I don't play a whole lot of games during the school semester, but right now my Summer is gonna start with a bang between this and Xenoblade.

@MasterBrief I preordered, it should be delivered in a few hours but I'll still have to wait for it to be delivered to my country T_T

I absolutely loved the demo and the reviews just make me feel good about the decision I made to preorder it, I've only done that with 2 games (Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3).

Let's hope it pays off :D

Did you finish skyrim already? I'm holding off on Skyrim myself because I know I won't be responsible keeping up with classes, and I'm working my way up through Morrowind and Oblivion first (picked em both up for 30 bucks total!). While decent games (Oblivion is much more entertaining than Morrowing, imo), I know Skyrim would be too much to resist.

OP: I can't afford anything other than bills bills bills myself, which is a shame because I would have enjoyed snapping up the collector's edition package. I've been excited about this universe from the beginning and am very glad to see the product is worthwhile.

Yeah, the release timing of this game is not good for 38 Studios.

I'm 65 hours into Skyrim, and I've barely scratched the surface. I've probably got another couple of months on this title, and when I'm done I'm going to need a fantasy RPG break.

And when I'm ready to go again, there's a good chance I'm going to have to choose between Reckoning and Diablo 3.

By the time I get to Reckoning, this game is probable going to be a lot cheaper/less profitable.

This game combines Japanese console ARPG gameplay (PSO/ PSU and Monster Hunter) with Western RPG activities. There is no other game that does this. My only gripe is the character creator not having many sliders.

I have yet to see a review that has captured what about Amalur makes it a "must-play" title. I've read a handful and they all seem to agree it is a long power-fantasy with pretty good combat. Is that our high water mark these days?

It's a smart combination of borrowed systems, for sure, but will it be memorable in two years? One? What about it is fresh? Does the lore stand on its own merits against the behemoths of Elder Scrolls and Warcraft? Is there a meaning to any of the journey? Does the combat evolve beyond "this is magic, these are swords, try them both"?

I know the world will downvote me for this, but I don't get it. Is one long distraction from life the pinnacle of what gamers want, or am I missing something?

Re-reading this, it sounds a little bitter. That's not really my intent.

Glancing back over the review I've found something simple to illustrate my point:
"Quests can become repetitive, though nearly all of them are optional."

So what's the point of having so many quests if they become repetitive? Going by what I played in the demo, there isn't much in the game other than quests and crafting. If the quests are repetitive (and optional), isn't the entire game? That's my disconnect in a nutshell.

That seems to be the convention of most open-world games (e.g., GTA, Skyrim, Fallout, etc.). The main narrative is stitched together with optional quests. If you're unfamiliar with the concept, or unreceptive to it, maybe you should look into a different genre for your gaming fix?

@Electrium Well sure, but that can be said of Elder Scrolls, as well. Or at least Skyrim, as I never made it through Oblivion or any previous Elder Scrolls game. Outside of the main storyline the other quests are all entirely optional. Pretty standard in an open world RPG. Unless I misunderstand the point you are trying to make?

I think those are fair questions. Of course you got downvoted for having a your own POV. For me I'd want to know what makes this different than say Skyrim. What it does better or worse. Frankly if it's just art, and a slight difference in combat I don't see myself buying this game, at least not anytime soon. I expect I'll be playing Skyrim on and off for a year at least.

I don't have a lot of time, so having one open-world RPG on my list at a time is fine with me. ME is at least a scifi/space RPG, so it's different in that way. I usually like to have one game of each type (genre) at a time on my list - RPG, FPS, racing, etc.

Wait...what? Have you seen videos of the combat in Amalur compared to Skyrim? I don't even know how you would think they are anything similar.

Amalur is the Fable 2 that I have been waiting for.

Fundamentally, your comment doesn't disagree with mine. I'm perfectly receptive of the concept of an open-world game. I've played those excellent games you listed and that's exactly why I'm having trouble seeing what makes Amalur a definite yes on the "should I play it" scale.

This review, among others, doesn't indicate what about Amalur makes it a unique, must-play title. Considering I've only recently finished dropping 70 hours of my precious time into Skyrim this winter, it's going to take something really special to make me do that whole thing over again. I'm looking for something more than copying and pasting from other games I've already played.

Yeah, my expectations are high, sure. But in the past few months I've played Skyrim and Deus Ex, and I've replayed Catherine and Mass Effect 2. I really want to know how the bar gets raised by this game.

It can be argued that all games are just a distraction from life, regardless of genre or style. I'm not understanding why you're holding this particular game up to need to meet a higher level of expectation or need for it to deliver more. In many ways pretty much every game out there borrows from others in it's genre. The review says it's an enjoyable game, with a lush world and great combat. It has relatively unique style and story & adds something somewhat new to the open world RPG market. If it's enjoyable, that is as high as the bar needs to be - in my humble option. Regardless of whether a game is earth shatteringly new and advanced or not, the only thing I'm looking for at the end of the day, is whether or not I like playing it. Of course whether or not it's enjoyble will come down to personal taste, but it having all the trapings of other RPGs wrapped up in a new world doesn't - to me - detract from it's potential enjoyability.

The bar doesn't get raised by this game. That, in a way, is the point. The game is a solid power fantasy. If that's your joy, then you will not be disappointed.

And, I know it says it is Open World, but it is not open world in the way Skyrim is. There are walls, there is much terrain you can see but can't go to. There's an immense long thread on the KoA forums discussing what Open World really means. For TES players, it's the ability to go anywhere you can see and do anything you can think up. For KoA, it appears to be the ability to wander from the Main Quest and never look back. If you are expecting the former, you may be ticked off to find it is the latter.

ATM, I've only played the demo, so I don't know how far reaching the wall effect is and whether past the first story area (after the escape), the terrain opens up more and the walls go farther out. Did that spoil my enjoyment of the game. Nope, not at all. But don't go into KoA expecting the great unfettered world of Skyrim. This is not a Skyrim wannabe.

@Electrium From what I've been reading based on the "Must Buy" level of rating this review seems to have a disconnect between it and the score. I am not judging this game, I have played the demo and thought it was okay. Got to the "and now you can play for 45 minutes" bit and walked away. It wasn't bad it's just a case of too many good things and not enough time. It didn't pull me in, now it's the first in what they hope is a series and I will admit I have some bias against it based on McFarlane's involvement (I just don't like the guy) but setting aside my opinion looking at this review (which glosses over faults that should have bumped it to a 4.5) and combining it with other reviews even by people who had high hopes and were let down by the end product it should really be around a 3.5 to a 4.5 (fair to great) based on who you are talking. There's not alot that sets it apart, my feel when I played the game was Skyrim meets Fable 2 not a BAD thing but nothing that's really too entirely new. Not every game has to reinvent the wheel though. Any how, I hope those who are in to this thing enjoy it. I'll probably pick it up in a few months after I've wrapped up ME3 and a couple of other games I've got on backlog but I have to say, especially given the epic technical difficulties I had with the demo released a few weeks back (like literally 3 I think not long ago) I will wait.

I just love how this game came out of nowhere. It could have slipped under the radar and get overshadowed by the big name sequels. But thanks to a clever demo tie-in and huge word of mouth buzz, it's now a sleeper hit in the making.

I think he makes a fine point...judging a game that can have upto 100+ hours can take more then a few 4 to make a good judgement...in some rpgs, 4 hours youve barely left the tutorial.

My first 4 hours of Skryim ld barely arrived in Whiterun.

haha, that may be.

That being said, like most initial reviews, its always rated higher than it should be. I think a lot of people after the novelty of the game wears off will see that, just like what happens with other titles. (I'm sure we can all think of some)
While this game is a lot of fun, nothing in it is truly remarkable, and therefore I don't think its worthy of a perfect score, it deserves a good score, but not perfect..
I think when the end of the year comes around this game won't be in anyone's thoughts as to one of the standout titles of the year...unless this turns out to be a shitty year of games, which doesn't seem to be the case.

I know I can't claim to have spent as much time as the reviewer, but lets also keep in mind this person probably didn't put in as much time as they should have for reviewing something of this scale. It certainly wouldn't be the first time. Also just because I spent less time doesn't make me wrong. Time will tell I suppose. I still stand by what said ,so far: Fun game, definitely doesn't deserve a perfect score. (Personally I think a 3.5 or 4 would be a better fit, based on how they use their scale.)

@Meghterb1985 It takes open world gameplay, adds in actually good combat with a fun narrative and gorgeous stylized graphics. Wtf is your idea of a 5 star game if not this? LOL. I'm sorry if you PERSONALLY don't love the game. However, if you can't see this as being 5 star material there's something seriously wrong with your ability to judge things from an unbiased perspective. There are plenty of games out there that I don't like, but I don't go around saying they aren't great games because I don't like them...
