Story is the #1 thing that matters game play is second and everything else comes after that. I read books now because I used to love the stories in RPGS till this generation and now that they have let that fall flat I need to get my fix somewhere else. I miss when RPGS had stories written by real writers and not fan fics.

@Drakkhenden I should play RPG's because I don't focus on the story? What kind of an ignorant statement is that?

I would like to pose a question to all those who say the story is more important than the game: If this is really how you feel ( you enjoy a good story more than a good game), why do you even play vids? Are you expecting the stories in them to be more entertaining, thought provoking or mind opening than all the books and stories written? Have you ever even read a book of your own free will?

@nacrom why yes! yes i do have you ever played xenosaga? xenogears? xenoblade? huh? ANY HREAKING "TALES" GAME why can't someone use a medium that has the potential to tall a story that ABSOLUTLY CANNOT BE PRESENTED IN ANY OTHER WAY OR IT WOULD LOOSE MOST OF NOT ALL ITS POTENTIAL IMPACT!!!!!! i can't play a game and mind numbingly kill things if i wanted that i would play like angry birds on my moms smart phone for free instead of shelling out 60+ dollar on collectors edition with music CD tee-shirt art book director commentary figurine collection special preorder only skimpy costume for my female characters monster plushy special controller special game console extended director's cut (with 90 extra minutes of cut scenes =3) i go crazy over all of this BECAUSE the story is worth it BECAUSE it delivers something that only video games can do. if you really feel that way about video games please please stop play them your only wasting your time and DONT CALL YOUR SELF A GAMER!!!!!!!! i hate it when people who only play games like COD or skip through the story just to kill things call themselves "gamers" a gamer has appreciation for almost everything you do not. I'm not trying to say the you need to play JRPG's but stories have a place in gaming for a reason.

In all honesty, I've always put gameplay in front of story, sometimes not even putting in effort to get the whole thing... until just recently. With the exception of Dark Souls (which does have a cool, but minimalist, story), I like my RPGs to have a decent story. I got into the story in FFXIII and enjoyed most of it (I think you have to read all the datalogs and whatnot to get the whole thing), but I think my love for RPG stories really took hold when I played Mass Effect. I love the characters, the story, and universe. And while the gameplay is solid, the game experience would just feel incomplete without it.

I just got Tales of Abyss. And while I always valued the games the most for the battle system, the story and characters are awesome despite some cliches. I always use to ignore some of the skits in tales games and didn't care too much about the story and stuff, but now I try to keep up with everything, because it's actually really good stuff IMO.

XIII-2 seems like it has a pretty silly story, but I think I could find some things to enjoy about it. It may be weird and senseless at times, but a story in a game just cements the experience for me. It gives the player a feeling of purpose. An objective other than just getting to the next level. Stories aren't essential to RPG's, or even videogames altogether, but i feel without them... well it would be like comic book without words. It can work without em, might be better in some cases, but pictures with words work really well to create an entertaining experience.
