However, today Joystiq learned that Microsoft has decided against publishing the remake itself and has invited the indie dev to find another publisher willing to put the game on its platform.<br /> <br /> According to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Toki-HD/"><em>Toki HD</em></a> producer Anthony De Sa Ferreira, the Xbox Live Arcade approval process only allows titles published by Microsoft or an approved third-party company. Following its submission, Microsoft told Golgoth Studio that <em>Toki HD</em> "did not fit with the current needs of Microsoft Game Studio," and suggested the developer contact another publisher. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Golgoth-Studio/">Golgoth</a> tells Joystiq that it is in active conversations with multiple publishers and is confident the game will see life on the Xbox Live Arcade, saying an agreement may be only weeks away.<br /> <br /> Ferreira believes Microsoft's approval process may have become more stringent in light of the recent high-profile success of original games on the platform, such as <em>Shadow Complex</em>. "I think it's too bad, because it's the independent studios who helped the XBLA to [meet] the success it knows today," he said, adding that not many indie devs can achieve such an impressive result as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Chair/">Chair</a>-developed title.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/">Toki HD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/2544190/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/toki-2009-10-21-15-20-40-82_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/2544191/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/toki-2009-10-21-15-24-15-91_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/2544192/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/toki-2009-10-21-15-31-11-83_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/2544193/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/toki-2009-10-21-15-31-43-21_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/toki-hd/2544194/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/toki-2009-10-21-15-23-35-47_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/golgoth-forced-to-search-for-toki-hd-publisher-on-xbla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Golgoth forced to find Toki HD publisher for XBLA</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/golgoth-forced-to-search-for-toki-hd-publisher-on-xbla/">Golgoth forced to find Toki HD publisher for XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 20:00:00 EST. At tonight's 2009 Video Game Awards, the first footage of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/new-medal-of-honor-promises-most-authentic-modern-war-experienc/">recently revealed</a> <em>Medal of Honor</em> impressed with solid visuals and a metric ton of explosions.<br />
<br />
Not enough for you? The gameplay trailer concluded with one NPC kicking a booby trapped prisoner through a high rise window. Now we're not marketing pros, but that should be the first bullet point on the back of the game's box. Check out the trailer -- in all its YouTube quality glory -- <strike>after the break</strike>.<br />

Jackson (suck it, Yoda) has just taken the stage at the 2009 Video Game Awards to reveal <em>Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2</em>. In the announcement trailer -- Darth Vader's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars-the-force-unleashed/">once apprentice</a> -- codenamed "Starkiller" steps into a dark arena only to be faced with a creature hellbent on his destruction. Thankfully, Starkiller -- armed with two light sabers -- pounces to attack the gargantuan foe. Sadly, it was all CG, but we'll take any new <em>Force Unleashed</em> we can get.<br />

<em><br />
Batman: Arkham Asylum 2</em> -- which is what we'll call it until an official title is revealed -- presumably continues where the original critically acclaimed Rocksteady title left off, and was revealed via diabolical plot from Batman's Nemesis The Joker. Attempting to gas those in attendance, Mark Hamill's threatening vocals reverberated throughout the audience revealing a sequel people "didn't expect." After smashing through sales charts and the assumptions that all licensed titles are crap, we expected nothing less. Take that, Joker!<br />

<em>Mass Effect 2</em> producer Adrien Cho thinks developers are pampering players, making games much easier now than in previous generations. "It goes back to that learning mechanism of "Well, I tried this - it didn't work. I'm going to try something different." And I think that's going to be something in <em>Mass Effect 2</em>, we don't want it to be a cakewalk, you want a challenge," he told <a href="http://videogamesdaily.com/news/200912/mass-effect-2-producer-devs-pamper-gamers/">Video Games Daily</a>.<br />
<br />
Using the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/review-demons-souls/">brutally difficult</a> From Software title <em>Demon's Souls</em> as an example, Cho says hardcore players today want to earn progress in games. "I think gamers want a more sophisticated game, they don't want a breezy game where you see all the cinematics and just put in your hours and play it through." According to Cho, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Mass-Effect-2/"><em>Mass Effect 2</em></a> aims to give players a healthy dose of challenge and sophistication when it launches early next year. We're all for hard work and challenge, but our idea of sophistication doesn't include the ancient mechanic of trial and error.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/mass-effect-2-goes-for-challenge-and-sophistication-not-pamperi/">Mass Effect 2 goes for challenge and sophistication, not pampering</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 17:30:00 EST. EA CEO John Riccitiello claims there were multiple factors in the decision to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/pandemic-closes-physical-doors-brand-lives-on/">shutter Pandemic Studios</a>, but one of the most significant was the studio's California base of operations. In an interview with <a href="http://kotaku.com/5418956/one-of-pandemics-biggest-problems-was-being-in-california?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+kotaku%2Ffull+%28Kotaku%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">Kotaku</a>, Riccitiello blamed a combination of regulatory changes that affect technology and entertainment companies in California, as well as the tax incentives offered in other countries as major factors in the company's decision. "For good or for bad, we are taking down headcount in California because it is really expensive," Riccitiello said.<br />
<br />
Another factor in the decision is the rapid growth of digitally delivered titles and browser-based games, leading Riccitiello to believe that the industry is quickly moving away from a focus on "packaged" software. "In a world that used to be all PC, then used to be all console, now it's neither." Riccitiello's comments echo those of Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada, who recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/wada-emphasizes-online-delivery-advises-devs-to-shift-focus/">advised publishers</a> to prepare for the "exponential growth" of digital delivery and server-based games following the announcement the studio would restructure its Eidos London offices, resulting in layoffs.<br />
<br />
Pandemic Studios' closure comes at an interesting time, as the announcement was made just weeks before the studio's final title: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/The-Saboteur/"><em>The Saboteur</em></a>. However, Riccitiello <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/pandemic-closes-physical-doors-brand-lives-on/">reiterated</a> that the company's brand and franchises <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/24/mercs-inc-officially-announced-developed-by-ea-los-angeles/">will live on</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/ea-pandemics-california-location-significant-in-decision-to/">EA: Pandemic's California location 'significant' in decision to close studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 16:30:00 EST. The team behind the Penny Arcade Expo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/30/pax-east-coming-late-march-2010-venue-revealed/">journey to Boston</a> has announced an open call for panel and speaker submissions that will run until January 11, 2010. In order to qualify for an open panel or speaker slot, submissions need to both entertain and inform. "We're looking for the kind of presentations that invoke intense reactions and discussion in the community," said Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo.<br />
<br />
Have a crazy or interesting idea of something you'd like to see at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East/">PAX East</a>? Submit it. With plans to fill the event with up to 90 hours of content, there's plenty of room for submissions (provided they don't <em>stink</em>). PAX East is setting up shop in Boston, Massachusetts, from March 26 to 28, 2010. Make sure to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/early-bird-special-on-pax-east-tickets/">register</a> if you plan to join the party.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/pax-east-open-for-panel-speaker-submissions/">PAX East open for panel, speaker submissions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 00:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/erik-estavillo">Erik Estavillo</a> -- otherwise referred to as a "professional plantiff" by <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/11/30/microsoft%E2%80%99s-gates-subpoenaed-rrod-suit">GamePolitics</a> for his laundry list of legal claims -- has subpoenaed Microsoft's Bill Gates in his suit targeting the company for his run in with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RRoD">Red Ring of Death</a>. According to court documents filed in a U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the subpoena demands Gates hand over paperwork that reveal the "true and relative number of actual Xbox 360 units that have been fixed by Microsoft over the past 3 years." Estavillo also seeks data pertaining to the number of broken Xbox 360 consoles and the amount of people banned from Xbox Live for "piracy" between November 28, 2008 and 2009.<br />
<br />
While Estavillo is looking for answers to questions every journalist has been seeking, his track record of legal battles places him in eccentric territory. Estavillo is also suing Activision Blizzard claiming characters in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> walk at an intentionally slow pace in order to bilk customers of more monthly fees. In the claim, he subpoenaed actress Winona Ryder and Depeche Mode member Martin Gore. Estavillo has also filed suit against Sony for being banned from online play, stemming from comments he supposedly made during matches of <em>Resistance: Fall of Man</em>; and Nintendo, for issuing firmware updates that disabled his <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Homebrew-Channel/">Homebrew Channel</a></em>.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/pro-plantiff-erik-estavillo-subpoenas-bill-gates-in-rrod-suit/">'Pro plantiff' Erik Estavillo subpoenas Bill Gates in RROD suit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 23:00:00 EST. Nintendo's says it will investigate possible copyright infringement in Nokia's N900 smartphone after a Nokia blog post showcased the device playing retro games through the use of an emulator application. According to <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/nintendo-investigating-possible-copyright-infringement-by-nokia">Edge</a>, the video (which is no longer available) featured someone playing <em>Super Mario World</em> and <em>Super Mario Bros. 3</em>, and also showed off buttons that supposedly opened emulators for Nintendo's Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, NES and SNES.<br /> <br /> Nintendo UK PR manager Robert Saunders told Edge the company was unaware of the smartphone's emulation feature and stated that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nintendo/">Nintendo</a> would take "rigorous steps" to protect its intellectual property. "Our legal team will examine this to determine if any infringement has taken place," Saunders added. Even if the feature ends up on the cutting room floor, we imagine some crafty hackers are already taking steps to get emulation software working on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nokia/">Nokia</a> device. Just like they do with <em>everything </em>else.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/29/nintendo-investigating-possible-copyright-infringement-in-new-no/">Nintendo investigating possible copyright infringement in new Nokia smartphone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 29 Nov 2009 23:30:00 EST. If you find yourself coming up short in your quest for victory in the PS3-exclusive multiplayer beta for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bad-Company-2/"><em>Bad Company 2</em></a>, the development team at DICE has <a href="http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2009/11/17/a-selection-of-defensive-tactics-tips-for-arica-harbor-beta.aspx##">a few pointers</a> to help reduce the gap between your win and loss statistics. <em>Bad Company 2</em> level designer Inge J&oslash;ran "Pirelli" Holberg posted a laundry list of tips for attackers and defenders for the beta's Arica Harbor map.<br />
<br />
With the map's design in mind, Holberg's tips feature a slew of ideas on how you can destroy specific areas of the map to redirect adversary foot traffic -- right into the sights of your favorite firearm. Our tips? Keep shooting people on the other team and you're bound to win eventually. Following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/square-enix-makes-cuts-to-beautiful-studio/">yet another report</a> of company restructuring resulting in job losses, outspoken industry veteran <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Denis-Dyack/">Denis Dyack</a> called industry-wide layoffs within the last year and a half "staggering." However, the Silicon Knights boss does see a brighter future for development over the next five years, at least in the Canadian province of Ontario.<br />
<br />
"Before, Ontario was a little isolated, there wasn't a lot of videogame companies here. But that's going to change. With all the positive steps that the government's done," Dyack told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/dyack-developer-layoffs-and-closures-have-been-staggering">GamesIndustry.biz</a>. Dyack's hopeful outlook for Ontario comes, in part, from Ubisoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/ubisoft-opening-studio-in-toronto-continuing-to-take-over-canad/">July announcement</a> to open a new studio in Toronto -- a move Ubisoft hopes will bring 800 new jobs to the region over the next decade.<br />
<br />
According to Dyack, new business in Ontario means the province will be able to combat recruiters who remove developer and designer graduates from the area. "It's really depressing going to [University of] Waterloo to recruit and we see that Microsoft was there before us and took all the best people. The tax payer paid for that education," he lamented. With development expanding in Ontario, Silicon Knights can finally start combing schools for talent to help produce the (Sweet Lord, make it happen) sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Eternal-Darkness/"><em>Eternal Darkness</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/28/dyack-dismayed-by-layoffs-anticipates-growth-in-ontario/">Dyack dismayed by layoffs, anticipates growth in Ontario</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 17:30:00 EST. <br />According to a statement made to <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/11/27/warmachine-pc-game-in-the-works/">BigDownload</a>, the video game adaptation of Privateer Press' tabletop fantasy war game <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Warmachine/">Warmachine</a></em> is currently in development for the PC and (unspecified) consoles. Quietly announced in August, the <em>Warmachine</em> video game is being developed by the indie team at WhiteMoon Dreams and will feature player control of "various warcasters and their warjack battle groups" across interactive battlefields in both single and multiplayer modes.<br /><br />WhiteMoon Dreams' Norvell Thomas promises we'll get a chance to see <em>whatever</em> that last sentence even means in a "gorgeous" demo by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2010/">GDC 2010</a>. Thomas adds that the indie dev's goal is to "wow" publishers at the conference in order to fund full development of the table-top adaptation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/28/warmachine-game-attacking-pc-consoles/">Warmachine game attacking PC, consoles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 16:30:00 EST. North Carolina State University recently received a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to help develop crime scene mapping tech (right) derived from the<em> </em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_%28game_engine%29"><em>Unity</em> game engine</a>, allowing teams to create a virtual reproduction of crime scenes.<br /><br />Using environments made up of 3-D laser scans and 2D models, investigators would be able to share detailed information with other scientists through the platform's website, reducing wait times and travel budgets.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE5AQ0TR20091127">IC-CRIME platform</a> (Interdisciplinary, cyber-enabled crime reconstruction through innovative methodology and engagement) won't be ready for at least three years, but scientists seem confident in the platform's future potential growth in catching scumbags. Also, turning the lights on in the lab might help the process. Those rooms always look so dark on TV.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/28/real-world-csis-look-at-videogame-tech-to-help-solve-cases/">Real world CSIs look at videogame tech to help solve cases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 14:30:00 EST. According to Microsoft, nearly two million Xbox Live users logged into Facebook through the console's new built-in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dashboard-update">social media</a> applications. Based on <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2009/11/24/bu124.aspx?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MSGamesPressAlerts+%28Microsoft+Games+Press+Alerts%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">a vague estimate</a> provided by Microsoft, it appears that around ten percent of all Xbox Live Gold accounts used the application within its first week of availability; however, it's possible many of those users only logged in to see the new feature in action.<br /><br />Microsoft also stated the addition of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lastfm/">Last.fm</a> -- a music streaming service currently only available for US and UK gamers -- prompted nearly one million new profile activations. In its first week, Last.fm users streamed "more than 120 million minutes" of music to their Xbox 360 consoles. If we've learned one thing from these numbers, it's that people love to click on shiny new boxes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/28/microsoft-reveals-usage-stats-for-facebook-last-fm/">Microsoft reveals usage stats for Facebook, Last.fm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST. Bioware has revealed the planet of Alderaan will be one of the environments for players to explore in the upcoming MMO, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>. Before it was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXCfEhW0R3k">reduced to an asteroid field</a> by the Death Star, Alderaan was a planet known for its natural beauty and peace. Thankfully, a bloody civil war begins, giving gamers <em>plenty</em> of stuff to viciously <em>click</em> on. <br /><br />Honestly, while we're excited to see the planet again, we also can't help but be a little sad. Like watching the movie <em>Titanic</em> or Lindsay Lohan's career, it just doesn't feel right when you know the whole thing will end in tragedy. For those of you looking to practice epic MMO-clicking, Bioware's <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20091127_001">official site</a> houses more media and information on the doomed planet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/28/return-to-alderaan-in-star-wars-the-old-republic/">Return to Alderaan in Star Wars: The Old Republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST. If you've got room in your heart for one more thing to be grateful for, may we recommend these adorable <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Resident-Evil/">Resident Evil</a></em> inspired grenade plushies (via <a href="http://www.spritestitch.com/?p=2443">Sprite Stitch</a>)? Yeah, these <em>exist</em> and it just warms the cockles of our heart. We can't help but dream about how great these crafty items would look hanging on our belt next Halloween (or during our inspired <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cosplay/">cosplay</a> sessions). If only we knew how to sew!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/27/grenade-out-resident-evil-plushies-blast-our-hearts-apart/">Grenade out! Capcom has updated its official Japanese <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/bio5/ae/lost_creature.html"><em>Resident Evil 5</em> site</a>, revealing the new enemy featured in the upcoming <em>Gold Edition</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-hits-retail-in-march-dlc-in-febru/">retail and (assorted) DLC release</a> of the game. The new nemesis is an unnamed and extremely grotesque behemoth who carries a large <em>key-like</em> anchor, <span>stalking the underground of Spencer's Mansion in the content's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-gold-edition/">Lost in Nightmares</a></em> episode. According to an English translation of the character card, players can hunt down the beast to obtain heavy weapons such as a sickle. If the design proves one thing, it's that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> continues to create characters with terrible skin afflictions. Square Enix president <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Yoichi-Wada/">Yoichi Wada</a> estimates digital distribution and server-based gaming is poised for "exponential growth" within the next decade, advising developers to prepare for the shift. "In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network. A time will come when the hardware isn't even needed anymore," he said in an interview with <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/36665/Square-Enix-Consoles-set-for-extinction">MCV</a>.<br /><br />According to Wada, consoles as we know them will change dramatically, as "any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform on which games can be played." Wada believes platform holders have been preparing for the shift to network-based games and delivery systems since 2005, forcing his company to respond by increasing production of social and browser games. Square Enix is also preparing a beta release for the MMORPG <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> in 2010.<br /><br />While the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square Enix</a> boss believes this shift has a greater global impact, especially in regions which do not have large console markets, our major fear is having to download an entire single-player <em>Final Fantasy</em>. Seriously, that's <em>a lot</em> of gigs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/wada-emphasizes-online-delivery-advises-devs-to-shift-focus/">Wada emphasizes online delivery, advises devs to shift focus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Nov 2009 20:00:00 EST. In a statement made yesterday, Square Enix revealed plans to restructure Beautiful Game Studios, the team responsible for the <em>Championship Manager</em> franchise -- a plan resulting in "unavoidable job losses." Square Enix's aim is to "re-focus" its vision in order to "build a successful commercial future" for the European football management series. Square Enix notes job cuts will occur before Christmas.<br /> <br /> According to <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33368/Cuts-hit-Champ-Man-studio">Develop</a>, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada hinted that shuffling would occur at Eidos' London offices during a keynote at the Montreal International Games Summit <a href="http://blogcritics.org/gaming/article/migs-09-yoichi-wada-president-and/">last week</a>. It is unclear if Beautiful Game Studios -- which is located at the London office -- is a small piece of a larger restructure plan. Layoffs just before Christmas? Bah, humbug!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/square-enix-makes-cuts-to-beautiful-studio/">Square Enix makes cuts to Beautiful studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Nov 2009 17:00:00 EST. Starting now until November 30, <a href="http://www.Direct2Drive.com/">Direct2Drive</a> is offering $10 off either the standard edition or Digital Deluxe Edition of BioWare's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dragon-Age-Origins/">Dragon Age: Origins</a></em>. The exclusive sale kicks off an upcoming Thanksgiving price drop on unnamed titles from the digital download service.<br /> <br /> The standard edition is priced at $39.95, while the Deluxe edition is priced at $54.95 for the promotion. With the savings we recommend you look into purchasing the (somewhat controversial) downloadable content already available for the title. If paying for storage space is your <em>thing</em>, that is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/24/direct2drive-offers-10-off-dragon-age-origins-until-nov-30/">Direct2Drive offering $10 off Dragon Age: Origins through Nov. 30</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 02:00:00 EST. Rockers of the classic '80s band Tesla claim to be included in the yet-to-be announced (but you <em>totally</em> saw it coming) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Guitar-Hero-6/"><em>Guitar Hero 6</em></a>. In an interview with <a href="http://www.bravewords.com/news/125663">Brave Words &amp; Blood Knuckles</a>, guitarist Dave Rude revealed "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SzTVnSMlF0">Modern Day Cowboy</a>" -- from the band's 1986 debut album <em>Mechanical Resonance</em> -- will be included in the music title. Rude noted the song was one of three suggestions the band made to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Activision/">Activision</a> when they were pursued to be included.<br />
<br />
While some (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/nickelback-singer-put-down-the-guitar-hero/">completely talentless</a>) acts have decried the popularity of music games such as <em>Guitar Hero</em>, Rude feels the genre is an important step for up-and-coming rockers. "I think it's a good thing," Rude said. "Even if people don't learn to play guitar, it's exposing them to all sorts of cool guitar-based music that they wouldn't have ever heard otherwise." You hear that Kroeger? Stop crying ... and writing the same song <em>over</em> and <em>over</em> and <em>over</em> again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/tesla-guitarist-reveals-modern-day-cowboy-headed-for-guitar-he/">Tesla guitarist reveals 'Modern Day Cowboy' headed for Guitar Hero 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 23:59:00 EST. While reports circulated last week that Project Natal would launch sometime in November 2010, Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson says the details were only rumors. Speaking with <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/microsoft-dismisses-natal-rumours">Eurogamer</a> at a launch event in London for the console's new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dashboard-update-fall-2009">social media applications</a>, Thompson said the rumors "weren't accurate" and claimed Microsoft has yet to determine "a lot of things" related to the launch of its new motion-sensing technology.<br />
<br />
According to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/11/rumor-project-natal-launch-details-leaked/">rumors</a>, Microsoft was set to ship around five million <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Natal/">Project Natal</a> units next fall, alongside 14 supporting titles at a price point that <em>could</em> go as low as $50 (&pound;30). When asked about the rumored details and price, Xbox's head of Europe, Chris Lewis, jokingly added, "Now you know better than to listen to that stuff! We will announce in good time."<br />
<br />
However, Lewis did remind Eurogamer that Microsoft is striving for "unique" and "compelling" experiences with the technology. "That has to happen and will happen," he said. As long as whatever "happens" doesn't follow Microsoft's traditional Xbox 360 peripheral <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/microsoft-dropping-hdmi-cable-gives-xbox-360-consumers-flexibi/">pricing scheme</a>, we'll be happy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/microsoft-natal-launch-details-not-accurate/">Microsoft: Natal launch details 'not accurate'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 19:15:00 EST. Robomodo CEO David Michicich hinted that more software for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Tony-Hawk-RIDE/"><em>Tony Hawk: RIDE</em></a> skateboard controller could be on its way. When asked if the developer had other ideas for the peripheral's use outside of the skating genre in an interview with <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33283/Tony-Hawk-Ride-team-hint-at-boarding-other-genres?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+developmag%2Fifbh+%28Develop%29">Develop</a>, Michicich replied, "We're doing a game with Activision and we're not allowed to talk about it right now."<br />
<br />
In June 2009, Robomodo president Joshua Tsui <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/tony-hawk-ride-board-to-be-used-for-many-games/">commented</a> that the (probably going to be involved in its fair share of accidental injury lawsuits) peripheral could be used for a variety of software. "The obvious ones are snowboarding and surfing and such," he told <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/many_games_planned_for_tony_hawk_board_peripheral.html">Videogamer</a>.<br />
<br />
With a new entry into the <em>Tony Hawk: RIDE</em> franchise <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/14/tony-hawk-ride-sequel-already-planned/">probably</a> already in the planning stages, it appears the hardware will see new software to help lighten consumer guilt. Sure, our dream is for some kind of Lumberjack Simulator to be in development, but the controller will more than likely focus on something closer to snowboarding. If <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/ea-done-with-boogie-franchise-for-now-ssx-revived-if-market-is/">EA hasn't jumped</a> on that train yet, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/ea-chicago-exes-take-up-with-activision-form-robomodo/">former EA employees</a> are more than welcome to try.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/robomodo-hints-at-new-software-for-ride-per/">Robomodo CEO hints at new software for RIDE peripheral</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 18:45:00 EST. During the BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ubisoft/">Ubisoft</a> CEO Yves Guillemot told attendees his company aims to capture a 10 percent market share in the flooded games industry. According to Guillemot (via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ubisoft-we-want-10-percent-market-share">GamesIndustry.biz</a>), Ubisoft currently stands at "around 6 percent," but the executive believes his company can expand its reach using a multi-tiered strategy to raise its share very "quickly."<br /> <br /> At its core, Ubisoft's plan was detailed as a three-pronged approach: A focus on present and future consoles, online and social networks and entertainment convergence. In June 2009, Ubisoft revealed the cross-game interface social media and digital platform, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Uplay/">Uplay</a> -- a web-based service it hopes will allow developers to better connect with players. Apart from this "confluence" concept, Ubisoft has continued its convergence strategy by expanding its marketing reach to gamers through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/first-assassins-creed-lineage-episode-is-surprisingly-great/">various forms of media</a> and through the use of its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/james-cameron-drops-avatar-game-details-everything-ever-about-t/">movie license agreements</a>.<br /> <br /> "We have many opportunities to gain market share," Gillemot said during the event, echoing statements made during its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/ubisoft-talks-dancing-fitness-and-party-games-on-natal-ps3-mot/">Q2 earnings call</a> last week regarding the importance of leveraging upcoming technology from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-motion-controller/">Sony</a>. Epic Games announced that the free version of its Unreal Engine 3 development kit (UDK) has surpassed 50,000 downloads since it was released to the public <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/unreal-development-kit-brings-unreal-engine-development-to-the-m/">last week</a>. The UDK -- which affords developers the opportunity to create non-commercial games, or titles for sale with a royalty sharing option with the company -- has been downloaded in over 130 countries and 4,500 cities across the world, according to information Epic provided to news site <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33252/UDK-surpasses-50k-users">Develop</a>.<br /> <br /> Epic vice president Mark Rein was "thrilled" the studio was able to provide the tools to schools and students, allowing them to use the same tool used by "many of the top game developers and publishers around the world." We're excited to see what the community can do with the tools, considering the issues <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/silicon-knights-sues-epic-over-unreal-engine-3-inadequacies/"><em>certain</em> teams</a> have had with the engine in the past. Currently the tools only allow budding developers to create software for the PC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/12/free-unreal-dev-kit-already-has-over-50k-users/">Free Unreal Dev Kit already has over 50K users</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. Encore Software and developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Runic-Games/">Runic Games</a> have announced plans to enchant its relationship by entering an exclusive publishing agreement that will send the addictive download-only PC title <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Torchlight/">Torchlight</a></em> to retail stores on January 5, 2010 for a MSRP of $19.99. Combining skills like so many elemental gems, Runic's design posse includes members from the original team that developed titles like <em>Diablo</em> and <em>Diablo II</em> (anyone ever heard of those?).<br /><br /><em>Torchlight</em> -- which recently released <a href="http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&amp;t=5940">free editing tools</a> to its users -- is currently available for PC via its <a href="http://www.torchlightgame.com">website</a>. A Mac version is planned for <em>sometime</em> in 2010. Sometime, meaning "not soon enough."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/12/torchlight-begins-retail-excursion-on-jan-5-2010/">Torchlight begins retail excursion on Jan. 5, 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST. Sega just announced that 40,000 lucky Xbox 360 owners will get <em>extremely</em> early access to a demo for the upcoming action game <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bayonetta/">Bayonetta</a></em>. To be considered for the prize, gamers must register for a free Sega Pass -- essentially the publisher's newsletter -- and enter for a chance to be selected on the <a href="http://www.sega.com/bayonettademo/">official <em>Bayonetta</em> demo site</a>.<br /><br />Registration for the "contest" will be open from Monday, November 9 to Friday, November 13. Winners will be notified on Monday, November 16. Those not selected will then be referred to as "the group least likely to win a 'boot-gun <em>thing</em>' firing contest" ... or PlayStation 3 players. Should you not get selected, you might want to take advantage of making a <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/bayonetta-demo-now-on-japanese-psn-and-xbox-marketplace/">Japanese account</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/so-you-want-to-play-the-bayonetta-demo-early-do-you/">So you want to play the Bayonetta demo early, do you?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 23:00:00 EST. Nintendo's most iconic foray into the handheld gaming market is finally being recognized as "an innovator" that "changed the way people play electronic games" by <a href="http://rocnow.com/article/living/200991105007">being inducted</a> into Strong National Museum of Play's Toy Hall of Fame. Among twelve finalists, the Game Boy joins the Big Wheel and the ball to be added to the list of important cultural toys.<br />
<br />
Yes, the ball is just <em>now</em> being inducted into the hall of fame, meaning Nintendo's handheld made the cut in two decades, while the ball had been clawing for a spot since the days of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball">Ancient Egypt</a>. In your face, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramesses_II">Ozymandias</a>.<br />

MLG forum user (and MS Paint fanatic) <a href="http://www.mlgpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=280142">ToM MoReLLo</a> claims to have played <em>Halo: Reach</em>, and was somehow able to nab multiple blurry screenshots of the game as evidence. Now, when we say blurry we mean <em>blurry</em>. In fact, the classic images of Bigfoot were of higher quality than some of these screens. Perhaps our natural skepticism is taking over, but we're taking these images with a rather large grain of salt.<br /> <br /> As for details, the forum post claims <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-Reach/">Reach</a></em> will feature squad-based combat and perks, similar to that of <em>Modern Warfare</em>. Squad-based mechanics certainly make sense, considering former <em>Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter</em> creative director Christian Allen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/ghost-recon-creative-director-moves-to-bungie/">joined Bungie in 2007</a>. But again, grain of salt.<br /> <br /> <em>Halo: Reach</em> -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/bungie-says-halo-reach-is-its-last-halo-game-working-on-new-ip/">Bungie's final title</a> in the <em>Halo</em> universe -- is expected to ship in 2010. Microsoft has yet to reply to our request for a comment on the images.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61150">Shacknews</a> &amp; <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378966">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/rumor-first-screens-details-for-halo-reach-leaked/">Rumor: First screens, details for Halo Reach leaked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 18:48:00 EST. At the crux of the argument is the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/dragon-age-launch-dlc-detailed/">launch DLC</a>, <em>Warden's Keep</em>, which gives players a "storage chest" to help expand the in-game inventory, among other additions. <a href="http://fidgit.com/archives/2009/11/dragon_age_the_hidden_seven_do.php">Fidgit</a> claims the DLC was pre-planned to "bilk users for more money."<br /> <br /> According to Zoeller, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dragon-Age-Origins">Dragon Age</a></em> originally featured a small storage chest in the game's party camp, but quickly became an issue due to story elements in the game that would change the camp's environment; so the storage area was removed. "We decided that it was not really necessary anyway since the item limitation was rather generous compared to the initial designs at least," Zoeller wrote. Later -- during a brainstorm session -- the team decided to include the chest in premium DLC, which was then made available at launch.<br /> <br /> Zoeller claims "storage limitations" were never pinpointed as problems by the game's quality assurance team, because "after all, it was part of the design." While the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bioware/">Bioware</a> designer doesn't have an issue with anger toward the decision, he vehemently denies <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> was involved for the sole purpose of getting more money out of players. With the DLC already available across all platforms (560<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> / $7, or free to deluxe edition players), it's up to players to make their opinions heard by voting with their wallets.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/dont-blame-ea-for-dragon-ages-inventory-or-paid-dlc/">Don't blame EA for Dragon Age's inventory (or paid DLC)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 21:00:00 EST. Are your Avatars ill-equipped to raid a terrorist safe house? Well, good news: Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling (aka <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fourzerotwo/">fourzerotwo</a>) revealed <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Modern-Warfare-2/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em> gear will soon be available for players to purchase on Xbox Live's Avatar Marketplace.<br /><br />Revealed in a recent <a href="http://twitter.com/fourzerotwo/status/5428290096">Tweet</a>, Bowling stated that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/InfinityWard/">Infinity Ward</a> will upload the content to Xbox Live tomorrow -- which includes the Ghost outfit pictured above. In an email to Joystiq, Bowling confirmed the content will be made available for purchase tomorrow. Until then, we'll sleep soundly knowing that the Avatar world will soon be safe from terrorist scum.<br /><br />[Thanks, B. The multi-platinum rock band No Doubt has filed a lawsuit against Activision in a L.A. County Superior Court claiming its likeness was "transformed" into a "virtual karaoke circus act" in over sixty songs in the recently released music title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Band-Hero/">Band Hero</a></em>. According to <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2009/11/04/no-doubt-lawsuit-activision-band-hero-guitar-video-game-gwen-stefani-is-not-a-man/">TMZ</a>, No Doubt claims gamers were only supposed to be able to use their likeness with three of its own tracks; however, the band is available as playable characters through the game's entire music catalog.<br />
<br />
Of particular note is lead singer Gwen Stefani's displeasure that her likeness can be used to sing "Honky Tonk Woman" by the Rolling Stones -- a song which references sex with prostitutes -- using a male voice and mannerisms. For its "circus act" inclusion, No Doubt is seeking an injunction to halt the "unauthorized use" of the band's name and likeness, as well as an unknown amount of damages (aka <em>mad</em> monies). Seems like Activision can't keep rock stars happy, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/courtney-love-to-sue-activision-over-guitar-hero-5s-reanimated/">dead</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/bon-jovi-turned-down-inclusion-in-guitar-hero-5-supports-love/">alive</a>.<br />

During a London event to showcase <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Epic-Mickey/">Disney Epic Mickey</a>, developer Warren Spector revealed that his initial pitches to Disney were for two very different titles; hinting one -- in many ways -- may have been a spiritual successor to <span style="font-style: italic;">Deus Ex</span>. The other title, according to <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/11/behind-the-scenes-at-epic-mickey-part-one.html">The Cut Scene</a> blog, was a "big fantasy" story the developer and his wife unsuccessfully pitched to DC Comics.<br /> <br /> Prior to the announcement of a new game in the series, Spector said he had previously attempted to acquire the <span style="font-style: italic;">Deus Ex</span> license from publisher Eidos, but was unsuccessful. Since then, Spector's Junction Point Studios has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/disney-acquires-warren-spectors-junction-point-studios/">acquired</a> by Disney Interactive, revealed his latest title and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/warren-spector-envisions-two-more-disney-epic-mickey-games/">hinted at more</a> from the <span style="font-style: italic;">Epic</span> universe.<br /> <br /> While Spector says there are still stories in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Deus Ex</span> universe he would like to tell, the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/pc-zone-deus-ex-3-confirmed-as-prequel-blessed-by-original-cre/">prequel</a>, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Deus-Ex-3/">Deus Ex 3</a> -- helmed by developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/eidos-montreal-studio-developing-new-deus-ex/">Eidos Montreal</a> -- will be the first title in the franchise without the original creator's watchful eye. "That story is not done for me," Spector said. "<span style="font-style: italic;">Deus Ex</span> was very much a game of the millennium." Sadly -- with another team on the project -- it appears Spector's dream of continuing the <span style="font-style: italic;">Deus Ex</span> conspiracy personally have indeed come to an end, for the time being.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/212837/spector-reveals-spiritual-successor-to-deus-ex/">GamePro</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/spector-talks-initial-disney-pitches-hints-at-spiritual-success/">Spector talks initial Disney pitches, hints at spiritual successor to Deus Ex</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 22:00:00 EST. Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25917">Gamasutra</a> that, while the gaming industry is currently "stable," sales figures of Activision's critically-lauded <em>DJ Hero</em> look to be only "modest" in the US -- an understatement <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/02/soccer-reigns-supreme-once-again-in-uk-sales-chart-dj-hero-brea/">in the UK</a>. Continuing the pricing trend of peripheral-based titles, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DJ-Hero/">DJ Hero</a></em> retails for $120 for its standard edition and $200 for its premium, "Renegade" edition. According to Sebastian, consumers are "showing price sensitivity" toward games with price points greater than $100.<br /><br />In recent history, the trend of peripheral-based releases has fallen short of sales expectations. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/michael-pachter-facts/">Internet-famous</a> Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter -- along with others in the field of "professional guessing" -- recently halved holiday sales predictions for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Guitar-Hero-5/">Guitar Hero 5</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/The-Beatles-Rock-Band/">The Beatles: Rock Band</a></em>; after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/beatles-rock-band-bests-guitar-hero-5-in-u-s-sept-sales/">both fell short</a> of initial sales predictions.<br /><br />According to Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz, the falling projections of peripheral games reflect both the casual consumer's decision to reduce spending on games, as well as the possibility that gamers are losing interest in the played-out rhythm genre.<br /><br />When contacted by Joystiq, Activision refused to comment on the matter. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/band-hero/">no less</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/scratch-the-ultimate-dj/">than</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lego-rock-band/">three</a> new rhythm titles on the horizon, we presume publishers hope the trend of sluggish peripheral-based game sales comes to a screeching halt; like the days of disco music and, apparently, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/01/infinity-ward-pulls-fight-against-grenade-spam-ad-in-light-of/">outlining the objectives of major marketing campaigns</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/dj-hero-sales-modest-analyst-says-activision-refuses-to-comm/">DJ Hero sales 'modest,' analyst says; Activision refuses to comment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 17:00:00 EST. If rumors circulating around <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378612">NeoGAF</a> prove true, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Modern-Warfare-2/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em> developer Infinity Ward won't be allowing the use of the Xbox 360's party chat feature during ranked multiplayer playlists in its upcoming title. Since a distinction in the post is made between different styles of online matches (ranked and social), we presume the function will not be utilized throughout all of <em>Modern Warfare 2</em>'s online playlists.<br /><br />Speaking with Joystiq, Infinity Ward community manager <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Robert-Bowling/">Robert Bowling</a> said the company "can't comment on leaks," and was unable to confirm if the feature will, in fact, be disabled. "Players should reserve judgment until they get a chance to experience it for themselves on November 10 instead of viewing it out of context," Bowling added. Have an opinion on the matter? Sound off in the comments.<br /><br />

It looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Samsung/">Samsung</a> is willing to pay as much as $250,000 to development teams or individuals for any mobile game pitches that eventually make it to the recently launched Samsung Application Store. According to <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33127/Samsung-offering-cash-for-game-ideas">Develop Online</a>, Samsung has enlisted the help of mobile developer Handmark to help oversee the upcoming megaton of pitches, prototypes and products, as well as assist developers with production of their ideas for the platform.<br /><br />Having lost <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/pachter-mobile-games-are-a-fad-eas-emphasis-on-sector-mispla/">a sizable chunk</a> of the mobile consumer base to Apple, and more specifically the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/iTunesAppStore/">iTunes App Store</a>, Samsung is now reaching into its pockets to ensure the company's slip in market share doesn't turn into a <em>complete</em> mudslide. "This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone, including big brands, mobile developers or any individual with a unique, creative idea to make it a reality," Handmark's senior VP of Global Sales, Chris Barnett said. In a new feature, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25818">Gamasutra</a> looks at Xbox 360 Gamerscore and game completion statistics in search of a reason why some players stop playing games in their library.<br /><br />According to the feature, a game's overall difficulty is the biggest culprit from discouraging players from completing a game. Using data of 14,000 players regularly surveyed provided by Microsoft and the top 13 <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-live-top-ten/">Xbox Live</a> titles in 2008, it was concluded the group unlocked less than half of the possible Gamerscore on average. Gamasutra notes that the selected users in the survey tend to be more hardcore than the average player, so overall completion rates are expected to be even lower.<br /><br />Another point of the study was to determine the average completion of a game's campaign mode. Using data of games that award campaign completion <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Achievements/">Achievements</a>, it was determined that only 30 percent of the surveyed group did not play games until the end. Gamasutra theorizes that the reason so many gamers neglect a game's campaign is due to frustration. Having experienced the -- sadly, <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/a-great-example-of-the-sterling-behavior-on-xbox-live/">often</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/28/annual-reminder-xbox-live-trash-talk-is-vile/">horrific</a> -- world of Xbox Live, we'd also guess many of the hardcore gamers examined skipped the campaign in favor of pwnin' n00bs online.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/gamasutra-examines-gamerscore-and-game-completion-statistics/">Gamasutra examines Gamerscore and game completion statistics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 14:30:00 EST.
