PlayStation Vita owners will receive a PlayStation 4 companion app after installing the portable's next firmware update, Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida revealed
The "PS4 Link" app will head up Sony's planned expansion within the mobile marketplace, which Yoshida detailed
last week. A similar app will be released for iOS and Android devices at the PlayStation 4's launch.
Originally announced as "PlayStation App
," Sony's mobile utility will give users access to supplementary material during gameplay, similar to Microsoft's SmartGlass
initiative for the Xbox One. PlayStation App also allows users to purchase content online, browse status updates from friends, and watch streamed gameplay from a linked PlayStation 4 console.
