And all went to be rocked, every one into his own iTunes account. And Chris Grant also went up unto the city to be taxed with Ludwig Kietzmann, his espoused co-host, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there he should be delivered. And he brought forth their firstborn podcast, and wrapped it in swaddling jokes, and laid it in a Zune; because there was no room for them in the iPod. And there were in the same country gamers abiding in the field, keeping watch over their ... games by night. And, lo, the angel who was named Justin McElroy came upon them, and the glory of video games shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day a savior, which is the Joystiq Podcast."</itunes:summary><itunes:category text="Games & Hobbies"><itunes:category text="Video Games" /></itunes:category>

Sega re-registers trademarks for Rez, 18 Wheeler

Depending on what half of the information we're about to report appeals to you, be prepared to launch your trance vibrators or cans of Skoal high into the air in a fit of glee. Sega recently saved two franchises from the trademark trash compactor, effectively renewing its claim on future installments in the Rez and 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker series -- two staples in anyone's daily Dreamcast diet.

Try and contain some of your ecstasy/caffeine pill-fueled exuberance -- remember, re-registering a trademark isn't the same as announcing an actual game, so don't start designing your countdown page quite yet. Still, it does mean that Sega thinks these two stones have some blood left in them. Delicious, trance-inducing/cargo-hauling blood.

Source - Rez trademark
Source - 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker trademark

[Via Sega Nerds]
Sega re-registers trademarks for Rez, 18 Wheeler originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 05:00:00 EST. Wait, a new arcade game! Water you thinking? Raw Thrills continues to scrape barnacles off the drowning arcade scene; Arcade Heroes reports that the coin-op company is currently working on H2Overdrive, a spiritual successor to Hydro Thunder. Expected to make a splash next week during London's ATEI expo, the game is reportedly being developed by the same team responsible for Midway's speed boat racer, which was first released in arcades in 1999 before boosting to the Dreamcast, PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and PC.

Details remain light, though given fancy screens like the one above we wonder if this could be the game that finally sends us power sliding back to the local arcade. Yea, probably not.

Update: Looks like this isn't so a rumor as it is a sure thing. 1UP has posted up a preview of H2Overdrive, complete with a video you can watch of the upcoming racer in action without losing any quarters.

[Via VideoGamer]
Are you ready for a spiritual successor to ... Burnout Paradise's first-ever premium content pack is coming February 6, and even if you aren't willing to dole out the dead presidents, Criterion's giving you another reason to mark that date. Coming alongside the Party Pack DLC is a rather hefty title update ... and it's free!

Highlights include an in-game store, in-game access to the Criterion Games Network website (details to come; PC and PS3-only), enhanced visuals, a restart event option (yay!), easier barrel rolls and some vehicle and game mode tweaking. Hit up the developer's site for full details, and check out PS3 Fanboy for a full list of the new Trophies.

Thank you for joining us today. We've been informed by CVG that OutRun Online Arcade will not be released on PSN in North America. Please, remain calm and don't flip out like the blond in the passenger seat. Sega Europe informed the site that Europe will receive the title on XBLA and PSN; however, North America will only receive the XBLA version. No explanation was given.

Obviously, we've contacted Sega of America to confirm the information and ask what changed since it announced the title last month.
OutRun Online Arcade an XBLA exclusive in North America originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 17:08:00 EST. Midway's gasoline-guzzling Vin Diesel vehicle, Wheelman, has been delayed, thus becoming the victim of insufferable motor-related phrases like "it stalled," "it swerved" and the somewhat esoteric "it pulled a Mika Hakkinen." Regardless, the information being conveyed here is that Midway has pushed Wheelman's release back to March 20th, but has also promised to release a demo on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime before then. Players who missed the offramp to Paradise City can take the next exit early next month. Electronic Arts announced that the "Ultimate Box" edition of Burnout Paradise will ship in North America on February 5 as a PC exclusive, while players in Europe will be able to pick up the compilation on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 6. As previously revealed, the box will bundle together all of the game's previously released DLC, from patches to two-wheeled mayhem, in one easy-to-crash package.

Also included will be a pass-the-pad multiplayer mode, promising dozens of "quick-fire, turn-based challenges" for up to eight players. This mode will also be released to console drivers as a premium (read: not free) "Party" pack, adding new Achievements and Trophies to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions when the DLC rolls out in both North America and Europe on February 5.

Both Amazon and GameStop list the PC bundle for $40, though no official pricing for the DLC nor "Ultimate Box" edition have yet been announced.
Early risers were treated to an accident on Rockstar's virtual 405. According to multiple sources, someone left Midnight Club: LA's upcoming South Central DLC in neutral earlier today and it inadvertently rolled out to the Xbox Live Marketplace a bit ahead of schedule. The content has since been removed, though UGO Gamesblog reports via NeoGAF that those who downloaded the content found nothing changed, save for a partial listing of cars queued up for the DLC's eventual release. Among those sweet rides are the '09 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, '08 Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X and '64 Chevy Impala.

Microsoft Europe's Xbox community manager Graeme Boyd acknowledged the snafu, writing in a statement that those who managed to snag the content should delete it as it was still being tested and "may not work properly," possibly causing problems with game saves. For now it seems eager racers will just have to wait for the content's official release sometime in early 2009 ... just sometime later than right now.

Source - Rockstar Fakeout: Midnight Club DLC Arrives, Is Pulled
Source - Midnight Club LA DLC warning
Midnight Club: LA DLC released early by accident originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 13:54:00 EST. From the "Did you know?" department comes an interesting tidbit regarding Sony's internal development studios -- specifically, the two behind last year's Wipeout HD (Liverpool Studio) and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (Evolution Studios). According to veep of Worldwide Studios Europe, Michael Denny, it is Sony's intention to fully merge the teams, which already share a management structure and resources, in a single geographic location.

"Each studio has its own internal concepting group which will always be looking at new opportunities and new IPs," Denny told GI.biz, "and we'll continue to extend and innovate within our existing franchises as well." The move won't happen "overnight," but the synergy that would result is sure to be beneficial to off- and hovering-slightly-above-road racing fans. We only hope that the two studios don't fall into the same trap Team Joystiq does whenever united under one roof: hours upon hours wasted looking at funny cat videos.
Evolution and Sony Liverpool studios merging, combining resources originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 14:20:00 EST. This has been making the rounds for a couple of weeks now, but in case you missed it over the holidays, Kaarbo Design owner Noah Kaarbo allegedly let slip (and then promptly removed, but not before Google cached it) some of the sample work his company had done for Forza developer Turn 10 Studios and -- cue the fake surprise -- Forza 3.

Community site Forzacentral managed to grab all four posters, which are said to be samples of what could have appeared on the race selection screen. Of course, this doesn't confirm the existence of another Forza game per se, but should Microsoft Games Studios decide to maybe revisit the successful racing franchise, it looks like it already has a logo to use.
Nintendo commanded the top spot in every video game category of Amazon.com's "Best of 2008" list released today. The winners in each category were determined by Amazon sales figures and shoppers using various site features. The main "best of" list covers various departments, but we're obviously only interested in the gaming section.

Video Games category:

Best-selling Product -- Nintendo Wii

Most-Loved Product -- Wii Fit

Most-Wished-For Product -- Wii Fit

Most Popular Gift Product -- Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel

Now, if only there was a way to track the "most-used" products. We wonder if the world has been keeping up with its Wii Fit regimen once the most-wished-for item actually landed in the house.
Nintendo dominates Amazon's 2008 game sales, wish lists originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 13:45:00 EST. What it lacks in a Flux Capacitor and time circuits, Burnout Paradise's hover-enabled "Jansen 88 Special" more than makes up for in its ability to make us drool, as evidenced in new footage released by Criterion Games. View it after the break!

The car, which certainly meets with Doc Brown's seal of approval, is one quarter of the upcoming Legendary Cars Pack, which will also include the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and GT Nighthawk. The latest episode of Electric Playground brought with it a shocking (yet somewhat believable) report -- they claimed to have learned from an unspecified source that Electronic Arts is canceling the development of new titles in the Need for Speed series. When they asked for a comment from EA, a spokesperson responded with a statement that neither confirmed nor denied the report.

We tend to handle rumors without named sources with a bit more trepidation than others, but the cancellation of EA's 14-year-old racing franchise isn't completely outside the realm of possibilities. After all, the gaming industry juggernaut has sailed through fairer economic waters, and the latest installment in the supposedly canceled series, Need for Speed: Undercover, currently holds a Metacritic rating of 65 -- which also happens to be the exact number of people who purchased the game. We'll let you know when we hear more.

Update: We've received a tip from someone a purported EA employ who wishes to remain anonymous. According to this source, the Need for Speed series isn't shutting down -- but EA Black Box, the development team behind recent entries into the series, "most likely" is. The source explains that EA not only scrapped their plans to open up a new studio in Vancouver, but that they also decided to close Black Box, moving the NFS and Skate teams to their much larger Burnaby studios.

The source further details the fate of Need for Speed -- he claims that one of the next entries into the series will be developed by the EA-owned Criterion Games, and will likely use the engine of their racing series, Burnout. He also claims that there are three different teams within Black Box that are responsible for developing Need for Speed titles (which is how they're able to release a new NFS title every year) -- though these three teams will likely consolidate into one, leading to less NFS releases, more continuity between said releases, and, ultimately, drastic downsizing for the NFS teams.
Rumor: Need for Speed series has been canceled -- or has it? Rockstar construction crews are hard at work laying down pavement for those already bored with Midnight Club's LA streets. The developer confirmed that it will release a "South Central Upgrade Map" for free next year, adding numerous LA landmarks and a new area equivalent to about a third of what's already on the disc.

Those looking to burn a little of their leftover holiday cash can also pick up the "South Central Content Pack," which will trick out the racing game with new character competitions, races, music and that all-important element of the LA landscape: The SUV. No release date for either download has been announced, though Rockstar notes that Xbox 360 and PS3 racers can look forward to rolling down the 105 Freeway sometime in early 2009.
Midnight Club: LA races into South Central in early '09 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 18:00:00 EST.
Who knew a racing game would sell? Sony did; that's why it made MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, which, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, has sold one million copies worldwide since it, well, stormed onto shelves in the US on October 28 and subsequently jumped across the pond on November 7.

The PS3 launch game's sequel has hit some bumps on UK sales charts, debuting in 29th place and slipping to 35th for the second week of November. Still, GI.biz says that developer Evolution Studios remains undeterred in its plans to introduce downloadable content for the game, in the form of new courses and cars/motorcycles/trucks/ATVs/scooters. (Okay, we made that last one up. Just keeping you sharp.)

Awwe, will you look at that? Little Kasey Kahne went and got himself a booboo. Electronic Arts announced that when it brings its long-held NASCAR license to the Wii early next year, it will be shorter, cuter and full of "cartoon mischief." Billed as a family-friendly take on motorsports, the Wii-exclusive NASCAR Kart Racing ("NASKART!") will feature a roster of 14 licensed NASCAR drivers (listed after the break) and 10 others that EA dreamed up, each with different capabilities to help them and a teammate reach the checkered flag first.

Up to four racers will be able to compete head-to-head, though players will have to be satisfied with sharing the screen. Wacky races will be spread out across 24 different tracks, from real world courses to junkyards and freeways. NASCAR Kart Racing will pull up to the retail starting line on February 10th, in time for the Daytona 500 and the official start of the 2009 NASCAR season. Until then ... gentlemen, start your engines! No, wait, it's that cord on the back there. Yea, just give it a good tug. There, you got it.

Gallery: NASCAR Kart Racing

Continue reading EA makes NASCAR-T cute for Wii in February

EA makes NASCAR-T cute for Wii in February originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:55:00 EST. At a summit held by Massive for in-game advertising, Activision confirmed that Bizarre Creations is working on a new third-person Bond title for release in 2009. According to the Twitter feed of Newsweek's N'Gai Croal (trust us, he's legit), the game is being touted as "racing and driving focused." The executive also mentioned Bizarre's new racing IP, describing it as "Mario Kart meets Forza." It's not much (in fact, it's somewhat paradoxical), but it does hint at a departure from Project Gotham Racing's realism -- relative to Mario Kart!

The executive also reportedly said the next Call of Duty Modern Warfare is due out Fall 2009. We're uncertain if that's confirmation of the next COD's setting or just a glib way of saying "Infinity Ward's COD series." We're reaching out to Activision for clarification on all these statements.
Bizarre making Bond title for '09, new racing IP is 'Mario Kart meets Forza' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 16:44:00 EST. Infogrames President Phil Harrison announced today at a publisher event that the company plans to revisit Baldur's Gate, Dungeons & Dragons, Neverwinter Nights and Test Drive Unlimited -- but not until after 2009 (via Eurogamer). Three of those franchises have had recent releases (NWN2: Storm of the Zehir last month, TDU and D&D Tactics in February 2007).

As for Baldur's Gate, a follow-up to BG2: Throne of Bhaal has been rumored since 2001 from now-defunct Black Isle Studios. It was reportedly mentioned again by a PC Gamer UK editor as recently as January 2008.
Atari reveals plans to revisit Baldur's Gate, others originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. Despite what series creator Kazunori Yamauchi had to say to us on the topic during E3, Spanish newspaper El Financiero quotes SCEE executive James Armstrong as stating that Gran Turismo 5 (the full, real deal - not Prologue 2 or some-such) will be released in Europe "by Christmas 2009." This is, of course, concerning a series that's been historically fast and <strike>furious</strike> loose with release dates.

GTPlanet - which is part of the chain of custody on this rumor - speculates that, if true, we could see a summer 2009 release for GT5 in Japan and a late 2009 / early 2010 launch in the West. This scenario would certainly follow the staggered roll-outs of previous Gran Turismo titles to a (Model) T.

[Via Evil Avatar]
Rumor: Gran Turismo 5 on track for holiday '09 release in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 15:30:00 EST. Criterion has announced that its upcoming Burnout Paradise downloadable content Big Surf Island, contrary to previous statements in the developer's podcast, will no longer be offered gratis. Said the developer, "Big Surf is the culmination of everything we learned creating Paradise City, and we want it to bring you a truly spectacular new experience - the highlight of a year of incredible premium content."

Surf Island will focus heavily on stunts -- in Criterion's words, the mantra is, "If you can see it, you can drive it." What we don't know at the moment is how much it will cost, or when it will be made available. The car shown in the images, the Dust Storm, will also be available the same time as Surf Island, although there is no indication if it will be free or premium DLC. If you haven't jumped on the Burnout Paradise bandwagon (and subsequently rammed it into a busy intersection, sending the bandwagon flying into a nearby construction site), the Ultimate Box edition is coming in February 2009.
