Poison was always a transgender character, and here's a documentary proving it

I am astonished that this is a thing that exists. It's also kinda great.

I don't care. Poison is hot.

but it was a girl originally but they had to change it for US since times were different and hitting a girl in a game was a big deal. So no 20 min documentary can change the fact that she is a girl. Only changed because ESRB or whatever of the early 90's.

@darkheartlessriku The documentary addresses this in the first 3 minutes.

Research > assumption.
Dig around the net a little before you claim an (overly) dedicated researcher is wrong.

Also, for the record.. ESRB didn't exist in the early 90s. It was created mostly due to Mortal Kombat. Which let you beat the shit out of Sonya. Which Street Fighter let you beat the shit out of Chun-Li. So obviously violence vs women isn't the reason. There was no ESRB at the time and there were plenty of other video games where violence against women existed without controversy.

@darkheartlessriku There was no "ESRB or whatever" of the early '90s. There was no video game rating system at all. You clearly weren't around at the time.

I read the headline and my first thought was of the '90s glam rock band. Funny thing is, it made sense.

Back when Final Fight first came out in US arcades, I remember thinking that it was a clever joke on Capcom's part. I thought "she" was supposed to be a play on the band Poison, seeing as how they were a hair metal/glam band and were pretty much mildly crossdressing in their own MTV generation way and that the gender issue was something to laugh at. This video was a pretty compelling argument for Poison actually being a TG. Well played.

This debate will always go on. Not because there's some compelling evidence on both sides (cuz, as the video points out, there isn't). It will always be debated because people aren't comfortable with a hyper-sexual player model being a transvestite.

Not trying to nitpick, but transvestites/cross-dressers (the PC term now is actually cross-dresser) are transgender. Transgender is an umbrella term that contains transsexuals, intersex, bigender, genderfluid, cross-dressers, drag queens/kings. The definition changes depending on who you talk to, but in general it's an umbrella term.
And like the video clarifies she is mtf (male to female) pre-op in Japan and post op in NA...which is really dumb but whatever.
BUT regardless I think it's awesome that there is a trans person in a major video game series and they don't try to make her into some kinda of bad stereotype. She's just a post-op MTF that is living as the way she wants to.
and on another note, idk if those quotes from Ryu and Chun-Li are translations or tweaked a little bit through localization, but I thought they were kind of rude. They both make it sound like she is a cross-dresser when in American she is supposed to be post-op MTF, which would mean she has no indication of her previous natal sex. Their comments just serve to confuse people further.
OH WELL! Either way kudos to them for repping the trans community.

This sort of has the same problem as the Red Letter Media reviews of the Star Wars prequels. It's too long for the point he's trying to make. You can beat Final Fight in less time than it takes to watch the video. At least this is a bit more interesting than watching some guy bitch about Star Wars for 2 hours in a really annoying voice.

I could not possibly care less about the gender of a fictional character for a game I probably won't even play, but the scope of this video is amazing and just awesome in every way. Well done.

This has never been shocking for me, I mean my main dude Zangief is officially gay (so is Eagle) so a transgender is fine.

Poison is obviously a transexual, and Eagle is officially gay, but I haven't seen anything in the actual StreetFighter canon that even hints that Zangief's gay. Yes, there's an ending in SF2 where Zangief has a picture of Vega by his mirror, but that's making fun of the "fighters keep a pic of their rivals by their mirror" thing. Yes, one description of Zangief said he doesn't like young women, but that doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't like women in general, AND he has a love interest in SF-Alpha (R. Mika). Also, he may look like a really gay guy to us North Americans, but to the Japanese I don't think it's supposed to be look that way. It's all misinterpretations on the part of the fanboys.
