right! Console accessories... the more things change the more they stay the same.

See: 32X, Sega CD, N64DD, hard drives, and basically every single controller ever.

Wow, $250. Isn't that like double what the 360 version costs? How is Microsoft justifying that? A few added features like near mode?

@Hoops Based on the description, it sounds like they just put in much better versions of the sensors that are better at picking up audio/higher quality video.

Give it a week and someone will have a comparison version up...

A) pc kinect has better parts
B) MS doesn't make that much money off sales from the kinect unit. Profit is made through selling games for it. Kinect games aren't availible for the pc version, so they raised the price to make up for that fact.

On a game note, I want Road Rash for Kinect. Jacking weapons and kicking bikes away. -- make it so

Two questions.

Can this be used with the Xbox?

Is this worth buying now or waiting until Windows 8?

Personally I see a few things happening here. Windows 8 will be completely Kinect-ready and try to do something similar to Games for Windows Live by opening a digital platform/app store similar to Steam, Origin, and the Mac app store with Live integration... not right away, but I just see it right around the corner. Microsoft will eventually get Kinect small enough to take over the place of where most internal webcams sit in laptops now.

Gonna be great.

I like the way you think! If Win 8 is fully Kinect ready then I'll pick one up then. Till then though I couldn't justify $150 to get this for my Xbox so $250 for my computer seems even less likely.

Windows 8 has a built in store for apps that use the metro style. They've also stated that windows 8 is going to have built in LIVE functionality so it wouldn't be surprising to see LIVE enabled games being sold through the store.

It would probably require MS to pay them, just like they did for kinect on XBox.

to be fair now kinect is 'officially' out for windows...it's been useable on PC since its release.

This is overpriced on purpose to encourage "enterprise" use. You will start seeing Kinect watching you in public and at your workplace.

The "start-up fund" is to encourage people to come up with legitimate-sounding reasons why these cameras need to be in all places.

"Gaming" sounded like a legitimate reason for the device before anyone tried it out... Next, the plan is to pretend Kinect can help you use your tablet or smartphone somehow.

Does the Windows Kinect work with the Xbox 360?

Does the Xbox 360 Kinect work with Windows?

If the answer to both questions is "YES", then what's the point of having 2 separate devices?

I seem to remember reading a while back that each Kinect unit costs about $70 to manufacture. So yeah, Microsoft is making a killing on the device.

People focus on the 360 Kinect having patches and the like to improve/ resolve issues.

I'm no engineer but from the start, the Kinects capabilities are bottlenecked by the 360 itself. There is not enough Ram, processing power etc. in order to accommodate what the Kinect is truly intended to do. Ok ao they'll add features but people can stop looking for that Minority Report feel or expect the PC version to be compatible with the 360. (I may be wrong, but on paper, I feel correct)

I like all the users giving out excuses to why MS are charging so much more for the Windows Kinect. No wonder MS didn't give any reasoning for it, they know the consumers are dumb enough to lie for them and justify everything without even bothering.

By the way, Kinect costs $56 to manufacture. It's all over the Internet. Even $150 is too much for the Kinect, let alone $250.

@Teeree manufactureing is only a small part of selling a product. You need to consider other factors such as marketing, distribution, and retailer mark-up.

Personally, all I want out of my Kinect is for it to work better when I'm sitting in a chair. Right now I can navigate the dashboard pretty clumsily, but games don't work at all when you're sitting. There are many games that don't require the use of my legs. I would use my Kinect 10x more often if I could play those games from my chair.

Well, the reason it doesn't work sitting down is because it's designed to recognize people in a standing position. It's encoded in the software.

I can't believe Microsoft though Kinect for Windows was actually a viable enough product. Am I not seeing something here? I honestly assumed that Kinect and Move were just panicky last minute attempts to make the Xbox 360 and PS3 LESS functional and LESS fun, so that Wii owners wouldn't be the only ones complaining about gimmicky, crappy, novelty games no one wants to play. I also kind of thought that the Kinect and Move units were secretly developed by the "Software Bargain Bin Cabal" in hopes to sell more of those cage-like bargain bins to places like Target and Walmart to house all of the terrible software made for these devices. If someone can prove me wrong, please do, and while flaming me, please list 5 MUST PLAY games for the Kinect and Move.

"I can't believe Microsoft though Kinect for Windows was actually a viable enough product."

It's viable for numerous research projects and industries, just not for your typical WinPC user. Having official OS support and a soon-to-be-released SDK will be a boon for people who've been trying to integrate connect into their works (think robots, geology, and so forth).

Summary: Microsoft doesn't want, or doesn't care about, games on Windows. Thus, they price their product higher (potentially out of general consumer range) and try to dissuade game development...

...'cause in their perfect world, everyone would own an xbox and a PC, and pay them money on every overpriced copy sold on their closed system.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it (literally). Game on, Windows developers! Let's see some innovation!
