Papo & Yo's Monster redesigned, less like a puppy
30
Monster, one of the principal characters in the upcoming Papo & Yo for PS3, has seen a significant redesign. The redesign was aided by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, who has worked in an artistic capacity on many Hollywood films, ranging from Virtuosity to Return of the Jedi. According to Papo & Yo creator Vander Caballero, the choice was made to redesign the character when Rodis-Jamero remarked that he looked "too much like a puppy."
Monster represents Caballero's father, and is meant to be able inspire both comfort and fear, as Caballero's real father did when he was young. In discussing the character with Rodis-Jamero, Caballero came to realize Monster didn't accurately represent his father. As you can see, the new Monster (top right) is less colorful, not quite as scaly, has less defined claws and a drastically altered head. In Caballero's words, "He's scary, but there is something that attracts you to him – something that makes you want to play with him, help him, even though he's a beast who could fly into a rage and kill you."
Naturally, some won't approve of the change. Responding to a negative comment on PlayStation Blog, Caballero explained that the original Monster combined elements of his father with playful elements of his own dog. "I had to be honest," wrote Caballero, "and admit that Rhino [the original Monster], as much as I liked him, was more my dog than my father."

Everything in the second photo looks lower-fidelity. Fewer polygons, worse textures, worse lighting. I wonder what happened...

@Foggen i'd imagine they'll make further progress on the character, or that they realized the original character detail was not feasible on consoles. maybe they decided to go from 60% char 40% environment processing power setup, to the inverse. many reasons, really.
but in defense of the design itself, i think it works much better as a overlord father type. the original one just looks like a sidekick, and doesn't look necessarily menacing. the new one pretty much screams that emotion

I don't know what this is, but I already have an opinion on it. I like the one on the left.

Gay, I liked the original rhino-puppy design....this new one looks like typical dungeon fodder...

No, http://i41.tinypic.com/166k5ya.png is gay.
This is just an unfortunate occurrence you aren't happy with.

Old guy looks like Rocksteady mixed with Ron Jeremy.
New guy looks like he came from a Ratchet & Clank game.

As soon as i clicked through i thought
"I dont know what this game is but they really improved the Monster! Wow it looks so much better!"
Then i read that the one on the left was the ORIGINAL, not the redesign.... :/

I just wanted to put a quote from the creator of PAPO and YO in the comments (which itself was another comment on the PS Blog.) Thought it might put a more positive spin on the whole situation.
"Hola I’m Vander, the creator of PAPO & YO, Thanks for your feedback on the monster, I really like the Rhino too. I remember going from the first sketches to a 3d model to putting him in the engine, but inside of me there was always something wrong with the character I couldn’t describe. Talking to my friend Nilo I realized what it was – I was mixing the monster with my dog! I love playing with my dog and got stuck in the loop of playfulness I wanted to have with my father which I never had. But when Nilo asked me if I see my father in the monster I had to be honest and admit that Rhino, as much as I liked him, was more my dog than my father.
The monster looks a bit scarier now and that is how I felt when I was a kid. When Nilo sent me some concept art for the new monster I saw my father in it and I feel that is a more honest view of my past.
We are still working on improving the texture and I look forward to showing you his animations soon, new monster is attaching too.
I know many will not like the new monster but I really could not ship with Rhino knowing he is the representation of my father mixed with my dog."

@ninjapresident
everyone should read this, good post. i was on the same boat as most people on here in regards to thinking the one on the left is more appealing visually, but once all the texture work is done for the model on the right i can see myself thinking that one is definitely more badass.

Guys, you're not *supposed* to like him, because he represents an abusive father.

Actually I think that the second one's a lot more on target for the emotions they're trying to evoke. Yes, the first one looks cooler, but everything the creator's said he's trying to evoke points to the second one in my mind.

Am i the only one who likes the redesign?
The game's aesthetic is very simply. I have not heard of this game until now and i can tell you that the original design looks out of place.
If the new design was what they had all along, nobody would be complaining.

The creature in the 2nd shot just looks unfinished, like a model roughed out before being taken into mudbox/zbrush for sculpting.
Poor choice.

Definitely like the look of the monster on the left more.
The monster on the right, aside from being poorer quality graphically, is terribly generic looking.
If he wanted more of his father in the monster on the left, he could have shown some abusive tendencies or unnecessary aggression.
To be serious, it needs another redesign. The monster on the right just doesn't look appealing, even if it looks less like his dog.

Is it me, or was this originally called Papa y Yo (you know, actual Spanish), or was it always "and"?
